[quote="whmatthews"]This thread isn't pointless. Dunton's resume before LU was a high school coach in Alaska. [quote]

he coached at binghamton before coming to LU and Juco.

LoL...thats true...AG, come on...why else would names like Reeves (who's had a stellar record since leaving and quite a few different jobs) not to mention....COACH"S WOMEN! get thrown in the mix?

I was kind of surprised when he was hired back here. I think the first go around he went 11-17. But that team did manage to beat about the worse UVA team in the last 50 years, so I guess that impressed some folks.

When he came back a few years ago, did he bring back any of the stuff that he took when he left the first time?

I know (now) that JEFF MEYER is back in his home state serving as the assistant coach at the University of Indiana, but everyone has a price.

If we offered Meyer a blank check to come back to replace Dutton next year, would anybody seriously want him back?

It would be really nice to have a BIG named coach here at Liberty, but if we can't get that type of guy, do you think they would consider a guy like Ray Slagle from Cedarville University. I don't think he has a lot of experience at the D-I level, but has won at every level he has coached at. I know that is not what most would like, but bringing in a fundamentally sound coach like Slagle could be really good for us. The one thing I think we need as a smaller D-I university is to create a program that is consistant. I have not been able to follow the team in the past 5 years, but the one thing that bothered me about Dunton in his first stint as head coach was that the team seemed VERY inconsistant. I had a difficult time seeing a clear game plan from Dunton's teams. I felt he could recruit as good as anyone in the nation, but I felt his in game coaching was lacking many times. Slagle took a Cedarville program that was horrible, and in one season turned them into a team that is consistantly ranked in the top ten of the nation (although it is NAIA).

If we cannot land the big fish, why not build an offensively and defensively sound, fundamentally strong team? I'm not sure how well he would recruit, which is a HUGE part of the job, but he has done well in bringing in guys to Cedarville. I am not opposed to building a boring team if they can win at a consistant rate and give us a Big South championship once every 3-4 years. I wouldn't mind seeing a guy like Slagle given a chance. Of course I would LOVE to see a BIG named coach come in as well!

Why not get a hold of Steve Lavin the ESPN analysis......He was a pretty good coach at UCLA from 1996-2003....I think he had one bad season and was then canned......let's get in touch with the guy, and see what can happen

A UCLA coach isn't going to leave the cushion of ESPN and what he's getting paid there to come to Lynchburg, VA to coach at a little Christian school. His job at ESPN is too good.

plus i don't like his hair...kidding

i am sure if you throw enough money at a person they would think about it....but i don't think Liberty is going to throw too much money around....

I'm not for a coaching change at the moment.

However, if we were in the market for a new coach, wouldn't it make more sense to go after a top assistant from a program like Butler? Someone who knows something about building a mid-major program into a top 10 program, and also someone who knows how to win with mid-major talent?

Guys from big majors like UCLA and Duke pick regularly from the cream of the crop; we need a guy who knows how to win with mostly leftovers and scraps.

Wow, DOXsider must not have read your post. You know he HATES anything not D1. I tend to agree with you that we can find a GREAT coach who can win consistentlyand be here (and grateful) for a long time in some non D1 schools.

Mr. Haize:

No offense, but you really need to overcome this reading comprehension thing and the tendancy to add and distort someone else's statements. Unless of course there is some kind of self-gratification going on here and and that's your aim.

I mean, we approach things from different semantics at times and that's cool.

But, If you don't understand what someone is saying, then ask for a little more clarification.

I'd be glad to give it to ya--it's all in fun ya know,

DOX, no I got ya. I know we approach it from different perspectives. You dont think anyone NOT at the division 1 level is worthy to be made a division 1 head coach. Got it. I think there are some out there (and it looks like someone else does too - My Side : 2 Your Side : ?? :D ) and have more names than the Cedarville coach. What am I not getting?

No, it's not. Meyer's not coming back. That's the past. We're not here to talk about the past.

MOVE ON.

Mr, Mcguire, how would you feel about bringing Bob Davis back? LOL . I would LOVE to see BD back. BUT, I am fairly certain JB would rather put his stamp on the hire. Since we are mentioning UVA, should THAT name be brought up? And no, NOT Jeff Jones. (Although OUR cheerleaders may not provide the temptation VUA's did. Did I type that out loud?)

JEFF JONES is the one UVa and ACC coach that RD knows how to beat--and he has video footage to prove it!
