He'a gonna create match-up problems for the opposition, which will probally force most teams into a zone, which should play right into McKay's hands.

Also, as a 6-11 four, all he needs to do is get in position, and he'll easily grab 8 or 9 boards a game in our conference.

Why would a 3 point threat force a team into a zone? You tend to break a zone by hitting your 3 point shots.

I think what he is getting at is the fact that he is an inside out threat. He can use his inside presence to bring teams into a zone, and then slip out and hit from the perimeter, but with the other team in a zone to stop inside, that will also open up chances for other deep shooters like Tyler Baker

Trying to imagine McMasters and Baker at the 4 & the 3 shooting 3's next year.

But that was the question. We don't really know if he's got an inside game. He could be Pitsnoggle part 2. But hey, I would love that.

In response to McMasters being a threat against a man defense (and causing a team to go zone): I coach high school ball (I know, different level but still same principles) and last year we had a post who could bury the three and was an okay ball handler. When teams went man, I had my post out top against the other post. My guy popped a couple of three's, which made the other team tighten up on him. When he got the ball again, a little head fake was all it took to get past the defensive post and a clear shot at the hoop. The opposition went to a zone to keep from getting beat on that matchup.

In response to Pridemore and Tommy Mc, they were awesome. I worked with Temple's team for four years and they were good. Also, the other stud on the team was Anthony Eubanks (transfer from Ol Miss) who now works for FCA on the Clemson campus. Eubanks could throw down with the best of them. The 80's were great! ha.

And when Eubanks threw it down, it was usually a reverse 180 degrees SLAM that would even have made SCAR proud. Not bad for an NCCAA school in those days (National Christian College Athletic Association).

Unless a team has a tall defender that can adequately defend McMasters on the outside, then they're gonna have to play some kind of zone in order to defend him. This will cause some problems, especially for our Big South opponents.

He may not post up that often, but with his size and skills, he should get his fair share of inside scoring and rebounding--especially against man defenses that are small at the four.

paradox better explained the point I was trying to make. teh kid is 6'11" He can get his points on the inside, BUT, when they try to close down the inside by going to a zone, either he can slip out and pop a jumper from the perimeter, or he will open it up for somebody like Tyler Baker to get plenty of looks (and anybody that saw him last year knows he is just about money in the bank when you give him an opening, even for a second)

isn't it a bit premature to be heralding this guy as the great white hope?

We're not saying he is going to lead LU to the promised land (i.e. a Big South Championship), we are simply stating that based on what we know that there are things that he could do for the team.

No, consider this kid the Liberty version of Duke's Kyle Singler.......

He will do very well for our team......alot better than that kid Joe Crawford at Kentucky

Finished tied for ninth in the SEC with 15.4 points in league play ...
Averaged 18.0 points in SEC Tournament ... Fifth in the league
from beyond the arc in SEC action, connecting on 34-of-85 (.400)
... Second on the team in scoring with 14.0 ppg ... Had six 20-
point games ... Scored a game-high 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting
at Tennessee

From the UK media guide, have to say that's probably better than what McMasters would be able to do against similar competition.

Dickens, the parallel I was thinking of was that McMasters has the potential to be for the men's team what Katie Feenstra was for the women's team a few years ago. Both players were recruited by major basketball powerhouses, and both will likely play for pay--either now or in a few years. Scar and I both saw his dad play in college, and if his son has the same game, attitude, work ethic, and shooting touch as his dad, plus about 6 more inches in height, Carter should be quite the force in an LU uniform for years to come.

Joe Crawford went to Kentucky as the #3 rated shooting guard in the country..
GP MIN FG% 3ptFG% FT% REB PPG
2004-05 Kentucky (28-6) 31 11.2 36.1 26.5 57.7 1.8 3.2
2005-06 Kentucky (22-13) 32 23.8 41.1 36.2 71.8 3.9 10.2
2006-07 Kentucky (22-12) 34 32.3 44.4 35.0 63.7 4.0 14.0
2007-08 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Career 97 22.8 3.3 7.9 40.7 1.3 3.7 32.7 1.3 2.0 64.5 1.2 2.1 3.3 1.3 1.2 0.4 0.2 1.6 9.3

umm....I think McMasters can match and surpass Crawford's lackluster performance

And you think McMasters could put up 14 points a game against the SEC on a regular basis? The kid is good but let's be realistic here...

Sorry to intrude in this little dispute, but I would say there is a good chance McMasters could put up 3.2 PPG as a freshman in the SEC, which is what Crawford did. Whether he would develop into a player who could score 14 ppg in that league as a junior would be hard to predict. The deal with Crawford is that he was projected to be an impact player from the get-go and he was not. His stats do show that he has clearly improved.

My only comment on this kid is that with his size and his shooting ability could really cause problems. As a 6'11" player, he can get his points inside, but when a team starts going into a zone to stop the inside threat, he can slip out and his shots from the perimeter. Of course he is the kidn of player that can also create looks for other shooters like Tyler Baker, Justin Holland, even Anthony Smith and Kyle Ohman.

interesting. i never knew kentucky was interested in this kid - i wonder if that was Tubby Smith interest or Billy Gillespie interest. i dont understand why this kid would only be rated a three star. i mean isn't a good shooting big man a coach's dream these days (unless the coach wants traditional posts)? does anyone what is it that makes him not getting a 4 or 5 star rating?

i'm just glad he didn't go to that asylum known as USC where the thugs run the show.

because that is the way recruting works.....if you are really good, as maybe a potential pro, you get that 4 or 5 star ranking.....

3 stars though are the players who can turn into superstars
Gilbert Arenas
Adam Morrison
Morris Peterson

all 3 stars

kentuckywildcats--The interest in McMasters came from Tubby before he flew to the Mall of America. Tubby watched at least one game between McMasters and Phil Jurick (who has since committed to UT).
