SCAR wrote:RedDog, you had to bring up bad memories  Blue only finished with 22 because after a few dunks coach Meyer put me on him and told me to deny him full court which I did but it was way too late. We played them close but He really electrified the crowd. The dunk he got from the foul line was over D-Train (Derrick Williams). I remember the play so well because D-Train threw an inbounds pass over my head. He was under our bucket and I was at the top of the Key but D-Train knew he threw it away and was on a dead sprint to try to break up the dunk. He actually ran past me just in time to get in the poster as Blue jumped from the foul line (I am not kidding or exaggerating). The remember seeing a picture of the D-Train, foul line dunk in their media guide. I did get dunked on by ETSU (yes they got me first which is why I had to get them back). Calvin Talford kicked me in the head catching an alley oop. He had a nice one over Brett Badget at our place the night of the infamous event as well.... I will say that Gabe Martin has had some of the nastiest missed dunks ever too. You know when you miss but everyone still talks about the dunk, that it was special (although coach D would have loved to get the 2 points).
Was it Les Robinson who coached them? He went to NC State to replace Jim Valvano. Also starring Greg Dennis and Major Jennings.

POP QUIZ: One of the referees of that game against ETSU was an official the 2006 Final Four. Who was he?

HINT: It wasn't Duke Edsil....

I think it would be interesting to see those former flames on here to reminisce and contribute to the discussion to get the view of what it was like for them, and to see their comments on current flames action.

We actually had a bunch of the old hags posting on here this past season. I suspect once word starts spreading we'll more of them.

He is not too old of a hag but Sly will like it. Houston's own Phillip Ward has gotten an invite to come reminsce about the old days. This thread would be good for him to start. He is a big dunker but I don't know if he racked up that many in a Liberty Uniform....-e- it was Todd Cline that Blue Edwards dunked on with a co-signing by D-Train! It was pretty nasty. Blue finished with 22 but he had 16 at half time before coach Meyer put me on him and we played a box and one. I was so worn out from holding him and hacking him because I was not gonna let him get the ball if i could help it. Once he took off, it was over. I don't think I could play defense the way they call the game today because I would foul out in 5 minutes. Though I would be tough to guard too because driving to the basket that much I would live at the foul line. I wish they would let the defender play some like they do in the Big East and Big Ten during conference games.....Yes that was Les Robinson who coached ETSU back then and he did go to Raleigh shortly after. They also had Marty Story and Major Geer who got posterized by a certain point guard from Liberty

No problem. I also forgot to mention AJ English from Virginia Union who went on to play for the Washington Bullets. His backup was Vincent Price (not the actor) and he was just as good as AJ. Same type of player, 6-6, long, jump out of the gym. Price had a lot of personal problems though and never got to the next level. He was from Lynchburg and he eventually transferred into Liberty to get close to home but he never played a second. He was the only guy that made Bailey look like a mortal in practice though. Price's brother was gunned down at the club called the Rainbow that used to sit behind the school where Chick Fil-A is now. Us brotha's used to sneak off the back of campus after midnight and head to that place. I must admit I was never a drinker or big clubber or anything but going to the Rainbow was crazy....Anyway, Price dunked on me pretty bad too. It was a breakaway but the guy missed the layup and I came behind him to grab the rebound. I didn't know Price was behind me and he took the ball out of my hands and jumped over my back and dunked it with 2 hands all in 1 motion! When he transfered in to Liberty people used to say, "oh yeah I remember you, you are the guy that dunked on Scarborough! VA Union was so good they were signing autographs outside of OUR LOCKERROOM!!!!....AJ English was shooting 3 pointers from the bench. His coach and he were talking and the coach said "shoot it" so he did and made it. He was telling me I couldn't guard him because I was too little. Then he would shoot it from way back there. The one time I finally came out that far to guard him he went back door for an alley oop. Thank God Eric Cunningham was there to foul him or that would have been another poster I was on. Believe me though gentleman I have posterized enough guys that it doesn't bother me to talk about this (anymore since therapy that is  ).

While reading this I was wondering if you were going to bring up Vincent. That cat was special. I've never played against anyone more athletic, a couple of guys maybe equally, but no one more so. He did give Bailey some fits. The scout team actually won a few with Vince. Was he only 6'6"? I thought he was taller. Maybe 6'8". He was taller than D Train. Long too. Real long.

Another smash mouth dunker that never played was that 6'6" Jamaican, Dan Pratt. I can't think of his name right now. Ofcourse dunking was about the limit of his range. He and Juice used to run up and down the court trying to dunk it as hard as they could for hours. Like two little kids. They were fun to watch. Since we're on dunkers do you remember when Julius gashed open his forhead when he hit it on the rim? And I think that was a week after he smashed a backboard. Energy. Pure energy.

Richard Shelton was another one of those half time dunkers. He threw down a nice 360 alley oop. That dude could fly. 46" vert.

In all the dunks I've ever seen, in person on on TV, the Blue Edwards dunk over Derrick is in the top five of all time. You just don't take off from the free throw line, jump over a 6'6" guy and crunch the rim. Remember, he hammered that dunk...no reaching. The others were powerful, but that one was remarkable.

It's between Blue Edwards and Calvin Talford at ETSU for kicking me in the head on an alley oop. Actually Vincent Price's dunk over me was nice too....Danny Pratt actually coached a recent Liberty grad that folks on this board know as Leo Lightbourne when he was in the Bahamas. Leo was a juco transfer but Pratt had him in high school....I do remember Juice hitting his head on the rim and I remember him breaking that backboard too. Juice probably should be mentioned in this thread too because he had some nasty game dunks. Aluma had one his JR year on a delivery from Marcus White that shook the roof of the Vines for about 10 minutes because the fans couldn't stop cheering. It was against UNCG. Too bad we won that night but lost to them 2 weeks later in the Big South Championship.

Pratt as mentioned before was from the Bahamas and coached Leo Lightbourne in high school. He had some vicious dunks. He seemed to be trying to rip the rim out of the backboard. He could jump. Leo Lightbourne had a nasty dunk vs HPU that I will remember for a while because Woodson left him a dime in mid air near the free throw line and sort of just ran away from the ball and took the defenders with him. Well Leo was trailing and he comes in and takes off with both feet and dunks it with 2 hands....Gabe Martin was the nastiest game dunker I have seen in a while though. He got Phillip Williams of Winthrop and Ashley Champion of Tenn Chattanooga his Sr. year. Woodson to Martin was a nice combination in the dunking dept.

Scar, I played against Calvin Talford as recently as 2 summers ago in a summer league when I lived in Bristol, TN. The dude is still nasty although he didn't bang on anyone, he could if he wanted to. He gets major buckets!!!! One of the top 4 to ever play at ETSU!

Calvin Talford. How did his baseball career go guest? I am glad to hear people my age can still get it done in a competitive environment. I have unofficially retired myself. I don't even have a desire to play anymore. I am in LaHaye all the time and it doesn't even occur to me to try to play anymore. Maybe I'll get it back but who knows. Thanks for the info Guest.

I don't think anyone mentioned Gabe's dunk against Tennessee-Chattanooga - it was nice... and if we're talking "Dunk-ons" then I will bring up Devon Smith (I think that was his name) from UVA. This dunk not only landed him on SC's top 10 that evening but Freddie Williams (who was the posteree) broke his wrist trying to take the charge. Nasty. That was one of those dunks where our bench was scolded by RD for ooohhing and ahhhing.

I got dunked on by Anthony Richardson of Flordia State lore in a high-school summer camp. If it wasn't a HS game, it would have been on Sports Center.

I still have nightmares.

Does that count?

Since we're going back to high school days... Jackie Manuel of UNC jumped OVER me to do an amazing dunk a few years back.

Needless to say, I got ridiculed for months.

i have this image in my head of aluma stealing the ball just before mid-court and going coast to coast in 96. as for top all around dunkers:
1. boo graham (i thought he was nasty, his game that is)
2. chapman (based on reputation, i never saw him for an extended period of time)
3. aluma
4. jason dixon (based on sheer volumn)
5. phillip ward (he should have dominated that conference)

Aluma's dunk on JMU over traffic in the lane was as powerful with contact. Gabe's in the Radford game at home was "fan"tastic.

I like your thinking 47 / 5-2 ... you definitely old school and have clearly better knowledge then these new school cats on the board.

I remember Aluma's dunk after the steal from half court, very nasty, also Marcus White delieveered a couple of dimes to Aluma for way to many to remember...

Thats histerical Brokeback. I actually don't drink coffee but donuts are about the only thing I can dunk these days. I said that I would be able to dunk when I was 50. I didn't even make it to 40 although with some training I may be able to get that verticle back someday but who has time or energy for training? Not me thats for sure.

Krispy Kreme of course! They have one here in Richmond and when I was at Anthem earlier this year I worked accross the street from one! I thought I was gonna have to buy some new suits after working there for a month but I grew tired of them and then my contract ended so I was saved!
