This is how it needs to be. Brew should take the most shots on the team or at least as many as Blair. He is a better offensive threat than Blair, with a much higher fg percentage. Blair needs to get to the foul line. I've been saying this all year and he did it tonight, 9-9.

10-15 shots is a good range for Blair.

On Winning Despite Larry's Foul Trouble:
When arguably your best player is on the bench with fouls it shows maturity for the other guys to step up. And we did that and then some.

On Rell Porter's big night:
Rell is just so valuable to this program. Tonight he was able to go and score over Arizona Reid. Thats when you can start talking about him being a real factor in Big South games.

On Boisterous Crowd in Vines Center:
It was fun to be back in here again after really a 2-year absence. Now e have to focus on Tuesday. I told them to enjoy this one, but by tomorrow at four we have to focus on Winthrop. Here it comes so hopefully we can be more efficient and have different results down in Rock Hill.

On Big South Race:
Anything above .500 would be tremendous. The reason this win is so big we have the tiebreaker with CCU. This one was big for us.

On the 63 Points in the Second Half:
That's a lot of points and it wasn't VMI we were playing. We shoot 59% and we outrebound them. All of those ratios were great and everybody contributed. We had to make some adjustments with Justin being injured and we really stepped up. Give the kids a lot of credit. Its been a season of some mountaintop experiences and this was definitely one of them.

On Dwight Brewington's Emergence:
He's getting more and more comfortable. Him hitting that three was big for his confidence. After sitting out that long it takes awhile to get into your game. Whether your facing a Randy Johnson fastball or playing here tonight. He's really comign around for us.

Terrible refs tonight. Well, it was really one in particular that seemed to be on the wrong side of every call. I've never seen a team flop that much this side of Durham. Old Bart must have them in some Drama classes. Sack up and take a charge like a man, Panthers. On the other hand, Bart had a good reason to get that T. What a terrible call. Our guy was no where near established. AZ could get away with whatever he wanted as well. Partly because we had Baker gaurding him for a while. (he got abused but, hey, he's young) But that guy uses his elbow on offense pretty effectively.

Other than that, hooray us. We can take away a lot of positives from this. Hopefully we'll work on our End-Game strategy this week. We were not playing smart the last 3 minutes.

Nice to have had a better crowd tonight If the team continues like this, the students will come. The biggest change I have seen is that RD appears to have loosened the reigns, and the players have responded. To that, I say, "Well done, coach." One mark of a good coach is one who will adjust his style when it ain't working--and RD did just that. Just because I say that does not mean that I will go back to slurping the Kool-Aid. And yes, the HP coach is a blooming idiot. He is funny to watch--even funnier than watching Marshall turn purple.

Brewington and Blair Run The Flames To Victory Over High Point, 96-79

Brewington scores 28 points in victory over High Point

The Liberty Flames (11-12, 5-4 BSC) won their fourth-straight game behind twenty-point games from Dwight Brewington and Larry Blair as they defeat conference second place High Point Panthers (16-8, 7-2 BSC) on Saturday night at the Vines Center, 96-79.

The contest started out neck and neck as the Flames held a slight 8-5 advantage to open the game when Alex McLean grabbed a Damien Hubbard miss and put it back in at the 17:08 mark.

The Panthers then held a slight 10-6 advantage over the next six minutes capped by a Cruz Daniels hook shot at the 11:12 mark, giving High Point the narrow 15-14 lead.
The Flames immediately went on a 12-4 run capped by a B.J. Jenkins three-point basket with 8:15 remaining in the opening half, giving Liberty the 26-19 lead.

By time the clock reached under the four minute media time out, the Panthers had gone off on an 11-2 run to take the 30-28 lead on an Arizona Reid basket with 4:00 left in the half.

The Flames bounced back by scoring five out of the next seven points to close out the half and take a 33-32 lead into the break on the back of Dwight Brewington making the second of his two free throw attempts with 27.9 seconds remaining.

Both the Flames and Panthers were almost identical from the floor as High Point hit on 48.4 of their shots on 15-of-31 shooting while Liberty hit on 48.1 percent of its shots on 13-of-27 shooting after shooting over 50 percent for much of the half.

Reid scored a game-high 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting in the first half while Jerald Minnis was High Point’s next leading scorer with six points in the opening period.

Brewington led the Flames in first half, scoring eight points while Jenkins and Rell Porter each put in six points to pace the Flames. Larry Blair scored two early points but spent the majority of the half on the bench in foul trouble with two.

The Flames pushed their lead to 10 points as they held a 24-15 advantage to start the half which was capped by back-to-back Brewington baskets, giving Liberty the 57-47 lead. After a Brewington basket made it an eight-point lead, Porter striped Mike Jefferson then passed it to Brewington got the transition basket.

After Reid put a basket in to finish off a 6-3 High Point run, Blair came right down hitting a three-point basket with 7:45 remaining in the game to extend the lead back to ten at 63-53.

Liberty stretched its lead to 90-75 on the back of a 25-20 advantage capped by Blair making his two free throw attempts with 1:12 remaining in the game. Included in those six minutes was a 13-0 run that included a Brewington basket, then two free throws by Blair after a technical foul was called on High Point’s Bart Lundy then capped by another Brewington basket.

The Flames closed out the game when Alex McLean hit both free throw attempts after Reid committed his fifth foul with 37.4 seconds remaining, capping a 6-4 Liberty run to seal the victory.

The Flames were hot in the second half from the field, hitting on 67.6 percent of their shots on 23-of-34 shooting.

The Flames nearly shot 60 percent for the third-straight game as they hit 59.0 percent of their shots on 36-of-61 shooting behind Brewington’s team-high 28 points on 12-of-18 shooting. Brewington added seven rebounds dished four assists and had too big blocks on Reid late in the game.

Blair passed Doug Day of Radford for second place all-time on the Big South scoring list as he scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half on 5-of-10 shooting. McLean added his tenth double-double of the season as he grabbed 10 boards and scored 16 points. It was the second time this season McLean registered a double-double against High Point. McLean scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds at High Point on Jan. 17. Porter added nine big points to go with his six rebounds, four assists and three steals while Jenkins chipped in 12 points, four assists and two steals in the win.

Reid led all scorers with 32 points on 12-of-20 shooting, including 4of-5 from three point range to go with 10 rebounds before fouling out in the game’s final minute.
Landon Quick added 15 points and four assists on 6-of-9 shooting while Troy Bowen and Mike Jefferson added 10 points each in the loss.

After hot shooting in the first half, the Panthers cooled off in the second, shooting 38.2 percent on 13-of-34 shooting to finish the game at 43.1 percent shooting.

High Point returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Savannah State for its sixth road game in their last seven games. Tip time is set for 7 p.m.

The Flames travel to Rock Hill, S.C., on Tuesday to take on first place Winthrop. Tip is slated for 7 p.m.

Some kid had a sign that said "Start Dwight Brewington." Personally, I like him on the bench and giving us a spark. I'd change the sign to "Start BJ." Damien Hubbard's line was horrible tonight.

I know Medic posted the picture of the LB>AZ sign, but we also had an ace for Alex, and we had a white board that we kept up with #4's stats (he was 0-4 in the first half, ended at 0-10).

The students did good. I was glad they showed up like they did.

HPU didn't have 400 there. At least it didn't look at it. From where I was sitting (standing) I may not have had the best view.

AZ Reid is just flat good. There's no other way around it.

HPU will lose at least two more games the rest of the year. They just rely on Reid too much.

Coach got fired up a couple times and told the crowd to get up and get louder.

Sly, anyone that was there will tell you that there were at least 4000 people there. How they take attendance is something that I don't know. Maybe it was just 3300+ paying, but the place was AT LEAST 50% full and it officially seats 8400.
