You would also think that with as many close games as we've had we could figure out how to win them

I like the line up Liberty22 but at this point I would almost start Roberts over Marshall.

Has Roberts even seen the floor for more then 2 minutes since Christmas? January? He's a borderline D1 talent on his BEST day. I can see the rationale behind starting Sanders, don't agree with it but can see it. Start Roberts? You might as well put Layer and Donley in there for your 3 guard line up :D

at least they had some fight tonight. Marshall and Sanders both make decisions that seniors should not make but even with that they should've won the game. Free throws...geez.

Off topic but Longwood took Campbell to the woodshed. Yikes! 46-13 at half! Won by 23.

As for the team, the regular season is winding down, and one more loss would make 20. We have the entire league right where we want them...

The LU fan base has had to embrace losing..."at least they had some fight tonight"....tune in post game after watching another home BSC to hear radio announcer say, "team has got to feel good about the way they played tonight". With the Longwood win at Campbell, flames are now 11th in BSC. Hard to justify middle of the pack with LU resources but the basement is hard to believe.

How about this is disappointing and now we see if the team can keep battling to put together some conference WINS! Highlight some positives but no one can feel good when BSC teams come into the Vines and leave with victories.

1- Retic
2- Marshall
3- Sanders
4- Tomaz
5- Smith

6- Burrus
7- Roberts
8 or 9- depending on teams you play, Joel or JR

That first 5 I mentioned would be a explosive offensive hard to guard team... Bring a shooter in like Roberts, scoring in Burrus off the bench.

Looks like Free throws lost this game, is free throws a offense or defense problem?? Just wondering. Defense looked good holding VMI 13 points under their average.

A few reflections from the game:

There may have been more VMI fans there than LU fans. If it wasn't, it was close.

Retic and Marshall should be the starting guards remainder of season.

LU substitutes too much. There is no need to substitute on every dead ball/stoppage of play.

The LU administration needs to do something to encourage more students to attend games. Student attendance was beyond pitiful. I read where at radford a couple night ago, 1500 students walked thru the snow down to the Dedmon Center for a game. If RU can do it, then LU should also.

VMI has type of players that LU should recruit. i.e. shooters.

What do you want them to do? They give away something or have some kind of freak show at halftime, every game. WINNING will put butts in the seats without any promotions.
We need to recruit better players and if things don't get better quick, make some coaching changes. Frankly, we probably need a coaching change now, but Layer is such a great guy and runs a super clean program, it may earn him another year, with what appears to be his best incoming class.

Have you been to Radford? There's nothing else to do in that little town. Plus, maybe the 1500 students weren't there for basketball at all. Have you seen their "dance team" perform at halftime?

I was there as well. While vmi fans were loud, there were no where near as many as liberty fans.

We have recruited shooters - Marshall, Sanders, Donley, Roberts, Layer. Their shooters are just better.

Can't remember who it was but either Marshall or Retic I think took a running three from way downtown with over 10 seconds left down 3.. really low percentage, almost as if they thought they had to get a shot off.. things like this are why we have no chance at the end of tight games.

Down 3, with 10 seconds left, you need to "look for the 3", but make sure it's a good shot.

Normally in 1 possession games with seconds to go, Sanders just ducks his head and drives to the basket, hoping for a layup or draw a foul. Actually this cost LU against VMI when his shot was blocked because the VMI defense knew what he was going to do.

What you do there is drive to the frontcourt, call a timeout (if available) then draw up a play with four shooters on the floor: Sanders, Marshall, Layer and Gielo (remember he does have that range) and then run a clearout for Retic to have a drive and/or kickout with Davon first option, JC second, Tomasz third and Ethan last resort

It was Marshall. I didn't think it was a bad shot at the time, he was open. But he hesitated and made it into a very tough shot.
