Manger, I agree completely. We need to promote a game as "The Flames are Red Hot" and encourage everyone to wear red shirts. The first ____ in the game get free ones. It costs 5 bucks to print a t-shirt. Get a company to sponsor it and slap their logo on the back of the t-shirt. I'm sure there's some company in Lynchburg that'll pay $500 to get their logo slapped on the back of 100 t-shirts.

Why did they stop giveaways, they always did them when I was there and its only been a couple years?

This seems like a no brainer.

:?

Also, and this probably doesn't have much to do with the attendance going down (just a thought) there is a lot more to do on campus right now than there was 5 years ago. Skating, new buildings and facilities, swimming etc...more shopping in the burg.

I remember coming to games during my years 98-02 and wondering why it wasn't like it was during the Aluma days. Some people said allowing TV's in the dorm rooms probably cut down on the attendance.

Its sad we should have to bribe our students to show up at games that cost them nothing out of pocket on gameday. Does anyone on campus realize we are winning and have a great product to watch?

you're right you shouldn't have to bribe students...but then reality hits....when there is no kind of athletic traditions and there is nothing special about the game atmosphere for the students, there is no reason for them to come....I always come when not working, but its because i love sports and see no reason not to support my school....not everybody loves sports so much to where they want to come out, so you have to give them a reason....at first, if they enjoy themselves and the team is winning then they will continue to come back....plus doesn't part of the $225 activity fee go to athletics??? Just curious

It isn't sad, it's a fact of life. Even good teams have to "bribe" their students to get to games. There were two promotions last night. We should take advantage of every full timeout to do promotions and things like that.

Not everyone likes sports, but if they can go somewhere where there is a good atmosphere and they can have fun then they will go. Football is easy to attract people because everyone knows they are on Saturday. Someone can just ask, "Is the football game home this week?" For basketball you have to ask what day and plan around that day. That makes football a whole lot easier. There have got to be ways to market this team other than mentioning them in convo. The little red thing filled with air certainly isn't doing it.

You know, I just remembered that some student suggested hanging banners around campus at, say, the tunnel to east, the courtyard, and LaHaye advertising when a game was but for some reason or another that hasn't even been considered. It's not hard to buy a banner and paint, "Men's Basketball Tuesday 7pm" and hang it up. It's not even that expensive. It just takes some effort. I'm only critical because I know it can be done better. I have been at a school with less students and less resources and witnessed things get marketed better than here. That's what the Student Flames Club should be doing but then again, that thing went down the crapper faster than, nevermind, that joke was just nasty. Does that club even exist anymore? They didn't rope it off last night.

Winning will help things, but you have to market the team as well.

I was impressed with sj as I watched on the feed. Made me feel like I was a part of the "in group."
SCAR definitely got a kick out of it.

Good job, again, to SCAR. Your partner makes you look like a little boy, but that's o.k. Nothing wrong with being a big man. Just an observation.

Here's a tradition: Bring the freakin' COWBELL back!
I talked to the band and their reason for not having it: "That guy didn't come back to school."
So what... is he the only one with the musical ability to play a friggin' cowbell.
I'll play it if nobody else will do it. And I can't even see that well inside the big sweaty bird. But I can stay on beat.

I couldn't even make out most of the stuff the band was playing. We need a real pep band.

Pep band, one credit hour in the fall, two credit hours in the spring. I bet they'd get more people to do it then.

I think that must be the band's answer for everything "Take it up with Dr. Kerr" because that's what the other kids in the band told me one night when I said the cowbell should come back.

Do you have one? I'll play it when the band plays that one song that it's supposed to be played with. Cause dang it, I got a fever... and you know what the prescription is.

No, my cowbell is sitting in the backyard of Krystle Ludwig in Conway, SC.

I'll freaking buy one if it'll make the atmosphere better.

The accoustics in Vines are terrible, which makes the drums sound awful. Being a drummer myself, I hate it.

Not to mention they need to mic everything. You can't hear half of the instruments and others, you can only hear them. It's just ugly.

I wasn't at the game to hear the band, but I would expect a separate pep band to be formed within the next couple years. What we have now is the Jazz Ensemble doubling as the pep band, so rehersal time is mainly devoted to the Jazz Ensemble music. Also, after the season started, they were requested to play at all of the home men's and women's games, which has caused some members to leave the ensemble due to the time commitment being too much.
I am personally in favor of a brass band, which many schools have as the pep band. At the moment, however, we don't have enough faculty and players to form one. Not to mention the 13 Living Christmas Tree preformances that the brass section members, and Dr. Kerr, had played in the last two weeks.
