It is WAY too early to be making those types of postulations, jcmanson. Get back with me in January.

The new recruit is Bill Weaver, an athletic swing player from Tidewater and a straight A student. A thread on him has been started.

How could you know? None of us have even seen a video of Sammy Jackson, and although I had to do a lot of digging to find any info on what he did last year, from what I did see he wasn't exactly tearing up the JUCO ranks. The very fact that Jackson was attending a JUCO would indicate we have undoubtably upgraded our team GPA by bringing in a 4.0 student in Weaver. Next years team will have even less physicality inside than we thought, but more athleticism and smarts.

There's several reasons why.

Let's hear them, or at least one of them (besides the fact that we are losing some muscle, which we will all acknowledge).

Don't come on here and say it's a bad thing and then cop out and not say why. IMHO both of the changes in our recruiting class were upgrades, with an emphasis on the grades, but also on the court.

For starters, we all knew this coming year was going to be a rebuilding year. We knew/know there will be some ups and downs. I'm delighted to have Coach Mckay and I'm glad he is rebuilding us primarily (well totally now) with youth. However, fast-forward 4 years from now when we will have 7 graduating seniors. That means we will have, at most, 6 returners the following year. We will be rebuilding again.

With at least one JUCO we would have cut that down to 6 which is more manageable than 7. Still tough, but more manageable.

That's a valid point manson. I personally am not too worried about what is going to happen 4 years down the road. I trust this staff to be able to use that time to plan ahead rather than do quick fixes like we have tried in the past. Also, bringing in another top notch student makes it almost a sure thing that we will get back both of our scholarships, and that is a VERY good thing.

Something must have happened with Sammy, since we cannot renig on his LOI just because we like someone else better. Either he changed his mind or he didn't graduate.

One word ... attrition.

And I wouldn't rule out a redshirt for somebody although I admit I wouldn't want to guess who at this point.

:exactly Although this class seems to have been put together for retention, as roles are defined and playing time is allocated, there is likely to be one or more who opt to move on for basketball reasons. Of course it may also turn out that LU is simply not the place for all of them.

Strange as it seems, any redshirting would probably happen in 09-10. Since we will be short 2 scholarships next year a voluntary shirt would be a major hardship.

Another possibility, which has never really been a factor at LU previously, is that someone like Seth Curry could actually end up leaving early for the NBA!

I would like to hope there wouldn't be much attrition. That was a BIG negative with the previous staff, and I'm sure was/is a concern for JB when he was looking for a replacement.

I think what we want to minimize is the "non-basketball" attrition for things like academic and disciplinary issues. Then if the occasional player who gets buried on the depth chart decides to move on to get PT somewhere else, that's fine.

Yep...plus the trend is that the athletes who do better in the classroom do better on the court/in the field (i.e. Allyson Faschnact WBB, Jordan Jenkins WT)

I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about our standing with the NCAA. We seem to be clearly headed in the right direction after acquiring players from institutions like Rice & Brown in exchange for potential non-qualifying recruits.

Sammy Jackson is not a non-qualifier.

So, do you know why he is not coming to LU? Based on the timing the most likely reason is that he fell short of getting his associate degree. While that may not technically make him a non-qualifier, it's pretty much the same thing. It's also possible he just decided not to come, or to go somewhere else, and we released him. Haven't heard anything yet.

OK, I just found out it's not academic, but can't say any more right now. Apologies to Sammy for doubting him.

then what is it? Maybe we let him go and it wasn't his decison?

We can't do that. It has to be mutual. It's a binding contract.

It will be out there eventually. The only option, other than an non-qualifier, is that he requested a release and it was granted.

ok, with the purge/exodus of the roster, next year was always gonna be up in the air. So all of this recruit crazyness really isn't that big of a deal. But I really hope the musical chairs game we're playing is kind of a one time thing before we have an established team.
