In making this topic... I hope we win the conference tourney and make the NCAA tourney, but if not, what do you guys think of us making the NIT or even having 2 big south teams make the NIT? I think either us, Radford, or VMI will win the conference tourney, but between those 2 other teams that don't win, do they have a change for NIT? Just wanted to get some discussion going on this.

It would still be a remote possibility if we didn't win the tourney. Again, the NIT is more of a popularity contest than anything. If they had a choice between say a 23-win Flames squad and a 13-win ACC school they would take the latter in a heartbeat. The NCAA gets a big cut of the gate.

Normally I would think it wouldn't really matter if we were selected since no one cares about the games themselves. But the extra week or so of practice would be nice with all of our young players for Ritchie to try some things in anticipation of next season when we will have a different look to our roster (without Anthony but with quite a bit more size).

Let's not forget abut the CBI and there's a 4th tournament out there this year as well. We could get a chance to play in one of those. Of course none of us want to since we'd rather play in the big dance, but an extra week or two of practice would be huge.

With the CBI it is certain that Liberty and VMI will be playing post season hoops. NIT is a possibility because both teams can draw a ton of folks. However neither venue is as big as the example that Sly gave about the major team with 15 wins or whatever. NCAA is what I really want to see for us though.

I'm not sure about that, We (Lu and Radford) both played UVA, GM, W&M. LU won all those games Radford didn't win 1. We hung with Clemson, Radford got blown out by Wake and West Virginia. VMI really didn't have a strong non-conference schedule but that win at Kentucky should stick out, I would think.

I think Radford would have the worst case as far as making a post season tourney, they won our conference but, only had 3 non conference wins against weak opponents. Where I think LU an VMI has shown they can play with the big boys and even upset them.

I would prefer the NCAA for sure but if that doesn't happen I would like us to get into one of the tourney's, not only is it good practice for our Freshman, I'm sure it would be nice for Smitty to get to be part of something outside the Big South tourney.

but if Radford doesn't win the Big South Tourny they get an auto bid to the NIT since they won the regular season big south title...that is how it works now

I get it... bitter about the football thing. Haven't heard that before.

If I'm not mistaken UVA lost a ton of money on the CBI tournament last year. They had to outlay a pretty big amount of money to host each game they played in the tournament. If the rules have not changed I'm not sure we would be willing to dole out the money to participate in a 3rd rate tourney. I hope this is not the option anyway (hoping for the field of 64). As far as the NIT I seriously doubt anyone gets in unless Radford loses in the tourney (since they would be guaranteed). The NIT is pretty difficult to make now and our RPI being so low does not help our case either.

I think that NIT deal is a great one for the BS, and brings a measure of justice to the league. I understand the whole tournament mentality, and the excitement of it all, but if I were in charge of the world, I would send the league winner to the NCAA, and if a different team won the tourney, then I would send them to the NIT. Speaking of "fairness" only. I realize that if that procedure were implemented, there would be no real reason for a tournament. It has just always sounded rather idiotic that you play a whole league schedule, playing each team twice, and then have to beat them again to be named "Champ."

Because the people who do the selecting have issues

Why would we want to make one of the crappy tournaments? There's no chance we make the NIT but I wouldn't want to make anything but the NCAA or NIT. That's like being 6-6 and going to a bowl game.

Bowl games can be fun...

I also think (but am not positive) that the players might like it.

Can't poll the players right now, but maybe rhetorically after we win the BS.

Some of the same reasons why a 6-6 team would want to go to a bowl game: might get on TV again (although all bowls are on TV), more media attention, gives the team something to brag about if they win it, bring more revenue to the program (possibly, i dont know how the other two tournaments work), gives the kids more experience in a one-and-done tournament format which will help them prepare and better handle future possible ncaa/nit appearances, gives you a chance to take down some of the better mid major teams and some low tiered BCS conference teams (remember the UVA win folks?).

The main benefit from being in either of the minor post season tournaments is the additional practice time to set things up for the next year. Same with minor bowl games in football.
