This has been bugging me since this was announced, So here's the hot button question of the day!

Is it possible that one of the reasons coach Rocco let Summers play hoops was that he is beginning to think he isn't a top notch receiver?

I'm ducking now!

Even if Rocco felt that way, he knows that McKay doesn't have a scholarship to offer Chris. I have to imagine that our football coaches were disappointed with his lack of productivity this year, but believe the potential is still there. It may sound like I'm harping on this, but I think they are hoping that actual athletic competition on the basketball court and in practice will help his game more than just doing lifting and conditioning in the off season.

That's a lot of assumptions in there.

Not assuming anything, just speculating. I think it's a far bigger stretch to think they are letting him play basketball because they have given up on him as a receiver. I'll believe that when I read that his scholarship has not been renewed.

I meant that you're making some rather large assumptions as to how the football coaches feel about the kid and his season. He's a redshirt freshman who was stuck playing behind two seniors and Mike Brown. As for "just doing lifting", it cannot be overestimated how important the off-season workout is in football.

You think they were happy the way he played? I think it's a fair assumption to say he didnt live up to the accolades in his first year

Wanna know my speculation? I wouldnt be surprised to see him be a basketball only player before his time here is done. That's MY speculation

I think he will stay a football player. He had a rough season, but he was also playing behind Bolden, J5, and Mike Brown, and throw in BJ Hayes as well. We know he has potential. And I think playing Basketball might help his athleticism and his hands.

yeah, but passion is passion...and if his first love is something that he can have a future in as well then I think a 'change' could happen

I just find rocco letting him play interesting. that's all.

how about a rephraise and say his performance or seeming lack thereof may make him more dispensible than other's (starters).

Wow, the same people who were building him up as wide receiver Jesus are now calling him a bust after one season and yet somehow I'm not surprised.

I never said that. I clearly stated I was speculating about Roccos reasons.

I didn't mean you specifically. I was speaking in terms of this message board.

No kidding. The kid spent one year in a redshirt and one year behind three outstanding players and you guys are ready to write him off. I wonder what you people were saying two years ago about Bolden or two years before that about Wynton Jackson.

I don't disagree with anything you said RTF, and the only negative thing I said was about his lack of productivity this year. I think he has the talent to be really good. It's true that the focus of our passing attack all year was to get the ball to Bolton and Crawford, but we use a LOT of 3 and 4 receiver sets, and Chris actually was on the field quite a bit. Either he wasn't getting open, or Brock didn't have confidence to throw it to him, because the ball didn't go his way much, and when it did, the results weren't pretty. 2 catches for 14 yards (all year), a couple of bad drops and some fade patterns where he didn't seem to compete for the ball particularly well against smaller defenders. That's one reason I think playing hoops will help him. Every time a shot goes up he will have an opportunity to fight for position and compete for the rebound. Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez both played D1 basketball, and both say they are much better football players as a result.

Personally, I hope he continues to play both sports. I don't see a basketball scholarship being available for him in the next couple of years, so unless he wants to pay his own way he'll be a football player first and foremost.

Not really. If you average it out over the year, he was on the field in the offense for maybe, maybe five plays a game.

Summers barely saw the field at all in meaningful action. In three-wide sets, we were going with predominantly Bolden, Crawford and Brown and in four-wide we usually added either Zach Terrell or BJ Hayes. The only real action Summers saw was at the end of blowouts with the second team when we weren't throwing the ball anyway. The whole "no confidence" thing doesn't hold up since Brock and the coaches proved over and over again that they weren't afraid to throw to anybody when they kept going to Rasberry who was good for at least one wide open drop a game. Coaches don't put guys in the game if they don't believe they can do the job.

I'm not saying the guy's going to be an All-American or even an all-conference player but to start bagging on this kid -- or any kid for that matter -- after one early season is just stupid.

Back to basketball. Chris was a DNPCD tonight against Depaul. With Tyler back (for now anyway) I don't see him getting a lot of minutes in the near future.

Yeah, I forgot about that one. Probably not much PT on this road trip though.

Not sure if that was directed to me or not but I'll respond....I never said he was a bust...in fact I called him a program changer...my only concern is where his passion lies...because all in due time a choice will need to be made

I do feel like the coach's were expecting more...but thats by no means a bust, just simply didnt have that impact year they were expecting.

Like I said, not sure if you were directing that to me or not b/c your post was very vague

EDIT: I also just read RTF's post...if he starts to believe he wont be a All American or even All Conference then I think we'd see that choice for him being easier.
