My pipe dream would be Mike Young as head coach with Jason as his top assistant.
I fail to see the similarities between Moton and RMK. Ritchie had a long track record of leaving after a few years. Moton had regular jobs for 8 years after college, then coached 3 years at one HS and came to his Alma Mater as an assistant in 2007 before being named HC in 2010. His record at NC Central is impressive to say the least, and if not for the fact that he played ball and graduated from NCC I can't think of a single reason he wouldn't jump at the LU job if offered.
I'm not talking track record. I'm talking personality. He's the flashy recruiter with not much substance.

Threw this bone out there a few pages ago. Dave Davis is an excellent coach and Newberry fans love him. He's recruited well there and has a great record to show for it.

Newberry's offense is so much fun to watch. These guys do a great camp at Guilford College every year. I'd take coach Davis in a heartbeat.

Barclay would be a great fit but he's not going to leave CSU for another Big South school after winning the league. If we were going Sun Belt, it'd be a possibility.

You realize we're just throwing out names, right?

Overall record as HC 103-51 (.669)
Conference record 54-8 (.871)

Yes, I know it's the MEAC, but I would still call that substance. I might also add that last I checked recruiting is pretty important in NCAA basketball and failure to do it effectively is largely blamed for Layer's lack of success.

Would love to see R-Jay Barsh here. He's done great things at Southeastern. They went to the final four last season. They were the first team out of the tournament this season with a young team and their best players not playing due to academic problems.

A very well-known coach and friend of mine once told me that while a coaching job entails many administrative responsibilities, just the coaching boils down to three things:
1) Recruit them
2) Teach them
3) Motivate them

I'm saddened that a couple bad breaks in #1 may have hurt Coach Layer (plus the injuries), because the man is absolutely top-notch at #2 and #3. The truly great are superb at all three. Any coach who is accomplished in at least two of the three is going to be very good. There are MANY coaches who have made long careers out of just one (take your pick of which one).

A head coach must be honest about where his/her strengths lie, and then surround themselves with people who help in their areas of deficiency. None of us is perfect, nor can we do it all, and coaches are no different. It is possible that even assistants accomplished in other areas can be held back by a head coach who micro-manages each area - especially recruiting. It's just amazing how quickly bad things can snow-ball.

Jeff Meyer yes.

Ritchie no.
Jeff is 60 years old. I may be the biggest fan he has on this board, but I think the window of opportunity for him to return has passed. Ritchie won't turn 50 til next month.

Will you pass that along to our baseball coach?

That is funny, but in fact one of the biggest benefits of getting the firing out of the way so fast is it allows more time to find the right replacement.
