Some thoughts regarding both teams:
First Liberty ...
1. There was a play in the second half where I felt like the Flames started to "get it." Zeglinski gets a steal, tries a spin move to break free and get the fast break started. Austin Smith sells out, dives to tip the ball away, and the Flames regain possession. That didn't happen last week.
2. McKay said he didn't berate his team, but he did simplify things a bit this week and stressed getting back to basics.
3. Kyle Ohman went back to being Kyle Ohman. He moved around, got open shots and took opportunities to drive when they presented themselves. He didn't force anything. That's when he's at his best.
4. McMasters has some sort of foot injury, x-rays were negative, they'll know more later in the week.
5. Baker dressed, didn't play. He told me it's a bone bruise in his left foot and that it's quite painful and annoying.
6. This is not a signature Virginia team, but considering where Liberty was a week ago, it's a signature victory to go on the road and beat an ACC team that had been finding ways to win games.
Now Virginia ...
1. I think Zeglinski is going to be a nice player for the Cavs. Deceptively athletic, a little bouncier than you'd expect. Makes good decisions and can hit the 3 ball. The shot he hit with about 15 seconds left was from 27 feet out with three LU players in his face. The kid has some stones. He took the loss pretty hard and looked upset during the postgame interview session.
2. Virginia is not sound defensively. Nothing against Kyle, but there's no way he should be able to beat ACC players with head fakes the amount of times he did tonight. And on Sanders' one bucket, the whole Cavalier defense fell asleep. The ol' Linda Rondstadt defense, as a coaching friend of mine used to call it. ... "The Blue Bayou .. or blew by you."
3. Virginia didn't respond well at all to Liberty's zone. The Cavs tried to play the game from 15 feet and out. They needed to fight to get Mike Scott the ball, and he admitted he didn't work hard enough to get touches.
4. Mustapha Farrakhan wouldn't start at any Big South school. I'm not sure why Leitao keeps trotting him out there.
5. UVa didn't go big because Soroye, Sene and Brandenburg are all very limited offensively, and they'd be defensive liabilities trying to defend Liberty's perimeter guys.
6. As I said after the Liberty-UNCA game ... "take a deep breath, it's one game." Virginia's young. I don't think they'll win more than five or six ACC games. Then again, I didn't think VT would do much in league last year and they surprised me.
Reporters from Richmond and Roanoke both questioned how the heck a kid like Seth Curry couldn't get a look from an ACC school.
