Mark Cline was interested in Liberty before the job was open the 1st time. I had conversations with folks that know him well back when RD was still coaching that he was looking at Liberty hard. He was at VCU at the time. His brother Todd was my teammate back in the day as OldFlame has mentioned. Also like HMO I am just a fan with no real pull or influence. I was told today that some folks felt like I should have endorsed one LU guy rather than list a few that I thought would make a good coach. I am not in the endorsing business. this is not a presidential race :P . I have no say in these matters believe me. I am just a former player/coach that happens to be a part time media member and a loyal supporter of Liberty. If I had any influence JB would be calling me. He certainly knows how to get a hold of me. Like Rooster I am anxious to see who the next coach will be.

Haven't talked to my contacts lately that know Cline. I am sure he would love to come to Lynchburg though.

hopefully it helps us too that Griffin is leaving and Capel tried to get every open job and may leave sooner rather than later.

If we offer, Cline is coming. It's a matter of if we offer.
HMO......................

I think that the success of these coaches has alot to do with what sport they are coaching. Dont get me wrong, they are both great guys and good coaches.

However, to recruit Mcdougal to come to Liberty, do you know what Tolsma had to do..... NOTHING. Josh wanted to come. The same thing with alot of the track people. Its the nature of the beast.

Also It is alot easier to recruit women to come to Liberty to play basketball........ 1.) girls dont tend to have the same problem with the rules (this is a stretch)
2.) (much more valid point) Women in general are not looking at basketball as a career after basketball, Men are. This changes the recruiting battle a ton.

Each Sport at Liberty different in terms of talent that we can attract. I think the mens Basketball job is the hardest at the school.

With that being said, I would love to hire a "lifer", but in mens basketball, I could settle with a young guy that wants to build his resume.
I would think that McDougal wanted to come because LU is the only Christian program that gets national recognition. The track program has done exactly what McKay said we should be able to do. I liked McKay because he had said that LU's culture shouldn't be looked at as a hindrance to recruiting; there are a good number of solid Christian athletes who would be glad to play at a Christian school that competes at a high level. I took that to mean that we could compete with top level schools when competing for this demographic. If we can find a coach with the same outlook, I think that we will see our program develop in a way that would make us proud. If we settle for an up and coming name that doesn't align with LU's values, we're probably destined for for more of what we saw 4-5 years ago. Who would've thought that a home school league had talent like the Sanders brothers- and I'd bet there are a lot more like that out there.

Who recruited and developed this guy named Blake Griffin.

He was the first hire by one of the best up and coming coaches in America.

That's a pretty good resume.
Blake was technically Kelvin Sampson's recruit. He signed Taylor with the knowledge that Blake was on his way to OU.
Also I believe Mark was with Capel at VCU too.

Don't get too excited because someone wants to be here. We all saw how that turned out before.

And yes, Cline was with Capel at VCU, and left with him when Capel got the job at OU. He was also the top assistant under Capel's dad at ODU. He's a certainly a good friend of the Capel family.

Here is Lang's article in the local fishwrap today. Unfortunately, there isn't really anything we don't already know, except some brief bios of each of LU's version of the Fab Five (of coaching prospects). There is one quote about the hiring time table from JB, and I really like the mystery of the "anonymous" coaching prospects comment:
Barber said in a text message that the search was “still moving quickly” and that it should be wrapped up in the “next several days or so.” Asked if the announcement could be made as early as today, Barber responded: “Not sure as of yet.”

Barber added that he had spoken to other candidates who wish to remain anonymous.

Had Rob Moxley been mentioned in this thread before? I just saw his name in Lang's article and I haven't read most of this thread. He was doing the recruiting at Maryland for a couple years, as Gary Williams famously doesn't do much recruiting himself. UMD has really had a lack of talent on their team for a few years so I don't know what to make of that.

He was included in that other thread with the poll so I guess he had been brought up.

Is this like a scare tactic attempt to shape opinion on FF? Because I don't think it matters.
I believe this quote can be related back to the earlier discussions involving "Spaz" and the "ignore button". Just saying...

If the current players leave because we don't hire who they want then bye. If they wanna throw a hissy fit because they didn't get their way then we don't need them. I'll take a bad year to get players here who want to be here. If they leave because they don't get their way then they weren't playing for Liberty in the first place. If they made their mind up before potentially meeting a new head coach then sure, have fun wherever you go.

Pretty much every senior on the football team this year that made all-conference was ready to transfer after their freshman year. Then they met the new coach and decided to stay.

Anyone saying these guys are definitely gone if they don't get their way is worrying way too much about this.

Agree, however if you have two coach's that you are having a tough time choosing between then IMO the edge goes with that who could seal up the recruits. If we lose all the recruits it will set us back a year...maybe two

I don't think Rob Moxley had anything to do with Maryland's talent problems. The "lack of talent" at Maryland has to do with the administration and the school's academic board wanting student-athletes. IMO, this excludes the "one-and-done" type of players from Maryland. Plus IMO, I think Gary Williams prefers to coach 4 year players anyways because he doesn't want to the superstar players who care more about the NBA than staying in school. Gary's thing now is "just give me some kids who want to be here." The problem is that some of the those kids don't meet Maryland's requirements....(also Gary's personality and temperment is not for everyone). lol.

No it wouldn't. Chances are they have their own recruits. When McKay came, he brought Jeremy Anderson. Whoever the head coach is has his own recruits that he's recruiting at his school. The verbals (note: verbal, they haven't even signed with us yet) we have right now might not even fit the system of the new coach.
