I will be more well prepared for a Big South hoops season than I have ever been after putting these together. Ha.

Good write up Jon. I think Antwan is going to help the outside shooting by creating a true back to the basket scoring threat on the post. Twan avg 11 ppg his Jr year and I'm not sure they even ran that many plays for him. He scored shooting the step out baseline jumper and then getting put backs on the glass. His footwork looks pretty solid in the post from what I have seen so I can see him going around bigger defenders and exploding to the hoop.

JR Coronado looks like he is in great shape as well. He was borderline fat last year and still was able to be a top rebounder. You could see him playing his way into shape throughout the year but now he looks like fatigue won't be a problem. I look for him to finish better around the basket and perhaps improve the rebounding.

Cabe is a key cog but if he isn't able to go for a while or even decides to redshirt, I think there are enough back court players on this team to fill in. I am Cabe's biggest supporter and have been defending the kid for 4 years like I was his agent on this board but this team is deep and can still win without him. 15 ppg doesn't just grow on trees though and the way he and Davon played together at the end of the season was really fun to watch. You could see how much they understood each other and trusted one another. I hope Cabe is back 100% on Friday.

Don't forget to watch Nick Pierce and me on Friday night for the opener vs. Randolph College (cheap plug) on the Big South Webstream which is FREE!!!!!

If LU gets good guard play and outside shooting, I think Flames will be better than last season.

Over the past seven years, we have seen tremendous growth in Liberty athletics. Facilities have exploded from bottom rung Division 1 venues to top quality locations for the sports they feature. Crowd support has gone from nearly non-existent to a football stadium packed with thousands of students and fans from across the area. While the focus has largely been on football, the men’s basketball program has made progress under Coach Dale Layer, which culminated last season with Liberty’s 3rd appearance in the NCAA tournament.

It’s time for the support football sees from students, fans, and the administration to spread to basketball. College basketball is one of the most exciting, momentum fueled spectacles in all of sports, and Liberty has a team that stepped up to the game’s biggest stage last season. There is simply no good reason that our school shouldn’t be packing the Vines Center on a regular basis. There is no rain or snow. The climate is quite comfortable in the Vines Center. It is still free for students. The facility is a great place to watch a game. The team is good, and improving. The piece that is missing is support from students and fans.

JCS is obviously a key player, but really like what I've seen from Casey Roberts, and Joe Retic this year. I think Chad Donley can play too..
We can win games with with these guys if need be.

I thought we had heard sanders was just holding out more as a precaution a few weeks ago. Is he in danger of missing considerable time?

I think he will be in there on Friday perhaps but if he isn't I don't think he will miss that much time. The last time I spoke to him in person a few weeks ago he was progressing nicely.

Flames Nation wrote:Frontcourt depth a strength for Flames

Liberty boasts one of the deepest frontcourts it has had in recent memory. With the return of Antwan Burrus this season, the Flames have 5 frontcourt players with starting experience. Burrus, Drew Smith, JR Coronado, Joel Vander Pol, and Sommy Ogukwe have combined to start 133 games in their careers.

This group averaged 13 points and 17.8 rebounds in 60 minutes a game last season. Not bad at all. Throw in Antwan’s 11.2 points and 6.3 rebounds he averaged his junior season, and suddenly you’re approaching all-conference type numbers for this group combined.

I think 4-3 is about what we could be looking at unless these guys start eating their Wheaties again. Losses to VMI, Radford and CCU, wins over everyone else including the first ever win at Longwood

The Big South is so weak this year that LU will win their fair share of games... 2 wins over Longwood, Campbell, High Point; split with VMI, Radford. That is 8 right there.... They beat PC, CCU, & Winthrop. 11-5. Tie for first in North with Radford. Gives them 17 wins then a run in the tournament.

Hopefully we will peak again come tournament time. We simply do not look very good right now. We need better production out of the guards. Get this and I think frontcourt will hold their own.

I hope we actually win some games before heading into the tournament. Then of course, win the tournament
