My two cents of the game

This was the first time I saw these guys play this year. I am going to the UVA game on Saturday so I will get an even better look.

Do we ever run offensive sets?? The offense basically seems like its the Davon and JCS show. It seems like those two guys really only pass to each other either when they are stuck or so they do not look like ball hogs. I have always stated this I cannot wait for JCS to be gone. Never liked his game and I think he is similiar to the Carmelo Anthony type (minus the serious talent) where he just completely hinders the offense from running. Way too much dribbling going on between Sanders and Marshall..swing the ball and make the D work.

The zone UNCW ran completely had us looking like we lost our heads..what happened to sending a guy high post and working the high low with three wings swinging the ball around. This is simple basketball to me..I just dont get it.

I have always been a fan of Gielo but I do not think I have ever seen him be efficient from beyond the arc. I feel like he should be moved to high post at this point in his career. He is not quick enough to get by the guards from outside the arc. He is very slow to make a move and most of his moves are sideways and not to the basket. I think that issue is solved if he playes 15ft and in. He did have a couple nice drives at the end of the game but he was a lot more decisive and efficient with his moves. Stop holding the ball..make a move to the basket or pass it.

UNCW was not a good team, their guards were probably some of the most unathletic guards I have ever seen in D1. That was a bad loss.

Andrew Smith should be playing more. He might make some bonehead plays and I thought he would be better at this point but he at least brings energy and athleticism.

I like Retic and his size..I think he should be running the PG position as he has a knack creating for people other than himself (unlike Davon and JCS)

Last point, I wish I was about 10 years younger. I could have easily played serious minutes on this team instead of riding the pine under the seriously talented teams of 03-04 and 04-05. I am not trying to bring up the name we must not speak of but DANG I could have gotten some serious burn with the talent we have..thats not saying much for the current team or myself!!!!!!!!

PS.
Highlight of the game came from SCAR when Smith had that follow up dunk..SCAR said the bank is open today but sometimes people prefer direct deposit...that gave me a good laugh. You are the man SCAR!!!

High Lows don't work too well against most match up zones. In fact your better match up zones almost beg you to throw it into the high post. Playing the HP is such a lost art most players don't know what to do with the ball even if they do get it there. Ball reversals and skip passes can work wonders.
Retic looked dazed and confused out there.
SCAR made the best point of the night. Basketball is a rythm game. We play with no rythm until late in the game which is no recipe for success
Coach Layer looks very very frustrated which leads me to believe there are some locker room/chemistry issues.

I'm guessing on December 17 vs Howard...

Thats what my issue is...working in the high post needs to be taught to this team..specially Gielo..his game is perfect for it

Then your issue is with how basketball is being taught and played in general.

I've been wrong before so I wouldn't exactly make that sort of an absolute statement, even in jest postie.

You were the one complaining about the lack of a Hi/low approach to the match up zone last night. I'm just pointing out that A- it's not a particularly effective tactic and B- No one teaches how to play high post at any level anymore. It's not off topic. It's just not something you can ding this staff for

I can ding the staff for it because they arent even attempting anything else other than watching JCS and Davon try to score and pass to themselves..this team makes no adjustments whatsoever. Attakcing the high post is an option, is it the only option no..but I believe we have players who have the skills to play the high post quite well. The best option is ball movement, skip passes and working the corners, but I dont think we have player that do that very well.. I guess my main point is where are the adjustments, the creativity????
