Stevev wrote:Actually I attended TTU back in the day and remember Monica Matthews. She was the best on the team that year but I didn't think that the team was that good. I remember the team's shorts were down to the knees and looked kind of goofy back then when all the teams they were playing wore really short shorts. Might have had something to do with the rules I don't know. Also remember Tommy McMasters playing. He was the 6th man if I remember correctly.
There was a time when even the men's BB team at TTU wore full length pants.

Olldflame, I was there '79-83, the years of Steve Dillon, James Ramsburg, and Anthony Eubanks (Ole Miss transfer), who would do his 180 degree dunks just about every game.

Full length pants? What year or decade was that?

I remember seeing Anthony Eubanks play along with Eddie Mullet and Kevin Hicks (UTC transfer). Steve Dillon was kicked out his senior year. Those full length pants must have been back in the Bobby Murr era or something. They beat LBC by 20 at home when Dale Gibson was coach. That team (LBC) had a lot of disciplinary problems

And who can forget Paul Pridemore and his mid-70s T-bird always parked in front of the gym.

FYI, I am the Head Coach for Florida 561 Select and had the pleasure of working with Andrew this past spring/summer. I can tell you he's one of the hardest working and most skilled big man you're going to find. He's not your classic 'back to the basket' player. I consider him a Point Forward with his great court vision. He'll knock down 3's, square up and throw one down in your mug, or draw the defense and hit the open man. What's even more impressive is that, as good as he is on the court, there's no better young man that will represent your school.

The phone hasn't stopped ringing since his sleeper writeup at the Adidas Showcase last May. The past 6 months have been a whirlwind of activity, but you definitely won't be disappointed (and he's a 4.0 student). Dunphy at Temple was the first to compare him to Gordon Hayward. His frame can easily handle 30 lbs and I think he still may grow little more. I hope you're as excited as I am to watch him in action at the next level. Please welcome him with open arms...and ask him to take off from the foul line :)

Regards,
Kirk Meyerson

And my wife says that his mom was the prettiest girl at Temple. However, I would have to respectfully disagree. Mrs. Cider was/is the prettiest, but Monica was a close second.

Welcome, but McMasters was supposed to bulk up when he got here too. JVP also, but haven't really seen it yet. JVP moreso than McMasters.

Glad to hear that LU beat out his Mom and Dad's alma mater of Tenn. Temple. Go Flames!

Based on the stats I could find Andrew is averaging 28ppg, 10.5 rpg, 5 apg, 3.25 blocks per game. Shooting 68% from the field, 46% from 3, and 69% from FT.

I don't care if he is facing the Little Sisters of the Poor, those are great numbers against anyone. I can't wait until he arrives on campus.

It's odd too. Andrew was 11/11 one game and 5/10 the next.

Impressive numbers, and unless I'm mistaken the competition is not the worst. For those who may be a bit quick to get excited about gaudy high school stats, I give you 2 names:

Russ Monroe (need I say more?) &

Steve Farquar

Steve averaged just short of 50ppg his senior year of HS, which unofficially led the nation, but he played in a conference of tiny christian schools, many of which literally had problems putting 5 guys on the floor because that was most of the male students in the school. He did have some talent, but had a difficult transition to D1 ball, and ended up being remembered more for his all out hustle (most notably his death-defying horizontal dives to save balls in bounds) than for his scoring exploits.

Andrew Smith has good genes on his side: both parents were varsity athletes when Tenn. Temple was in its prime athletically, and his mom was the best basketball player ever to put on a Crusader uniform.

Of course, the same can be said for Carter McMasters, and his dad, so maybe olldflame has a good point after all (but I hope not).

Also, wasn't there a Christian school kid from Alabama who led his home state in scoring, came to LU, but only lasted a year or two? I forget his name, but I think he transferred to UAB, but never did much there either, due to injuries.
