We aren't trying to hurt the other team's fans.

We get into players and coaches heads.

And we do a darn good job. ESPN agrees. Called us the "most rabid fans" in the BSC.
And Dicky V called us one of most intimidating crowds in the nation once, it's all semantics.

He was saying that the coaches/players/opposing fans would do that stuff to us...not that we were flipping fingers or throwing stuff at people...

That's what the players did to us, not what we did to the players.

See thats the thing I havent heard anyone say "What we have at LU has never existed in the Big South." We arent doing anything new under the sun but its something LU hasnt seen in a decent while plus we actually do have something never done at LU, the LUnatics. The support from the uppers at LU I would believe is new and regardless it is new for us current students at LU. 2 years ago we had a 1-10 football team and a 7-23 team in basketball. For us here its something we are proud of because alot of us here (Jonnies friends) have had a part in creating the atmosphere we have. Its not where we want it to be but were getting there

My bad, I am tired...

I sip the LUnatic KoolAid...

Oh, and I have been cussed at, and a High Point fan asked if I wanted to fight, so I am getting there. :P

Let me give you guys an example.

One example...there are many more....when you can heckle a guy for who is mom is dating you have quite an advantage :)

Keep up the good work though, but again, it's not something that hasn't been done before

I will say that I haven't seen the LU fan support like this since the Meyer days...so hats off to whatever you guys are doing.

Here's the thing you all are overlooking: He was talking about right now. He's not talking about in championship games or homecoming games. He's talking random Saturday night games against random teams. In that case, Winthrop can't tough us in student support.

I've had water thrown on me, spit upon by a player, gum thrown at me, coaches give me a finger
Name the school(s), Realist. Are we talking BSC, or out of conference?

Still talking attendance, we all heard the number multiple times last night--6,566--but here's something you may not have known that was in Lang's article in the local fishwrap this morning: it was the "largest crowd in three years." Also from the article, a great quote by UNCA's coach:
"We've played at South Carolina, at North Carolina and at Tennessee," Biedenbach said. "Liberty beat us worse than any of those folks."
And it sounds like Biedenbach got out-coached, as well:
After the loss at High Point on Wednesday, LU coach Ritchie McKay sensed his team was mentally and physically fatigued. So he gave them Thursday off and ran through a light workout Friday. The ploy allowed the Flames to face the conference's top team with fresher legs, a gesture the players appreciated.

"Defensively, we were real unselfish," McLean said. "We had each other's backs better than we have all year. We know this was a real turning point in our season. We just came out with a mindset to just lock down today"...

Smith, coming off the bench as punishment for missing a class this week, scored a team-high 18 points and hit 3 of 6 3-pointers.

If Super John and his "10 closest friends" have their way, don't count on it, Horrez.
You know, all of you are welcome to come on to our board and post things. I don't want you to feel like you have to take the quotes and post them here for you to comment on them.

Now, it is true. While I do hope that all of the sick start to feel better, I also hope they find something better to do than go see little ol' Winthrop play. I mean, without Gregg Marshall around is Winthrop even worth watching? I'm sure you guys can find something better to do that night. :D

I did not realize this was the first time UNCA had played since they beat Winthrop. Kenny George did not play in that game either. I didn't buy the idea that it was "sly old Eddie Biedenbach putting one over on Winthrop", even though they won, and I buy it even less after we put a beat down on them, dominating in the paint. There may not be any specific injury making him unable to play, but they are obviously not holding him out because they are a better team without him. My guess is he has one or more medical issues, and as long as they have the #1 seed he will sit out til either he is deemed 100%, or til the tournament. It's pure speculation, but it makes more sense than what I am hearing.

Very impressed by our play and coaching. As for the crowd, the amount of townies to show up was amazing, but we can't expect them to be loud. Getting them in the Vines is the first step, now we just need to have that repeated. I was dissapointed by the student section as well, but whatever. There were times when I could sense the baptist side starting to get into it but just needed some extra "pushing" from the students, and I'd look over there and ya'll are silent. I was thinking to myself, here we are dominating the unbeaten conference leader and our students are just standing/sitting there. I'm not blaming anyone in particular, just dissapointed. Oh well.

By the way, anyone know the recruit Rocco was with? He was definitely a big guy, but I don't know if it's someone who already signed or a potential recruit for next year. I'm assuming the latter.

(Doing my best BJ or Fumble impersonation)...It looked like Toman had a recruit with him, too. JB made a point to come over and talk with him and his parents for a big part of the second half.

Watched the game to its completion on TV. First this year I have watched a whole game since I don't have MASN.

Anyway here are my thoughts:

TeeJay was the best player on the floor tonight. He was truly amazing. Again, I am so impressed with Rell Porter this year. Great defense from Rell and he continues to knock down clutch shots. Anderson can shoot but needs to work on his defense.

The Crowd: Best I've seen in a long time. It looked full so I am guessing over 7k were in attendance. I know its been mentioned but since I said this over and over again when I watched the game I will mention it. The 20-30 UNCA fans were more involved in the game than ours were. At times they were louder. I heard a couple cheers from our student section and I know some of you were sick and no offense to SJ and the LUnatics but if the rest of the students have to be told to cheer from two or three guys that is sad. Even after a big play the crowd sounded like the rustling of leaves. I don't know, maybe they ate too much supper.

6,566 in attendance.

mostly to see KG play, and that didn't happen.

but it was still a huge crowd, hopefully we can get close to that on tuesday

Yeah. Assuming 6.6k is an accurate number. It looked full.

Nice win by Liberty.

I know for the Winthrop game they felt like he was starting to get a bit run down. Remember, this is his first full season of basketball since High School (and he's a red-shirt Junior...so he had two years of sitting, and then played a bit the end of last year). So, in reality this is his first season of practice and games since his senior year in High School (2003/04) and if you don't think daily practice plus games wears you down, especially I guy that big who has struggled just to stay healthy for the last 3 years. He may have tweaked something, his knees obviously aren't great and he's been injured before but I don't think its anything major. I think Eddie is looking at the schedule and realizing he'd rather have a fully rest Kenny come the end of February -- and then he can just keep playing him. Another thing, with a decent lead in the BSC why not rest him for a week or so now? Lets just say (theoretically) you play him, lock up the #1 seed and then you give him the last 2 games off ... now he goes into the tourny cold, no rhythm etc.

Again, he may have tweaked something or be a little dinged -- but I think the official explanation by Eddie (we want to keep him healthy and able to play 20 min a game down the stretch) is the honest and true one. I guess we shall see.

You people whining and complaining about the students is by-far the most annoying thing I've ever read on here, especially if you live anywhere within two hours and weren't there last night. Chances are, if you're one of the ones complaining, you never join in on the stuff we do anyways and you sat on your hands most of the night anyways. We have said all year that the goal is to get the kids to the games. Once we get em coming to the games, we'll worry about getting them involved then. You guys can't be pleased. You can't be happy that there was 3000-4000 students there last night when last year we were lucky to get 1000. You guys want everything changed overnight and there's no way that happens. Stop whining and moaning about crowd support and do something to get it going better. Get your side of the stadium to do something for once and maybe the students will see they're getting shown up and start doing more. Don't just whine about things, do something about them.

GREAT WIN! I actually got to see the entire game- and, more importantly- did not jinx the team by watching.

some thoughts:

1. This team kills me sometimes. I tune in as we go up by 2, then 7, then its 14-1. Next thing I know, its 21-19 and I'm ready to throw up. We are so inconsistent on offense sometimes I want to scream.

2. When we can't get penetration, we turn very one-dimensional on "O" and start chucking up garbage- most of which are complete bricks which we have no shot at rebounding. That's how our big leads disappear within 3 minutes. (that is a very non-hoops savvy assessment, just what I think I see)

3. Our offensive boards in the 1st half looked weak.

4. Ritchie REALLY makes nice coaching adjustments . When the guys execute changes, like they did last night- this team comes out on fire and plays WAY over their heads. Great to see.

5. Still wondering how we lost to RadfUrd.

6. Was that QUARLES with the dunk in the last .06? OH MY!!!

7. GREAT WIN!!!!

Watched the entire game on MASN, was planning on coming to the game, but sickness has hit our humble home as well. One thing I noticed, you could hear the crowd much better on the radio that you could on TV, might be the microphones, ect.

Great crowd. Don't care if they didn't say a word, good to see Vines full again. SJ you are right, those of us who don't show up, or do and don't cheer have no room to criticize anything or anyone. You guys keep up the good work.

BTW, I am not sure the crowd was there to see KG, I think the fact that we are playing well and winning has a lot to do with it.

I disagree, I was standing up by the entrance for a while during pre-game warmups and everyone coming in was just standing and staring at KG. Plus, we have to factor in there was a women's game before and the breast cancer event. Also those goofy characters (forget their names) which some people (LUconn) came just to see them.

I hope I'm wrong, but I have a feeling it's going to be back to mainly students on Tuesday night. The other two home games are Radford and VMI which generally brings people out who don't normally come.

All I can say SJ is enjoy it while it lasts, once you graduate, you have about a one year window where it's still ok to heckle and do all the student craziness stuff, after that, you start to feel too old to do it and then complain how the new generation can't do it as well as you used to :)
