A few years ago I covered a game where Tracy McGrady scored 11 points in the final 30 seconds to lead the Rockets to a victory over the Spurs. But those games are ridiculously rare.

The Liberty Flames (14-6, 5-3) scored 14 straight points over the final 1:43 to overcome a nine point deficit and escape with their second straight conference road victory, defeating the High Point Panthers (5-13, 1-7 BSC), 61-56, Tuesday night, inside the Millis Athletic Center.

The Flames scored a total of 24 points off High Point turnovers, including eight in the final minute of play to help Liberty win in the Millis Athletic Center for the first time since Jan. 31, 2004.

Yeah. Amazing comeback. Some of you may remember the Duke comeback against Maryland 4 or 5 years ago. It was similar. I think Duke was down 10 or 11 with a mininute or so to play.

I recall the Tracy McGrady thing. Unbelievable. Back in 1993 my high school team came back from 17 down in 2 minutes to win the NACA national championship. Still can't believe that one.

I have no inside knowledge of the seating arrangements, but if the AD is giving seats behind the bench to older folks there is likely a large financial reason why they are there. Just a hunch.

JE is JE, and again he frustrated me at times during the course of the game, but I thought he did a great job of conveying the feeling of what was transpiring in that last 1:43. Kudos are in order. He was truly the voice of the Flames last night

One thing touched on by JE in the postgame interview which we haven't discussed is the fact that Bill Weaver and James Spencer were on the floor for much of that comeback. They were inserted to foul if needed, but instead were a part of the defense which forced the turnovers which led to Smitty and Kyle's offensive heroics.

Oh, that's exactly what it is. I know that. You know that. Everyone knows that. I know it happens. I know it has to happen. I just don't like it. If I was an AD, I would think it would be a good problem to have. Having too many people want tickets is a lot better than having nobody want tickets.

Spencer has done a great job when called on. Having Jesse and Stepene go against him in practice isn't a bad thing, either. I can't remember the last time we had this many players who were able to contribute in some way.

1) For the LUnatics - I can hear you like crazy on my computer as I listen to Jerry. Often, you are matching the home crowd, enough so that I am surprised to hear that you were in the rafters - so - be encouraged.

2) I have enjoyed Realist over the years, and we'll know more after Winthrop comes to the Vines, but right now, I'd say it is nearly impossible to say that WU is better than LU.

High Point’s 2-3 zone defense befuddled Liberty

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Liberty’s offense is predicated on continual motion, hard screening and crisp passing.

When those break down, you get what you had during the first 38 minutes of Tuesday night’s game at High Point: Ten seconds left on the shot clock and the Flames running predictable isolation plays for the point guard or for Seth Curry.

For the most part, it didn’t work. That’s why Liberty, which entered the game averaging 75.7 points per game, was stuck at 47 with less than two minutes to play.

The Flames’ miracle finish — a 14-0 run over the final 1:43 to steal a victory — masked Liberty’s struggles to counteract High Point’s 2-3 zone defense, which for much of the game befuddled the Flames.

“We were just identifying shooters and trying to work over their screens,” High Point coach Bart Lundy said. “It was trying to identify personnel more than anything.”
