Warren Central's Jeremy Anderson drives to the basket this past season during Sweet 16 action at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

Jeremy Anderson has certainly left his mark on the basketball program at Warren Central.

Anderson, who signed with Liberty University in March, set the school's scoring record with more than 2,000 career points and also broke the mark for 3-pointers in a career.

The 6-foot-3 guard also helped the Dragons win a state championship as a freshman, finish as runners-up as a sophomore and make the semifinals as a senior.

Today, he was named the first Bowling Green Daily News Male Athlete of the Year as the top Warren County prep athlete for the past school year.

Warren Central guard Jeremy Anderson, a member of The Courier-Journal's first-team All-State team, picked Liberty over Texas Christian, Air Force and Montana.
Kentucky basketball must have had a down year this past season if that's the schools a first-team all-Kentucky player is choosing between.

He could have and probably was recruited by more schools but those were his final choices. Again, so much more than playing in the Big East or ACC goes into the recruiting process.

Personally, I think that this kid is a good fit with outstanding leadership qualities and great shooting range.

Secondly, I wanted to touch on something that Scar said about the ACC and Big East. Anderson did not choose us over the Big Ten, Big East, or ACC, but rather a marginal Big Sky school, a bottom feeder Mountain West school and a very unique Air Force program that requires a military commitment after graduation.

Having said that, I'm hoping that Anderson turns out to be one of those overlooked guys that could have played in the SEC, but they passed on him, and McKay, in a very savvy way, reeled him in.

I didn't say HE made that choice Dox, I just said, we don't know everything about everyone's recruiting process. I had a teammate that went to Iona. At the time he and I were the only division 1 players in our school's history. After he signed with Iona, his father showed him dozens of letters from Dean Smith and 2 of them Deano offered him a full grant-in Aid (scholly). His father didn't want him to go to UNC and sit on the bench for 2 or 3 years. All I am saying is there are so many variables that take place during the process. Plus there is a lot of insecurity with recruiting. You may catch the eye of a big time school but the coach doesn't want to recruit the kid because no one else in his conference is recruiting him yet. Evaluating Talent is not an exact science. I know for a fact when I played that I was better than some of my friends that played in the big east and the atlantic 10. When we would go to playgrounds around the city, I would get picked before most guys due to my rep. They didn't care that I played at Liberty or that my boy played at Temple. That kind of stuff only matters to fans, not coaches and players to an extent. Of course it matters to everyone because we all have pride and would like to say, yes I started at UConn or Texas or UNC. But none of that matters when you are actually playing or coaching in the games, practice, pickup, the playground etc....As far as Jeremy is concerned, I hear he is a great fit for Liberty and Richie McKay especially. His type of player.

Also let me just say that UNC was in on Chip (my boy) late in his decision making process and communication was not what it is today. His dad controlled all the mail and the letters that came to the school or even phone calls had to go through him. Now you can just text a kid or email or even call the kid directly on his cell. Times are really different than when this old hag went to school :P

Players such as Anderson, with his work ethic and commitment, tend to make everyone around him better and more committed to the program as a whole.

Also, one of the things that I most appreciate about McKay is that he's not sitting back, assumming that he is set at any position. He's proactive and not passing on quality talent such as Anderson and Stephene. McKay understands that if he can maintain some real skill and leadership at the 1 and 2, then things will quickly turn around for this program.

Sounds like an admission that the program was in need of "turning around."

Obviously, the program needs to continue to move forward and reach higher. And we certainly have moved forward and reached higher, with the addition of McKay.

The previous coach had his ups and downs and in the true context of the situation he made us much better than we were prior his arrival after the Hankinson disaster.

McKay is starting out in a more favorable position, and he obviously brings significantly more to the table than any coach that we've ever had. In addition, his disciplinary approach should work well at LU. So, in my opinion, McKay and his staff will ultimatlely elevate this program to a much higher level down the road.
