I mean this with no disrespect to the guys that are leaving us, but I've got to think that the two junior college guys we are getting will contribute more than the two rising-juniors that are leaving. It's great to see that we're getting better and better in the talent that we're bringing in.

Now our Roster looks something like this

1 & 2 Guards
Sanders 6'3" JR
JC Sanders 6' FR
Gordon 6'2" SO
Anderson 6'4" JR

3
Johnson 6'5" JR
Brown 6'5" JR
Minaya? 6'6" JR

4
Burrus 6'6" SO
Baird 6'8" FR
Sommy 6'7" FR

5
JVP 6'10" FR
Carter 6'11" SO

It certainly looks a lot stronger on paper than in the recent past.

wow I am thoroughly impressed with that roster. I also think it's really good because now in every position there is going to be a battle with who is going start and get some pt. I have a feeling alot of guys are going to be stepping it up coming into next season. I am so pumped I cant wait.

 The 5 on 5 "pick up" games on campus this summer should be quite competitive and fun to watch.

Minutes are going to be interesting with our 3's. Redshirting just got more interesting as well.

If Weaver leaves we still have a scholarship. I hope he stays. He is a big plus off the court and a really good athlete who can give a spark occasionally with his defense if nothing else. If he leaves that schollie could be available for Tyler in the event he gets his 6th year, and if not I personally would like it to be offered to Spencer.

Especially if we move Anderson down to the 3 hole.

I doubt you're going to see much of JA this season. He's a liability on defense and his shooting percentage went way down last year.

He averaged 22mpg this season, I'd expect that to at least be cut in half.

It will be interesting to see how the minutes are split up at the 1 and 2. Jesse should see 30+. Then you have Evan, JC, and JA to split 50 minutes between. I would think by conference play JC would be worthy of at least 20, and Evan is already worthy of that much if not close to 30. It also gives us flexibility at the 3 where if one of these JUCOs don't cut it we can go small or even slide JA, Sommy, or Baird over.

Jesse fouls too much. That's where you'll see the extra minutes come from.

Roster is looking really good. Glad to see some JC transfers - those will help give us a little more experience. Things that surprised me -

1) JC is only 6'? Is anyone else concerned that his game won't translate to this level?

2) I agree with the JA comments. He shouldn't see much PT. He just looks lost to me out there and his game is to one-dimensional.

3) Is JVP good? Has anyone seen him practice? I'm just thinking that if he was really that good - Layer would have played him last year... I hate the redshirt - especially when we can't seem to keep a guy 4 years anyways - just wasting a year.

4) Please let this program settle. Barber needs to stay patient, keep expectations in check and let this team grow together. Dunton gets a lot of flack on this board - but his teams stayed together... We need that again. I think Layer can do this - just saying. (Just because I mentioned Dunton doesn't mean I don't like layer - I think he is a good hard working coach)

5) Here is a curve ball. I wouldn't mind experimenting with Carter at 3? I don't think he will ever be a true post player and what type of match up issues will that create for other teams. He has a decent shot and can handle the ball. (There I said something nice about Carter! - To even it out - he needs to stop it with the hair - it looks ridiculous, just get a buzz already and let your game do the talking)

1) I would be concerned if his last name wasn't Sanders. I just have a feeling that he'll make it work simply because of the family pedigree. Call it a gut feeling.

2) Yeah I got nothing.

3) We did weekly interviews during the season with Layer and a player. These interviews always ran late so I would see 30-45 minutes of practice. Joel looked very good. I don't expect all-conference type production as a freshman but I think he can start for us and be a very solid player. The reason for the redshirt was because they didn't want to have him and Carter graduating in the same year.

4) I agree.

5) I've got to think we see Carter play more of a 3/4 on offense. He's 6'11 but I don't think he'll ever be a true post player. He's got to learn the post game to compliment his shooting, but he's got the best 3-point shot on the team. He obviously can't play the three on offense but he showed against Radford this year that he can play with the 5 on defense and bang with guys as big as him.

No. There was movement. Normal movement, but he was able to keep most players here. I don't remember having to re-learn all the players every year.

He had transfers come in for two years because that's all the eligibility they had left or players not be academically eligible, but the core always seemed to be there.

Also - I would love to see Baker play again, play a whole year healthy. I really think he could be a special player if he could stay on the floor...

-- Kentucky's John Calipari isn't the only college coach who's showing interest in West Jessamine star Jarrod Polson [as a walk on]. Colts Coach Damon Kelley said he's recently been contacted by Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, Nichols State, Montana State, and Liberty about Polson.
Polson is visting Coach Layer in Lynchburg this morning. Layer just grabbed some fruit and is sipping on a coffee.

If he could stay on the floor.... I think we have seen that Baker is one of those who's body just can't talk the pounding. Was it 07-08 the last time he played a full year more or less (even then was off the bench)? I think that ship has sailed.

I used to say the same thing about switching Russ to the 4. It suited his game. But when you're the tallest guy on the court for some reason you have to play in the post.

I don't know much about JVP's skill set but he's supposed to be a really high motor guy. Like just kind of relentless. Even if he lacks skill, that alone can get you pretty far in this league. I expect a lot of rebounds and clean up garbage baskets.

Actually, the year Tyler stayed healthy was 06-07, when he was a redshirt freshman. He had one of his best games off the bench in the first round tourney loss to VMI.

The question now becomes should we look for another signee or do we keep that last scholarship for next year? I am really happy with our class so far so would be happy either way.

If we're going after a big man, in the mold of a JVP (a guy we can sit a year and let him get some work in practice/weight room), I'd say use it. However, no reason to add another guard to this years class.
