Actually Juice has been telling everyone he knows that he is interested in getting a college job. I think he would be a great hire just for the players he could get and the development of the post players. He will get his chance eventually but I doubt it will be at LU. Again, coach Layer went to his guys as most coaches would. I wish Liberty would tap into Juice's connections. He would not only impact men's basketball but the other sports as well. People forget that Juice helped Liberty get the best women's hoops player ever (arguably) Elena Kisseleva and certainly the best volleyball player ever in Antonia a while ago. He is about to go back to the D.R. to play for a few months but after that he is going to push hard for a coaching job.

I would think Matt Hildebrand would be a top candidate as an assistant if Jeff got the job....Ryan Mantlo would be too but he really doesn't know coach Meyer that well I don't think.

For the record, Dream is the Jordan to Nigerians. But Juice is certainly bigtime in Lagos .... and the huge Nigerian community in Houston.

Indeed Juice is pushing hard for a coaching gig (rightfully so) with an impressive list that would love to play at the next level (college) under him.

Word is though it's harder then ever to make these players a reality due to tougher regulations in place.

I don't know if Coach Lundy would be interested in the GWebb job. I'm pretty sure that Marquette would throw a lot of money at him to get him to stay. That being said, he would turn their program around and I would guess that he has some personal motivation to get even for his situation but it would be very hard to leave a perennial top 20 program.

They would throw money at a D-Op to try and keep him? That's one heck of a job.

Thats Marquette where no expense is to great. The entire BB program is at the top of the food chain from a private jet, daily catered meals, to one of only 4 teams in America wearing the new Jordans. It would be my guess that Lundy is not to far from making what your head coach makes. I think that I read last month that they have the highest BB budget in the NCAA, Williams makes about 1.2 mil. That should tell you something and would you not think that Williams would put to use a coach that has coached in over 300 games winning over 200 of them. Your currant coach certainly put Lundy to use when he hired him at Queens because 2 years after hiring Lundy, Layer made his first appearance in the NCAAs.

Oh, I am a big fan of Bart Lundy, not trying to hate on him, just seems weird to throw money to keep a D-Op, but if you have the money, then why not spend it...

Two telling quotes from Burch in the Star article:
“We don’t have a blank check. "
“We want someone who’s ready to prove himself at Division I and the time is right and the fit is right at Gardner-Webb... The best way usually is to find someone who’s been through those wars, maybe as an assistant, but who knows what it’ll take to win a Big South championship.”
Translation: We aren't looking for Big South retread head coaches. We're looking for an up-and-coming assistant who has Big South experience but who's working somewhere that won't cost a lot to get him.

If I'm G-W, I'm taking a hard look at Earl Grant.

No doubt there will be some good young coaches applying for this job. I would think if Lundy wanted to be a head coach again that this job would be attractive. Panfan you may know better than me at this point because I don't have any inside info on this but it seems like Marquette would allow Bart to pursue other ventures and not try to retain him so that he could advance his career. Of course they would hate to lose him but would let him go especially for a chance to be a head coach again. Who knows though. Staying in the Big East even as the ops guy would be tempting especially if you are making good $.

Mr Scar, I have no idea what Coach Lundy would want. What I do know however is that he can coach and recruit and I know what he did at HP. You are certainly right in that Marquette would want Coach to pursue his career and I'm sure that they would hate to see him go and may want to make it worth it to stay. I'm also sure that they handled Coach Layers decision in the same manner. His experience was surely invaluable to Coach Williams last year. Coach Layer wanted to be head coach again thus his decision to leave Marquette and build the LU program. I'm sure that he left MU with their blessing and best wishes as would Coach Lundy if he decided to take another job as head coach.

Lundy makes 140k @ Marquette -- the Webb cannot pay that much. Lundy will get bumped up to full time assistant @ Marquette and then from there probably get a mid major job in 4 to 5 years.

Since we are talking jobs, here some news to watch:

Randy Peele could be in the mix @ ECU, also Ritchie McKay's name has popped up there as well. Although the pirates have offered the job to Joe Dooley already.

Scruggs was making roughly $100K plus benefits, with two years left on his contract. I have no idea or info. on what if any buyout took place. I'm still of the thinking we should look at a solid D-2 wanting to move up a level. I can't see G-W going the way of Coastal for instance, and getting a name coach like Ellis, even though the Dave Odom's and Eddie Fogler's of the world are plentiful.

You are right. They probably wouldn't want him to leave but I just don't see them offering him more money to stay. But like you said, if they have tons of money anyway, they might as well offer him if they want to keep him. Every coach is different though. It depends on what he values most. Some want to be a head coach and some are willing to wait it out for a better job as a head coach. If he stays at Marquette he could probably get a pretty good mid major job in a few years. I hope I run into him at the final 4 this year. I will ask him. He is a very likeable guy too. I enjoyed talking to him as much as any visiting coach into the Vines. His assistant last year Damon Stephenson is a character too.

If Soucie get hired as Head Coach, and if McKay still feels called to be an assistant coach...

The process has been slowed since President Bonner was out of the country for 10 days on a trip, I believe with a student trip on spring break. Now that he is back, expect the job to be filled rather quickly. No word on recruits or the few players we have back bolting, but the commits we had were not much on paper to shout about anyway.

The first hire made by John Groce upon accepting the position of head coach at Ohio University, the well-liked and respected Chris Holtmann begins his 12th season as a college coach and second at Ohio in 2009-10 with a reputation among his peers as a passionate teacher of the game, a committed tactician and a tireless recruiter.

In Holtmann's first season at Ohio, the Bobcats posted the sixth-lowest opponent scoring average in program history.

Holtmann's primary duties include working with the Bobcats' wing players, as well as assisting Groce in the coordination of Ohio's varied and attacking defensive package, and the transition in his first year in Athens was seamless.

Ohio's wings put on an offensive show under Holtmann's tutelage in 2008-09, leading the Mid-American Conference in three-point field goal percentage for the first time in school history with a mark of 36.3 percent that also equaled the ninth-best output in program annals. Guard Tommy Freeman was the ringleader of the Bobcats' aerial display, topping the MAC and tying for seventh on Ohio's single-season chart after converting at a rate of 42.5 percent from beyond the arc, while forward Justin Orr and guard Steven Coleman also finished the year ranked in the league's top-15 in three-point efficiency.

Coleman turned in a dynamite rookie season under Holtmann's watchful eye, earning MAC All-Freshman Team honors after leading conference freshmen in field goal percentage (47.1) and steals per game (1.66), while ranking second in three-point field goal percentage (34.6) and assists per game (2.50) and third in points per game (9.8). Coleman's 47.1 percent mark from the floor was also good for seventh in the overall MAC rankings.

A critical component of the attacking-style defense employed by the Bobcats, the Ohio wings also benefited from Holtmann's defensive prowess during his first year on the bench. As a group, the wings were integral in limiting opponents to an average of only 65.0 points per game, the sixth-best opponent scoring mark in program history. Coleman proved to be a ballhawk on the perimeter from the outset of the campaign, leading the team and ranking fifth in the MAC with an average of 1.66 steals per contest.

Holtmann came to Ohio after a five-year stint at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C., including the last four as associate head coach. During his time at GWU, Holtmann began to craft his reputation as both a defensive tactician and tireless recruiter.

Under Holtmann's guidance, the Runnin' Bulldogs led the Atlantic Sun Conference in three-point field goal percentage defense (30.7) and ranked second overall in field goal percentage defense (42.2) in 2007-08. Gardner-Webb also finished second in the A-Sun in field goal percentage defense in 2004-05, Holtmann's second season on staff.

The Nicholasville, Ky., native was also integral in the recruitment of both the 2008 A-Sun Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year to GWU. Holtmann-protégé Thomas Sanders captured the POY award, along with Associated Press honorable mention All-America honors, after becoming the first Gardner-Webb player in 20 years to average a double-double, while Nate Blank averaged 10.8 points per game in 2007-08 to bring home A-Sun Freshman of the Year accolades.

Tim Jennings, another Holtmann recruit at GWU, earned A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year twice during his career and was instrumental in leading the Runnin' Bulldogs to a regular-season conference title in 2004-05. Two of Holtmann's last four recruiting classes at Gardner-Webb were ranked in the national top-100, a key reason for GWU's recent victories over Southeastern Conference powerhouse Kentucky, Big Ten foe Minnesota and Conference USA member East Carolina (twice).

Prior to his tenure in Boiling Springs, Holtmann served as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Taylor University, the alma mater that he and Groce share. The Trojans won back-to-back conference titles and posted at least 25 wins in each of his last two seasons on the bench, finishing eighth and 13th in the NAIA polls, respectively.

Holtmann broke into college coaching at Taylor in 1997, serving as the team's graduate assistant for a year before spending a season as a full-time assistant at Geneva (Pa.) College.

After a standout career at Jessamine County (Ky.) High School, Holtmann played with Groce under NAIA Hall of Fame coach Paul Patterson at Taylor. He earned All-America honors in 1994 as captain of the NAIA's top-ranked team.

Holtmann earned a degree in psychology from Taylor in 1994 and a Master's in athletic administration in 2000. He is married to the former Lori Bedi

I'm VERY happy with this hire. Holtmann was a class act the first go-round here, and that while having to do not only all of Scruggs' dirty work, but also having to do Scruggs' damage control as well with faculty, staff, boosters, etc. A big rebuilding job ahead, but I feel we have the right man for the job in place now. :D
