Dang I missed the vote! Can I send in a absentee ballot to fire layer?? Btw maybe we should adjust the pay scale of our base salaries and offer more bonuses to win !! Seems to be a losing trend for most LU coaches in men's basketball .

It is very true that it doesn't matter where players come from if they can play. For whatever the reason, other BSC schools are getting good players from state of Virginia, and LU is not.

Thats why I said we need someone who is (and assembles a staff that is as well) comfortable recruiting anywhere and everywhere, including Virginia.the 757 has been a regular bumper crop of good talent flor the D1 level

Good point BJ on "the staff". When it comes to recruiting the Staff is very important. When I was a high school Assistant Coach, I met a lot of Assistant Coaches from colleges on the recruiting trail.

There is no obession of getting a player from Virginia. But it makes one wonder, when good players end up at other BCS schools, rather than LU.

I fully agree that if a player can play, it makes no difference where he is from, be it Virginia, Texas, Montana or Vermont, or the utter most parts of the earth.

But I think LU needs to put more effort in recruiting the state.

A player who has played in state or even in the area will have a better chance of getting more people interested in the program than a kid from Texas. Caveat being the kid from Texas is a top 5 recruit.
Let's look at someone like Marshall Wood as a hypothetical. If he were playing at LU there would be a bunch of people in the area who saw him play on high school who would come to see him play at LU The majority of which wouldn't go out of their way to go to an LU game at all. So it can be and is a nice benefit to get butts in seats.

yes but it doesnt always mean an upgrade in talent..the local area is not good in basketball..outisde of Norther VA, the 757 and the 804 there are very few who can play D1. A small precentage of those guys would barely be interested in Liberty.

Good observation PurpleHaize.

Our attendance is worse than our won-lost record. I think the administration needs to take measures to get more fans in the Vines Center. Granted if we were winning and winning big, attendance would be better, but with LU's demographics and location, attendance should be good every game.

That is true. Playing a half court offense, hoping to be able to get ball inside to a big man, after draining shot clock , isn't gonna fill too many arenas.

When ball crosses mid court stripe, start looking for the shot. You cannot run a set play everytime in basketball like you can in football.

I imagine we don't have the speed or athleticism to run and gun like most teams. We have to dictate our pace to be competitive which we are. Coach knows this that's why we are deliberate on offense is my guess. He's playing an offensive scheme that matches the talent he has at this moment. With Smith and Geilo returning and the crop of recruits coming in, the offensive strategy may change some IMHO.

I disagree. The attendance is decent especially when considering the product. The attendance at LU is up considerably from what it was even just 2-3 years ago. Obviously it is down right now because who wants to go watch a team lose to BSC schools who barely have enough money to pay the lights yet out recruits and outplays us.

Your question was about the obsession about recruiting Virginia. Obviously if there is a superior player from Kansas you go for that. But there has been a handful of players within an hour radius that would have been interested in playing at LU if LU had been interested in them. They are now playing at other D1 institutions.

That makes no sense. On one hand you say its up. Then you say its down. Then you say its decent considering the product on the floor :dontgetit

Winning will put butts in the seats, regardless of where the players are from. Seems to me, I remember many, many years ago, when we had a couple of players from Nigeria, Wyoming and other far off lands, the Vines center was full, even on a weeknight and with less than half the resident students we have now. In fact LU used to be a basketball school. We are obviously far from it now. All we have to do is WIN, don't need a freak show at halftime to draw a crowd.

Oh I agree that winning covers over a host of ills. And no one is saying take a less talented local kid over a more talented kid from Ohio.
Plus, no one needs to hear from SLY if we find a kid who can play frm Texas!
