We are a sloppy team. We played so well the first half and then it's like we came out in the 2nd half and the universe righted itself...

certainly doesn't seem like LU is capable of sustaining a level of play required to gain victory. Maybe the BSC competition is a step down.

Dissappointing showing yet again. JB is in a real tough spot here if this season keeps going like it is. A .500 record with a senior laden group at this point in Layer's tenure would/is def. a dissappointment in my opinion. Then on the other hand he has the best recruiting class we've had in a long long time lined up with LOI's already in plus another additional recruit. If you keep him your committed to keeping him for atleast 2 years to see what that group can do together. I really hope they get it together and make a good run because I don't think this ends well for us if we don't.

That's a 600k+ 'IF'. Recruits aren't always what they appear to be. We've whiffed on a few and I'm not sure this is the best recruiting class ever.
One thing that I ponder, is that if Burrus is such a valuable piece of this scheme, and no doubt he is, and he's been injury prone, which he has, why have we not recruited a similar body type/style of player to replace him? He's eventually going to graduate and there should be someone in the system already to replace him in his role. With all of his injuries there should be 2 players in the wings to replace him. And glad to see his playing time will depend on the word of a chiropractor  I have nothing against chiropractors, but I'm not sure that's who I'd turn to in order to judge fitness to play.
None of which answers the trust and chemistry problems.

I just got back from the game. Very disappointed in what we have and our second half performance. I knew that with the big advantage we had in the first half with FG percentage (48% vs 20%) and rebounds and we only had an 8 point lead I knew we were in trouble since that wasn't likely to continue in the second half and I knew we should have had a bigger lead with that kind of advantage. All the things I have heard on this board with lack of athleticism, talent, and game plan, etc I can definately see where all the comments are coming from and saw it first hand. Burris looked good early than sat out the rest of the game. Marshall couldn't hit anything. Sanders and Gealo looked okay for the most part. It seems that we are very talent deficient and with an experienced team that doesn't bode well for the future.

Interesting. First time I have heard that little bit of information. We always just speculated.

I like Layer, but I am not sure if he is head coaching material. Oh well, what do I know?

I am really in Coach Layer's corner and hope he succeeds. There still is opportunity that good things will happen for this team. But if for some reason things don't work out after his contract runs out remember the name Chris Holtman.

Chris Holtman didn't leave a Big South head coaching job to be an assistant at a Big East school only to turn around and take another Big South coaching job.

Lang,

Holtman may take LU job for 300,000 especially if Butler struggles in the new conference. Depends on if McKay is available for Barber to hire him back or not - 'the return part 2' -- only school in history to hire 2 guys 2 separate times, I could see LU doing something like that.

Could you expound on this? The conventional wisdom was this was the last year of his contract. Did he get an extension after last season? If so that's roughly a million dollar commitment and Layer will be here for awhile.

That's right around what Layer makes now. Layer's base salary, per LU's 990 form from 2012 on file, is $295,766, which grows to $329,869 with other compensation. I think the LU job would become much more attractive to someone like Holtmann, a younger guy with big ambitions, if there's a change in conference affiliation. But how many coaches, outside of Gregg Marshall, have used a Big South job as a stepping stone to another, better head coaching gig? I can't remember off the top of my head, but I haven't been following the league as long as some of you guys have.

I asked Jeff during the Howard game what Layer's contract status was, and that's what he told me. Three years remaining after this one. Layer signed on for five years originally, so it seems like he was quietly extended over the summer after the tournament run. LU doesn't like to publicize this stuff. Could have happened when I was transitioning back from the VT beat.

This is why you are at the top of the Lynchburg sports scene right behind Dennis Carter :D

I have my doubts about the extension. Barber is savy enough to tell Lang, that so Lang doesnt make it an issue during the season...

I give the nod to DC, based solely on 30 years or so experience around here and his HOF status. But Lang is certainly right up there.

Wow 3 years after this year. I had misread your tweet a few weeks ago about that. All of this makes the heat toman gets seem absurd. I think chris is dead on. Conference changes a lot of things. With that contract we need him to get it together. Problem is that his track record looks just like his years here. Amazing that 3 wins gets an extension.

+1

I wish it hadn't taken DC so long to get on the LU bandwagon. Back when I was in town, his nightly shows were nothing but EC Glass and Heritage with some UVa & VT thrown into the mix.
