SCAR wrote:As for the Liberty situation, Meyer was not fired. He was given sort of an ultimatum that he needed to win the Big South championship as we had just lost the last 2 tournament finals. He felt that he couldn't do it with the core of his team being dismissed for disciplinary reasons so he resigned with pay and was given a position as Assistant to the Chancelor which was basically a job in name to keep him on salary. He used that time to find another position which he did as an assistant with Gregg Marshall at Winthrop where he won 3 straight Big South Championships before going to Butler and getting them to the Sweet 16.

So we got greedy. I think we all would habe been happy to have replicated his last four year stretch over the last decade and a half... Here is hoping Layer gets his chance and we recognize how good we have it when the time comes!
There was a little bit more too it, but the situation described by Scar is most of it. There is no reason to really dwell on it, but it is brought up here often. I wish Coach Meyer and Coach Layer nothing but the best in their future endeavors.

1997 LU lost Big South Championship their 2 nd straight in the Vines.

Pressure mounted in the off season as Dr. Borek was hired. --
He applied pressure to Meyer to either win the title in '98 or your finished!

In the meantime, the starting PG was removed for academics at LU, not NCAA. As a going away send off for this PG (ED GOMES) walked in the apartment and then 2 other future starters were given the Liberty Way boot. Over the next 2 months leading to the season, Meyer completated staying and coaching or doing waht he did resigning. obviously you know what happened there.

Later timelime for Meyer. -- He was an assistant at Butler, went to Sweet 16, etc. He didn't think Lickliter was ever going to leave, etc -- He gets a call from a mutual friend that knows Quin Snyder said Quin needed help and a clean image on staff, because Quin just fired Lane Odom & Tony Harvey for cheating (if you dont believe me just look it up) So Meyer was hired to replace the cheats at Mizzou... couldn't turn it around enough was only there 2 seasons, etc.

And that'ss your Paul Harvey story for the day -- Good day!

Yeah I forgot about my man Tony Harvey. He was at Eastern Michigan when they had Earl Boykins and Derrick Dial as their backcourt.

I don't know much about Meyer, but I do know that his daughter was a pretty hot teacher for me in 12th grade English in her first year teaching at Heritage HS!

After what Sampson did at OK State, I cannot believe IU hired him. He was a NCAA violation waiting to happen. IU got off very easy with NCAA. They should have been banned from NCAA tournament for years.

Sampson didnt do anything at OK State --- but he did do a lot at Oklahoma!

Also you know how he got the IU job.... -- Because he coached Eduardo Najera @ Oklahoma, he went on to play for the Dallas Mavericks, the owner of the Mavericks is Mark Cuban, billionaire and also IU graduate!!!

Anything else you fellows need to know??
