Every team I've been watching this week has Nike SOD uniforms. I don't particularly like them but the kids these days do and it's a factor in recruiting. I thought Ritchie was bff with some important Nike dude. Where are our fancy uniforms? They're tight so that would solve the baggy shirt problem. They'd still have huge shorts though. I thought we were going to be on the cutting edge of Nike stuff.

The obsession with the "fashion aspect" of sports among certain members of this board both fascinates and repels me.

I read Uni Watch multiple times a week. I was taught at a young age by coaches that your appearance on the field/court says a lot about you.

You look good you feel good. You feel good you play good. You play good you win.

Middle school baseball coach made the entire team shine their cleats before every game.

Winning is most important, but to think that the uniforms and the way they look are meaningless is a little off-base. If that's the case, let us wear sweats and t-shirts to class.

I also had a coach that would make those of us who wore our bball shoes off the court wash them before the next game, he even bought us the sneaker cleaner and left it in the locker room! we were to look "clean, put together and fresh so the other team knew we were ready to play"

everyone hasnt switched over yet...still a VERY small percentage of teams are using the SOD...I'm sure we'll switch over soon enough...but I really like the Uni's we are wearing now.

My baseball coach has even taken the look clean philosophy to practice. We used to practice in sweats, t-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts occasionally, etc. He's now started to require the team to practice in grey baseball pants and some type of West Stokes baseball shirt tucked in. His reasoning is he never knows when someone is going to stop by practice, whether it's a college coach, school administrator, etc so he wants the team to look professional at all times.

jon, i see your point, but to say anyone who disagrees with you about uniforms is off base is just not right. if you want to buy into the look good, feel good, play good stuff, great, but there are some programs out there that would win regardless if they had on sweats or fancy uniforms. you do nto have to wear fancy uni's to be professional. indeed nice uniforms say a lot, but to say they will make you play better??? cmon man!!

Our uniforms are too big, baggy and sloppy. When there are players having to adjust the shoulders on their shirts b4 they shoot that is obiously a problem! While I am no fashion Nazi, I do think we could have done better in the uniform department. Or perhaps we are going to be on the Fashion Nightmares - Athletic Edition of Queer Eye for The Straight Guy!

That is FUNCTION, which is the OPPOSITE of FASHION. Those suits were designed to reduce friction. Looks were an afterthought. To the extent our baggy unis may get in the way of performance, I'm all for a change. Otherwise, I couldn't care less.

players and coaches have stated that they prefer the tighter fitting jerseys because it reduces the ability of the defensive player to grab and hold the jerseys, thus giving the offensive player a greater advantage over regular fitting uniforms.

and if this info from Nike in regards to Kentucky's SOD unis has any truth to it, then these jerseys and shorts due serve a function
Kentucky's new uniforms incorporate several Nike innovations that were first introduced for the USA Basketball Men's National Team that captured gold this past August in Beijing. The jerseys take advantage of Nike Aerographics, an engineered mesh providing zoned cooling that reduces up to half the yarn, making it more lightweight and breathable. Specific adjustments in the waistband, shoulder seam and other areas, along with Nike Dri-FIT technology, provide increased comfort and thermoregulation to enable players to perform at their optimal level on the court.

I do have an above average interest in uniform aesthetics, however that was not my point here. My point was, I thought we had the connections to get this type of stuff, when it seems like only the BCS conference teams have them, but they ALL seem to have them. Yes it is fashion, but if you don't think it's important to a program, you're crazy. I'd say 90% of people over 30 think Oregon's uniforms in bball and football are a sin against nature. However, it's been stated by coaches there, that the uniforms do attract kids because kids think they're cool. This kind of stuff does matter. A least a little bit.

very true. i knew a kid that played for a bad D2 school that had sweet unis and he once said "we may have lost, but at least we were the best looking team on the court."

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about here regarding uni's- if you don't like the look I get that, but having played at most every level of basketball- rarely do any (more less all) of your players get to try ANY uniform on before they are ordered- all companies send a couple of sizes & styles as samples but as soon as you start making changes to the style, etc then the sample is no longer really the same product as what will be received.. so while I understand that many of the players may have trouble with jerseys sliding off of the shoulders etc, it's a flawed process from start to finish- unfortunately many of you only see the result. If only there were uniform stores at every mall- then perhaps you could have your players fitted- but it's not going to happen.. the other side of the debate is that your players probably prefer the bigger, baggier style of basketball uni's anyway- trust me if they think they look good, they will perform better, because confidence is an amazing attribute..

I'm sure the players could careless as long as they are still getting 25 pairs of shoes a year

The flames were wearing somekind of grey & red uniforms yesterday. I think they are new, although I don't like them. But it doesn't matter if they keep winning in them.

ok, now I've seen the grays in person. They are awesome. Very similar to Syracuse's. I really like the blocks up the shorts. And they all fit everybody. There is a weird little L at the bottom of the shorts. Not sure where that came from. Doesn't really fit our branding guide.

The L is the only complaint I have about the Grey's...it looks kinda high schoolish but oh well...I think a Cross, Eagle or something else could have gone a lot better...or Liberty in Script or something

By the way, this whole thread was started by me complaining that we aren't up with the times because we didn't have SODs yet. Nobody mentioned that the Grays are SODs! A perfect opportunity to call me an idiot and nobody took it. Or is this yet another case of me saying something and then it becoming so? Are our other unis now SODs too, or just the grays?
