How could you possibly keep kids from leaving early? It's a huge problem for large programs that allocate seating priority for big games by previous attendance. Students show up for the game against Morehead St scan their ticket and leave so the computer will give them enough credit to get tickets for the game against UCLA. I don't know why we think we can stop it.

Maybe we could do something like give the kids a card when they got there and the only way to get excused from class is to get the card stamped, but only stamp the cards after the game ends.

That's EXACTLY what they are doing. Here's the rest of the story (also from the email):

To verify attendance, cards will be handed out as students enter the Vines Center. This applies only to students who are attending who are normally in a 9:15 or 10:50 class. When these students leave the Vines Center, the cards will be punched. Cards will be handed out and punched at all Vines Center exits. When the students return to class, they must give the professor the punched card. Without the card, the absence will not be treated as excused.

The only way you're excused from classes for the game is if you stay the entire game, thus forcing our kids to not leave like they normally would.

If LU runs like any other legitimate business/organization, and your job doesn't involve "essential services", it would be up to each person's supervisor whether they can (or choose to) be flexible with hours to allow something like that. If your boss is a fan and wants to go him/herself, I would plan on working.

Students are reminded that classes are not cancelled, but those with classes at 9:15 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. will receive an excused absence for attending the entire game. Tickets for the excused absence will be handed to students as they enter the arena through the turnstiles. Each ticket will consist of rules on one side and a blank side used for validation after the game. Students are only allowed one ticket, which will be handed out until tipoff. At the end of the game, two stations will be set up at every door for the tickets to be validated as students leave the Vines Center. Validation will not begin until the game is final.
