This is tick-poor management. Sorry to say it like that, but still.

Instead of littering our roster with a bunch of untalented flunkies -- if they were talented, we'd win more games -- we should at least have a few slots reserved for designated grade getters.

We don't use a 12-man rotation. McKay uses seven a game most times. Why can't we give a basketball schollies to some people who'd up our cumulative GPA? Geez, guys. Seriously.

That's a cool feature on Flame Fans how it edits words that can be construed as "profanity". I didn't say "tick" in my last post...

We did. Jeremy Anderson is a 4.0. Ohman, who we are giving one to, is a Scholar Athlete, BJ, who had one, was above a 3. As much as I hate to do this, I am pretty sure that most of this had to do with RD's recruits, not McKay's... meaning there isn't anything that could really be done. It's in the past.

In 2003 RD had players on the team who were not his recruits. Some of them did not do well in school. So why don't we all just agree that we were doing things the wrong way and now hopefully we're doing them the right way.

Since this is from 03-04 – 06-07, I’d say it didn’t have much to do with McKay’s’ recruits

what I'm saying is that in 03-04 we had a number of Mel's players still on the team. The program and the players themselves are at fault. The Athletic Department has since wised up.

Did I say anything about RD?

Something which hasn't been mentioned is that when RD was let go, it's not like there was noone minding the store in the basketball program. Buck Romero has been the academic advisor all along, and Jason Eaker, who was then Director of Basketball operations was retained, along with Alexis Sherrard. If I'm not mistaken, they stayed in those transitional roles until sometime after McKay was hired. The idea that somehow McKay was responsibile for the academic success or failure of those players from the day RD left is ridiculous, and so is the implication that JB should have been personally micro-managing it. He did the responsible thing and left basically the same people in charge who had those responsibilities before until McKay could evaluate everything and make his own decisions. I suspect if someone didn't graduate in May, the problem started before Feb. 28.

and ultimately it comes down to the players themselves. It's not as if Buck and Jason are just sitting up in their offices playing xbox all day. They can provide all of the support in the world but if the players don't want to do school work, or maybe just aren't particularly bright, not much you can do.

Unless we can find some teachers to pass them anyway.

You can recruit kids that are solid students in high school, odds are they will be the same in college.

that increases your chances of sucking.

Case in point: We've started to "right the ship" yet we just offered a scholarship to someone who wound up being a non-qualifier. Not to mention Stephene had his academic troubles last year.

grm wrote:I'll give you a little spin. Dwight left after Randy was not renewed, and Damien did not graduate, which was under the watch of Barber/McKay. Figure those two in, and see what you get. Also, Elijah was dismissed out of necessity, and that hurt, and Rashad was along the same lines. In 2003-2004 men's bball had the highest APR on campus.

You might want to read this article from Sporting News ...

"NCAA hits men’s basketball hardest in APR results"

"Coaching changes. More than 70 percent of the basketball programs that earned an APR penalty experienced at least one coaching change during the four-year period that was measured. Most of those occurred because coaches were fired.
Coaching changes clearly have some effect on diminished APR,” said Walter Harrison, University of Hartford president and chair of the NCAA committee on academic performance. “We’re looking to see if we can’t find ways to address that.”
Either the NCAA ought to consider the disruption coaching changes cause for programs in terms of transfers and academic performance, or schools will have to pay greater attention to this issue when deciding whether it’s necessary to fire a coach."

To put this on Randy is a joke, and is very close to a lie from whoever first hinted at it. Again, check to see who lost Dwight, and who was watching Damien. I'm happy for the guys that have the program, but for goodness sakes, run it now and stop
looking to Randy every time you screw something up.
It looks to me that RD could say if there is no change....Brewington is eligible, Hubbard graduates and we don't sign a non- qualifer who comes in uniformed that he will need to pay $23,000.00 and not be on the scholarship he signed! Quick triggered AD's cover their mistakes by blaming subordinates. Looks like ours is quick to past the buck and play the blame game.

unless you are implying that our former coach was taking care of his family for him. Because that would be against the rules. If not than he's gone no matter who's coaching.

Now we're throwing TOTALLY irrelevant stuff against the wall hoping something will stick!

Johnnie Stephene has NOTHING to do with our APR. NOTHING!!!
There seems to be some kind of implication that he was misled or cheated about his scholarship, which is pure :BS Totally to the contrary, Stephene knew he hadn't qualified yet, and he could not get a schollie if he didn't. Once he found out, nobody held a gun to his head to keep him there. He was promised that if he went to class and got the grades to qualify for next year, there was a scholarship for him. That promise was made good on, even though I suspect they might have had to pass on a better prospect to do it.
