It's pretty difficult for freshman to make first-team all-conference in all conferences, not just the Big South. The upper classmen generally have some advantages over freshmen due to the extra collegiate experience and experience with their teammates that don't generally show up in the stats. It's not LU hate, that's just the way all-conference teams work...

Yeah, but that's because, typically, freshman aren't relied upon to make significant contributions to their teams. When they are, they're rewarded. I don't recall anyone saying that Kevin Durant didn't deserve his accolades because he was only a freshman.

You guys are still creating false limitations. Traditiomally its hard for freshman. So what. LU doesn't deserve 2 guys. What does LU deserving anything have to do with this. This "award" has nothing to do with Ws and Ls

But the CAA, Big South, NCAA, The City of Lynchburg, etc. etc. all hate us! We have a fan club of haters! (True life!)

JL-F was Radford's THIRD leading scorer behind Parakhauski and Thomas, and their THIRD best player behind Parakhauski and Johnson. He barely makes first team all-Radturd.

flameshaw wrote:The Big BS has never been too bright about things like this. (Just look at who we have for a commish, Mr. Zero Personality KK). Seems some people are pre-ordained to become all conference, POY, etc. regardless of performance or lack thereof. A couple of examples:

A couple of years ago when the HP guy gets MVP of the BS Tourney, when they lose to LU by 40+. Even he knew he shouldn't have gotten the award and gave it to the LU guy. (Sorry, some-timer's is kicking in, I can't remember names like I used to). This was the biggest injustice I have ever seen in any sport ever. Can't imagine anyone knowing what a basketball is watching that tourney and giving the MVP to the HP guy.

Back in the 80's Peter Aluma got the Tourney MVP as a senior, we lost the game, but Peter should have never received the award. (I am as big a PA fan is there is/was, just stating facts).

There have been others, but those are a couple of big boo boos I remember. Seth being left off the first team was almost as bad.

As someone said, glad Chris see's it the same way. Gives some credibility to what we know here was a big guffaw by the BS.
Yes and the Big Spouth conference "milked" that gesture of Danny Gaithings for all it was wort. Gaithings even came to LU and presented the actual award to Blair; HOWEVER, the Big South Media Guide still lists Gaitthings as the winner of the award. He did everything he could to do the right thing...the conference made no such effort.

...that is the only argument that holds any weight. When a guy is the third best player on his own team, he certainly doesn't deserve all conference honors.

"Milking it" is a good way of describing what the BS is doing with Gathing's gesture of sportsmanship. They even featured it prominantly in their "best of the best" series of videos celebrating their 25th anniversary. They insist they cannot change the recipient of the award in their official records because Gathings was elected under the rules at the time. They acknowledged that those rules were very flawed, and to their credit, changed them almost immediatly, before the women's final.

For those who do not know, the problem arose because voting for the tournament MVP was conducted BEFORE the final game. As a result, Larry Blair's stellar performance in the blowout final and the gigantic egg Gathings laid were not taken into account, and Gathings was voted MVP based on his play in the first 2 rounds (still somewhat debatable). MVP and all-tourney voting now occur at or near the end of the final game.

Kevin Durant was the clear cut choice for Player of the Year in his conference and was a clear cut choice for first-team all-america and national player of the year. Based on the voting, Seth Curry probably wasn't even in consideration for conference POY. And considering the coaches voted on this, I have to say they know a bit more about who is the best in the conference than some message board users do. If the BS hates LU so much, then why was Anthony Smith voted as the preseason conference POY, why was Smith first-team, why was Curry FOY, was were both Jessee and Seth all-freshmen team? Everyone that got rewarded is who deserved to be rewarded, how is that a sign of LU hatred? If you combine the first, second, and freshmen team, Lu had four selections (Seth twice), GW 2, radford had two, vmi two, unca 2, presby 1, hpu 1, and coastal one. That's pretty good for a team that finished third place. Yeah the coaches must really hate LU, must be nice to get rewarded more while being hated so much...

I never said the BS hated LU (in this context). I was the one who said they demonstrated flawed wisdom by voting Anthony Smith over Seth Curry for 1st Team Conf.

There is an institutional jealousy/disdain toward Liberty that has been exhibited by our fellow conference members since we joined the league. Most believe it is due to political/religious differences with our school and founder. To deny these points is to deny reality.

That said, most of the Old Hags who have been around the program for awhile know that it is nowhere near the issue today it was just a few years ago. But that doesn't stop us from pointing out the obvious snubs with zest.

There is absolutely no basis for Seth to not be first team other than perhaps a backlash from others in the league over all of the attention he has received.

Can someone argue again that there is no LU hate around the league?

i dont know why you are comparing seth and joey......they always put 2 guards and 3 forwards/centers.....you should be comparing to smith or holmes

No they don't ... they just take the top 5 vote getters. Seth finished 6th. Some writers & Coaches are grinning somewhere about putting that Curry kid in his place.

I agree that it could have more, but it still points out that this team has some notable talent on it, which is why they have beaten the best, and might be the best.

I have to call you on that one poppa. Voting is NOT by position. This year's team had 3 almost totally inside players, with only one real guard and no point guard, but there have been years when 5 guards were named to the first team. Joey is a good player whose numbers suffered this year because big Art was a similar player, but just that much bigger and better. If Parakhauski doesn't transfer to RU, JL-F might have been POY, but as it was Seth, Augst of UNCA and Coleman of Presby were all more productive and more valuable to their teams.

This doesn't mean I disagree that Joey L-F has no business on the 1st team- it's just that you guys are undercutting Anthony Smith value to your team for Seth to be First team- I couldn't disagree more with that.. Seth's just too 1 dimensional (scorer) for that consideration right now- anyone can lead the league in scoring with the green light he gets & the amount of shots he puts up- I haven't really seen Seth make anyone on your team better all year.. Seth may be a better player- but is he better for your team?? I don't believe so..
In my own mind I am somewhat of a legend, but I don't think I could lead the league regardless of the shots I took.

4 of 5 on the first, 3 of 5 on the second, 4 of 5 on the freshman. What happened to Warren from Charleston Southern?

Seth Curry second-team All-Big South

Image

Seth Curry, younger brother of Davidson star Stephen Curry and a freshman guard at Liberty, is the nation's top scoring freshman and ranks 21st overall in the country but was denied a spot on the Big South Conference first-team when results were released on Monday.

Seth, who is averaging 20.6 points per game, was named second-team all-Big South and named the league's freshman of the year. Player of the year honors went to Radford center Artsiom Parakhouski.
