B.J. Jenkins Signs With MSU Basketball

Murray State Basketball Head Coach Billy Kennedy announced the signing of 6-0 guard B.J. Jenkins.

The native of Virginia Beach, Va. transfers to MSU from Liberty University and will sit out the 2008-09 season and have two seasons to compete for the Racers beginning with the 2009-10 season.

“B.J.’s ability to score and play both guard positions was something I liked,” Kennedy said. “He’s a good student and a tough competitor.”

That's not near home in case anybody doesn't know where Murray State is.

Why would he go to Murray State. I don't understand it at all. Talk about a program even lower than ours.

They (186) were 70 spots higher in the RPI last year than we (256) were. It's a state school. That last part was probably a bigger deal to him than you guys think.

My educated opinion (which is all any of us have), is that he didn't like the outlook of the PT for his senior year.

Well we all know RPI means everything.

I agree, if you can't get playing time, it is useful to go some where where your services are needed. I wish him all the luck.

I still say that it being a state school and not having the atmosphere that Liberty does played into it more than playing time or anything on the court.

I really hate to bring this discussion back up, but I don't think PT was much of a factor. He was going to be a starter next year initially, after that who knows. But this is D1, to think you don't have to worry about PT is ludicrous.

I understand where you're coming from, but I don't see it as being a big factor in his decision. We probably will never know though and it doesn't really matter.

Murray State has a very nice program. I'm glad for BJ.

The fact that BJ, who was odd man out here, can actually move up to Murray, speaks directly to the talent level of our new group coming in.

BJ would have started until he graduated.

Your Seth Curry man crush is setting yourself up for failure.

I think BJ would rather play for a better team and have long hair than play here with short hair. Knowing BJ, I know he wouldn't run from competition. He was no odd man out. He is cocky, he knows his skills, he isn't running from some high schoolers. He is just going somewhere he will be happy. Spend 30 minutes with BJ and you'll know. He isn't scared. He knows how good he can be. And I am now a Murray State Fan, and I hope BJ tears it up for his 2 years there.

I'll take the word of those who know BJ that playing time was not a factor in his transferring, but IMHO it is just as speculative for lefty to say categorically that BJ would have started til he graduated as for paradox to say he would have lost his job. Nobody really knows yet how good Curry, Stephene, Floyd, Weaver and Sanders are going to be. For that matter, we don't know if or how much BJ would have improved.

I do think there is a bit of excess nostalgia about what we have lost in BJ transferring. While he has talent, and is versatile, the fact is he was very inconsistant last year. He had some really productive games, and some others where he almost disappeared, and this is in a situation where he was playing huge minutes on a team with no depth. My take is that from a talent perspective, we have replaced him and perhaps then some. What we will miss is his experience. The results on the floor will depend on how rapidly the newcomers can adjust to D1 ball.

Speaking of speculation, saying that we have replaced his talent is NOTHING BUT speculation, because you have not seen Seth Curry guard Winthrop's guards, or Jesse Sanders pass down low around Joey Lynch Flour. You don't know if they are going to be able to come close to his triple double potenial, or his defensive prowess. I hope Seth can fill his shoes, and that Jesse gives us good minutes, but I would use pencil when putting them in BJ's place on the stat sheet.

So tell me lefty..... how many triple doubles does BJ have in his career?

How many times has he even come CLOSE? ....... let's say a double double with 7 or 8 in the other category?

The answer is never, because he has never even had a double double, although he did have 13 points 9 rebounds and 8 assists in the home blowout over UNCA. I'll admit that's a great stat line, and I guess you could say he was close to a triple double there.

Keep in mind he played well over 30 minutes a game last year.

At HP 0 points, 0 assists, 3 rebounds.
At Chuck South 2 points, 1 assist, 1 rebound.

He shot 40% from the field and 31% from 3, and had almost as many turnovers as assists.

I could go on.

You used the term potential for a player with 2 years of D1 experience. That goes beyond speculation into the realm of faith.

I don't think its much of a stretch to say that among the 5 guards/swing players coming in we have replaced his talent.
