Good to see the guys find a way to win regardless of opponent. 7 players with 20 minutes or more. Homesley at 14 minutes even with AC in foul trouble. Maxwell with 15 points, 10 rebounds in only 21 minutes, only 2 fouls. We are going to need him out there more. Maybe not tomorrow with Summit's tallest guy at 6-5. Back at it tomorrow.

On a side note, William & Mary with a big road win at NC State. Very impressive.

Here's the article from the local paper: http://www.newsadvance.com/sports/liber ... 3b38b.html

On a side note (that may only be of interest to Purple), by 6:55, 5 minutes before tipoff, the concessions stand was already sold out of the Flames burger.

That's unacceptable. I am not a fan of the Flames Burger but still at this level you need to have product. I guess I can give them a partial pass since more people showed up last night than any 3 game combined last year

Hopefully they were able to sign some folks for next year during the Early Signing Period!

Covenant was a D3 school that finished 9-17 overall last year, was picked to finish 10th out of 11 in a truly horrible USA South Conference, and they lost their leading scorer to graduation to boot. Saying it's going to be a long year is an understatement if this is the type of product Liberty will be putting on the court.

Yeah I agree with Lynchburgwildcat. On the worst day of the year it seems Liberty should be able to dominate a mediocre division III team. We aren't talking about a DIII powerhouse. We all know it is going to be a long year for the Flames and this game last night is telling of how far the program has dropped.

I hope they can continue to get better as the season goes on and be competitive.

Covenant wishes they were as good as mediocre.

I'm sure they were a bit amped up for this game but either way it speaks volumes of the talent level of this team. It'll be a long year without a doubt.

I am not going to sugar coat how badly we played last night to only beat Covenant by 2 points, but at the same time I think it´s too early to proclaim the entire season an inevitable train wreck based on one game, no matter how horrible the performance. Let´s see how tonight goes.

Yeah, no need to jump off the ship yet. But I watched Georgia State play a Division III on Monday and it was 26-0 in the 1st 10 minutes. I know State is really good but that is more on par with the experience of a DIII team coming into a DI environment.

I'm not jumping off the cliff because I had low expectations. I do feel like the level of coaching is better and the team will play hard. I'm excited to watch this program grow under McKay.

I would be willing to bet that we've practiced very little on offense so far this preseason. We've likely focused on defense mostly. That showed when you watched because we didn't have much offensive flow and guys weren't used to playing with each other.

As long as we show continued success game to game this season, I'll consider this year successful. We know we're not playing for anything more than growth.

Plus, two players lost minutes because they were taken out for stitches after collisions, and a third player was in serious foul trouble and eventually fouled out.

Yeah. Not sure it's a 'cliff' so much as it is an 'out cropping'. You don't have too far to fall if you don't have high expectations

To put maybe a slightly positive spin on it, I think if the team's attitude and leadership was the same as last year's we lose that game last night. also, a tip of the cap to a freshman hitting 2 FT at crunch time.

I kind of expected what happened last night. We all know it's going to be awhile before we can be good again. Let's just cheer them on.

Evan Maxwell played a good game, I look for him to end up being a double-double guy throughout his career. Look forward to see how he becomes a central figure in this offense. He has the talent to be a dominant force in the paint.

Two pet peeves of mine as a basketball coach regardless of who you play and I know its the same for Coach McKay:
1. MAKE YOUR FREE-THROWS!!!!! Less than 70% for a team in college is inexcusable!

2. 16 turnovers against anyone is to many, but against a D3 school is even more head-scratching. With that said, I know it is the first game of the season and we are a young team. I do not doubt that the second half of the season our turnovers will be on average less than that of the 1st half of the season.

Evan was certainly productive against Covenant, but let´s put it in perspective. He had 4 inches and 40 pounds on their biggest guy. If he can come close to those numbers against D1 centers, I will be impressed. IMHO the fact that he was actually able to PLAY 21 minutes showed me he has really been working hard on his stamina. Last year he got totally gassed and became a foul machine after 2 or 3 minutes on the court.
