Okay............ not pay us " lots" of money.

But I think that if we agree to pay a guy for a certain ammount of time, we could make him agree to stay for that ammount of time. As far as "juice" that we have as a school, I know we cant have it our way completely, but I do think that offering someone their first head coaching job at the D1 level. We would have a liitle more punch in the contractual fight than what you are suggesting. IMO.

P.S.
I know nothing about coaches contracts. This is all just wishfull thinking I guess.

Assume that we are. If we're to hire a coach without ambition we may as well not hire one at all.

I just dont agree....you cant tell me that Carry Green's, Tolsma's and others dont have ambition. You can find someone with the ambition to make Liberty compete at the national level. I much rather have Soucie or DL but that's just me

And for the record if he stayed for 5 years then that would be great I dont mind people using us for a stepping stone if staying that long....but I think it would only be 3 if he was successful and looked at us as a stepping stone....who knows I'm just saying what-if's not many people have talked about Odam's faith on here so I dont know what kind of guy he is or fit he'll be...maybe he'll be great!

In the end I dont think it's going to matter...I think they got their guy

Ha..very true..but if we keep finding the good fits first and foremost and then good coach's then at some point you might just stumble across one...but if we look good coach first and foremost and good fit last then our chances of being used and abused again are high

HMO......................

I think that the success of these coaches has alot to do with what sport they are coaching. Dont get me wrong, they are both great guys and good coaches.

However, to recruit Mcdougal to come to Liberty, do you know what Tolsma had to do..... NOTHING. Josh wanted to come. The same thing with alot of the track people. Its the nature of the beast.

Also It is alot easier to recruit women to come to Liberty to play basketball........ 1.) girls dont tend to have the same problem with the rules (this is a stretch)
2.) (much more valid point) Women in general are not looking at basketball as a career after basketball, Men are. This changes the recruiting battle a ton.

Each Sport at Liberty different in terms of talent that we can attract. I think the mens Basketball job is the hardest at the school.

With that being said, I would love to hire a "lifer", but in mens basketball, I could settle with a young guy that wants to build his resume.

Liberty athletics director Jeff Barber confirmed Tuesday that he’s had contact with five coaches who were rumored to be interested in the job, including current interim head coach Brad Soucie, who was the lead assistant on McKay’s staff.

Barber has also had “some form of communication” with Marquette assistant coach Dale Layer, Virginia Tech assistant coach Ryan Odom, Charlotte assistant coach Rob Moxley and Oklahoma assistant coach Mark Cline.

Former Rice coach Willis Wilson and Lee University coach Tommy Brown were also rumored to be interested in the post, but Barber said he has had no communication with either as of Tuesday afternoon

Question on Odom: Did he withdraw from consideration at HPU or did HPU go with someone else? I'm not sure I could live with myself if we had someone that wasn't up to Furniture U's standards.

I'm pretty sure that's the thinking that got us Ken Karcher.

That's what I thought. Most professional coaches will do more what A. Grant did than what RMK did. IMHO, what Grant did is not using and abusing, and I would be fine with someone doing that for us.

I like the Cline possibility--he's from West Virginia, so he would be living close to home.

Can someone explain why Odam is a better hire then Soucie?

I see it opposite. They have both only been assistant coach's, so neither have proved they can win as a HC. Most of the recruits will stay if Soucie gets the job. I dont think this would be a stepping stone for Soucie b/c he loves this place and is a really really good fit here.

So if I'm going to hire someone with only assistant coaching experience my pick would have to be Soucie

I haven't looked at it much, but one school of thought would be that his dad was a coach at the highest level and that he has been an assistant coach in higher levels than Soucie has been an assistant coach in.

That's not mentioning the obvious McKay connection that a lot of people feel dirty about. It's a guilt by association thing.
