Obviously the win or loss does not matter to what the goal is: win the conference tournament. But I want them to always win. And if they don't, I don't want them to look like crap.

We ran into a buzz saw. As bad as the final score looks though, I felt we competed well for the majority of the game. Almost their entire margin was built in the last 10 minutes of the first half. Whatever lesson it was Layer needed to teach Evan by sitting him most of the first half, I sure hope it got through because clearly we need him on the floor against this calibre of opponent.

I don't think the result means anything. I think the effort and attitudes tonight meant a lot. Evan really bugged me. I hope it's just a one night thing and he was having a bad night but I really didn't like the fact that he mouthed off to Layer.

And we don't need our best player mouthing off to the coach and then going through the motions the rest of the game after being benched.

Am I mistaken or did Seth Curry "go through the motions" those last handful of games before transferring?

Tough opponent...hard loss...no harm in BSC.

Seriously though Old Flame must have thought that Jerry Quarry was competitive against Ali and Frazier. This was a KO in round three.

Apparently, if you were watching "hokies", you weren't paying attention, or you would have noticed that we led 21-20 with a little over 10 minutes to go in the half. They then outscored us 28-5. The game was pretty much over at that point. Yes they stretched it out a bit more in the second half, but we competed pretty well. It was during those 10 minutes that GMU built almost their entire winning margin, which is exactly what I said in my earlier post.

Got to agree with Olldflame on this one. We held our own in the second half, only being outscored by 8 points, but the first half was ugly, getting out scored by 22, mostly with the 3-ball.

Score by Periods 1st 2nd Total
George Mason 48 36 84

I agree with Oldflame also. During that late in the first half stretch GMU couldn't miss but I thought that our soft defense contributed to them making all of those open 3's and easy layups. At times it looked almost too easy. Not a good showing at all especially due to the fact that it was a home game.

It will be important to see how we compete next week. I want to see what kind of attitude this team takes. Last night we ran into a hot shooting team and we were obviously not mentally focused especially on defense. That is on the coaching staff imo. It is their job to get us ready to play and as a team defensively we were not ready. The thing with Evan: He is a part of a TEAM so if he mouthed off to the coach then I don't mind him sitting until he gets perspective. I expect him to come out next week with something to prove and that will bode well for us. If he goes in the tank then he is less mature than I expect from a player representing my school. Sit him the rest of the year for all I care. LU is more than one player.

Are we really taking comfort in "hanging" with a mid-major team in the second half of a blowout? THIS IS PRESBY TALK!

Old Flame would find some positives in a Hiroshima-type performance. GMU is a good mid major but it is an opponent we should at least be able to stay on the floor against at home. When a team gets the easy looks that GMU got it is should be a concern instead on a compliment.

I'm as disappointed as the next guy about the end result. You can call GMU a mid-major I guess, but then you can call Butler and Gonzaga mid-majors too. Regardless of labels, right now all of them are where we aspire to be.

I was just pointing out that the game was not the total mismatch the score seems to indicate. We played them tough for 30 out of 40 minutes, and their entire big run was made with our best player (who is also our best perimiter defender) sitting on the bench (apparently for disciplinary reasons) and Freshmen playing major minutes as a result.

Over the last 36 years I have seen our guys take a whuppin or 2 (and that certainly included some between 02 and 07). After some of them I felt like we could have played that team 10 times, and the outcome would have been the same every time. I don't feel that way about this one.

If we have a repeat performence next week I will besomewhat concerned. I don't expect it.

it was pretty bad..we competed for the first 11 minutes...then they blew us out. Then it didn't matter anymore so they just held serve. They beat us up pretty badly like i would have guessed before the season started, bigger, faster, stronger, and more athletic.

I don't disagree that they had an edge in all of those areas, but not a 30 point edge. The big margin was a result of their edge in experience and a hot shooting night. We had way too many turnovers and defensive breakdowns during that stretch in the first half, and they took advantage of pretty much every one of them.

tough loss. we just di not play any defense and evan's attitude was awful to coach layer last night. evan need to learn his lessson and im glad layer sat him. burrus was a no show as well. the big story for me was our lack of defense. mason had way too many open looks. hopefully we will rebound against W&M next saturday. on a non game related note...one concession stand open, super long lines and heard two locals in line who had made their first visit to vines say they wont come back because of the game experience. i cant blame them when you bring your kids to the game and are standing in line for 20 minutes. i would get frustrated too. if anyone in athletics is reading this dont use the excuse it's sodexho....get in the face of their management team and get it addressed. we need to keep any local that comes to watch a game.

I was there 30 minutes before tip and noticed the same exact thing. It's a saturday night game! If you're not gonna open more than 1 stand last night, you're never gonna open more than 1.

Attendance at last night's game: 2747. Not bad, but we were still less than half full, against Mason.

Smoothy, I actually saw--and visited--2 open concession stands last night: one behind the Baptist side and one over by the Hall of Fame wall. I had to go to both because the Baptist side one didn't have any Chick-Fil-A sandwiches, so I had to carry my pretzel and drink I just bought over to the other concession stand for my sandwich.

Does that mean there were NO concession stands open behind the students' side?

I don't recall them ever having concessions open on the student side. In the past it was usually near the main entrances and on the opposite side where the hall of fame is now.

I blame Scar.

Right before George Mason went on their ridiculous run, he made the comment something like "George Mason can blow people out." And then they did.

It looked like to me that they went on that first half run when JC Sanders started trying to make Larry Blair shots. Not just him I guess - there were quite a few that we just went down and shot it with horrible looks. Then to make it worse we didn't go back and play defense.

And Scar, I love your broadcasting, but you don't have to tell us the Sanders' are from Sugarland Texas every three minutes.
