Oh the offense is pass it around the wing, then someone penetrate and kick out or take a hideous shot. We were best in transition with Marshall pulling up or kicking to Speaks for mid range. It's a tough watch, no doubt.

Not sure why people thought the shot selection tonight was a problem. The offense got us quite a few mid range jumpers and low post put back attempts, we just missed pretty much all of them for the first 12 minutes of the 2nd half. There was a 3-4 minute stretch where Marshall missed a jumper in the paint, Speaks missed two 15 foot jumpers, and Coronado/Smith missed a combined 4 put backs from right next to the rim. If the offense gets us those kinds of looks on a regular basis then scoring better not be a problem.

Post play will get better as Coronado gets back into basketball shape/shakes off the rust. SCAR said during the broadcast that there was some sort of eligibility issue that didn't get worked out until about 10 days ago so he couldn't practice with the team until then. He and Smith both showed good passing skills from the post. Once we get Burrus back into the mix, the low post will have at least a solid 4 man rotation with Gielo a possible 5th option that could allow us to play big from time to time.

Marshall, Jourdan and Speaks look like they'll work well together once they've got some game experience to figure each other out and build some chemistry. Roberts may give us a 4 legit guards. Agreed with everyone on Sanders. He's just not good enough to be anything but a guy who comes off the bench and gets a few extra minutes the nights his shot is on. Donley, like Sanders, seems like a classic chucker and needs to not see the court on nights where his first few shots are off. I wouldn't be surprised if Taylor sees increased minutes over the course of the season if Sanders and Donley continue to be so one dimensional.

Overall, not as bad a night as some are saying, but there's no way so many good shots should miss for that long of a period of time. The 30-5 run was more about us missing good shots than W&M doing anything defensively that really affected us.

Methinks someone put a cover on the basket at the W&M end of the court in the first half. Unfortunately, they forgot to chage it at the half.

I have never quite understood Coach Layer's offensive system. It just simply consists of passing around the perimeter and maybe dump down to the post for 2 seconds and then once the shot clock is under 10 someone either throws up a long 3 or drives throwing up an contested layup with a ridiculous degree of difficulty.

When we were pushing the ball down the court in the first half and really in attack mode we were much better.

I just don't get the system at all

We had nowhere to go but up after the Richmond game, and I feel like we made some progress. I´m still hopeful that when we get Burrus, Gielo and possibly JVP back in the mix we can be pretty good in time for conference play. Right now we have a ton of guys who have never played together and have never played D1 basketball. Take out our 3 most experienced big guys, and it´s not surprising we have struggled.

+1

Does anybody know what's wrong with Gielo and Burrus and/or when they'll be back?

I've never seen a motion offense that doesn't stop to look for a cutter. They just keep going... and going. Instead of moving towards the basket, their momentum from the motion carries them further out!

It's too jerky. Even when we get a decent lane to the basket, we have a hard time finishing with our lack of athleticism. The only "finisher" we have right now is Smith, and if it's not a dunk, it's not a guarantee he'll even hit rim.

After a tough few seasons, I think we have finally restocked the cupboard - with all of these upper-classmen, we'll be able to develop our fresh/soph slowly instead of rushing them in to play... if we can keep them here long enough.

Sanders is terrible aside from Marshall I am not too confident in our guards...although Roberts showed a little something. Bottom line there is no guard or forward who can penetrate and draw the defense in.

What do y'all think of Coronado? I was at the game Friday and watched last night. He's so raw but he has some flashes of offensive post moves that could develop. I don't know if 2 years is enough though, he could really benefit from a summer big man camp.

He had a really nice up-and-under move for an easy basket in the first half.

He puts a weird spin on the ball whenever he dribbles - and got called for traveling twice because of it. I don't know what's up there but I'm sure it will be addressed.

The comparisons to Ace were way off, IMO, but he's probably the most skilled big man we've had since McLean. Ogukwe and Vander Pol are going to be solid players but Coronado seems to have better hands and footwork under the basket.

I think JR will get there..he is obviously rusty due to the eligibility issues since he was just cleared last Thursday, but nonetheless I think he will get there. Honestly I think we need to feed the post just about every possession with our weak guard play.

Mid range jumpers are one of the most inefficient shots in basketball...

Since the college data isn't available, I'll use data rom the last 82-game NBA season in 2010-11.

League average effective FG% from different distances:
At rim - 64.2%
3-9 feet - 36.8%
10-15 feet - 36.6%
16-23 feet - 38.5%
Threes - 52.3%

There's a reason why I said that. There's a reason why Boeheim's zone is designed so that midrange jumpers are the weak spot. There's a reason why teams want to limit three pointers and paint points. There's a reason why the European game has an even great proliferation of three point shooting than VMI n it's heyday of running the system. It's because midrange jumpers are inefficient. If your team is shooting a bunch of midrange jumpers, chances are you're going to lose unless you've compiled a team with a bunch of great midrange shooters.

We can't create shots individually. It hurts when our initial set doesn't work and we are left with 15 seconds on the shot clock. I suggest taking more open looks even if they are not exactly what we want in the first 20 seconds of the shot clock.

The reason for the percentages for mid range jumpshots is 1 simple reason. More mid range jumpshots are taken then 3 pointers...nothing more than that. Other then the fact that sense the 3 point shot has been introduced more and more kids growing up spend more time throwing up 3's while messing around then they do mid range jump shots. The mid range jumpshot is a lost art.

Just my opinion

Except, we weren't doing that. The offense was getting looks in the mid range and paint areas pretty regularly, we just missed a bunch of easy shots. We only took 18 3pt shots yesterday.

In the 1st half we were in more of attack mode and took quality shots. The 2nd half we did not.

You just further reinforced my statements. Mid range jumpers aren't practiced as much, most people can't shoot them well. That's why defenses want to force people to take them. Unless the team has a bunch of good mid range shooters, shooting them with much frequency isn't going to resort in many points being scored.

We need to adapt VMI's offense. Run the floor, shoot a 3 or a layup. Running a half court set offense, is a turn over waiting to happen, or a forced shot to beat the clock.
