61-55 Flames win! Good finish! Gielo with a career high 23 points and 10 rebounds.

Moller looks to be a good backup to Retic at the point, doesn't appear to be a scorer. Smith's play improved in the second half. The team played better with James Johnson in.

You have been saying Layer counts against our scholarship total for 2 years Purple, and it's just wrong. He does not and never has.

Looks to be a typical Layer team, they play hard on defense and are lost on offense the difference is this team clearly has better chemistry than the last year's team. They won't be world changers but with the soft schedule they should do alright and probably finish the season 4 or 5th in the Big South. Those are my quick take aways from just one game that i have seen. They are better than I thought they would be but they also were playing a very inexperienced Delaware team.

Unless they've changed the rules he does. LU money (father is a coach) LCA money. Otherwise we could use LCA as a 'prep' school for Liberty and get the tuition break. I know the NCAA has been snooping around for that the last few years.

The rule regarding non-athletic scholarships focuses on whether any student at the school who is not an athlete would receive the same benefit. As I understand it, Ethan's tuition is paid because he is the child of an LU employee. All children of faculty and staff get the same benefit, therefore it is within the rules. We actually have a scholarship we are not using this year, but if you look at last years roster you will see there are clearly a full compliment of 13 scholarship players plus Layer and Pekas, who were walkons. This year it is 12, plus Layer and Hoffman.

Pretty good effort tonight. I absolutely loathe Layer's offense and have since he's arrived. I don't have a clue as to what we're running. We seem to start our offense a step inside half court to where we set 47 screens and the ball never gets below the free throw line. It's maddening.

I think we're going to enjoy this team based upon their defensive efforts, though.

Don't understand why Ethan Layer is still playing for this team in anything other then garbage time.

Joe Smith from South Ackalacka High would not be eligible to receive the same benefit because his parents neither teach at LU nor did he attend LCA.
Needless to say it's a rather sticky wicket (Sport History peeps?) and not Germaine to anything. He shouldn't be playing at this level. But playing for your dad can be neat, so they get a pass.

JK would probably have the most up to date info on that as mine ended 2 years ago

The offense is fine. We had several balls roll off the rim after penetration. It's a patient offense that waits for the D to collapse or breakdown with motion and/or to get the best shot possible. We went through two stretches where we couldn't make a basket that let UD get back in the game. If we had greater accuracy on our shots there would not be a complaint about the offense. 38% is not great but again we had a half dozen shots roll off the rime and missed 2 dunks.

Nonetheless this team showed character and grit. This is a great confidence booster moving forward. Getting Moeller going will be huge to take the pressure off Retic and Gielo.

Yes, I'm sure JK37 is up on that rule, as are DL and his staff Purple. If Ethan's free tuition benefit counted as a scholarship, we would have been over the limit the last 3 years prior to this one. I feel pretty confident we were not.

This has always been my understanding.

For Division I football and basketball prospects, this change has little impact. NCAA rules prohibit recruited walk-ons from receiving almost all forms of institutional financial aid. Merit-based, need-based, it doesn’t matter. Athletes in the revenue sports must either earn a (typically full) scholarship or pay their own way through school.

Great game tonight, the offense couldn't buy a bucket for a little while in the second half but other than that looked okay. James Johnson is going to be a big time player for this team and as we knew going in Smith, Gielo and Retic will too. UD has definitely taken a talent hit with Saddler and Usher both graduating but Coach Ross is still a great coach.

Missed the game tonight. What was it like watching an LU mens game without Scar providing the analysis? It just seems weird to even be asking.

Nice win for y'all tonight, nice win for us (after giving the Corndogs a tussle Saturday) at C of C, and Winthrop goes into Littlejohn and beats the Taters.

Add in UNCA going to ECU and winning after nearly winning at Wake, Coastal going out to Pauley and playing well in a loss, and the aforementioned CSU win at Old tick, and the conference is off to a nice start.

SCAR is great, and Clement did a good job last night, especially for a newbie. For the ff community it won't be the same no matter how good Townsend gets as he learns the team and develops a rapport with Nick. SCAR is one of us, and with the the decision to go with inhouse talent and the attitude the school seems to have about staff and ff, I would say it's highly unlikely we will ever see anyone in a major broadcast role as a regular contributor here again.

I know it goes against pretty much everything this board has stood for, but after this football season, and now the start the conference is having in basketball can we start to say that maybe the Big South is no longer a TOTAL dumpster fire of a conference?

The offense looked good for a couple minutes, then they looked lost for next 2 minutes. it was this way thru out game. Rebounding was not good on defensive boards. Delaware had 23 offensive I believe.
LU is about 2 athletic players away I think. The bigger/faster teams will give us trouble especially if they run on us. I don't think LU could run if building were on fire.
