In 2000 Hanky signed 11 players. 9 made it to campus, but one of those never made it onto the court.

If Bonds does not return, and Layer fills his schollie and Allen's with 2 late signees, that would be 11 this year, tying that somewhat dubious record for NLIs signed. If there are no more defections, we could have 9 new players, which would be a record. That is not counting preferred walkon Calvin Hoffman.

We're looking at 9 new scholarship players in the program, counting transfer Theo Johnson, who will sit under transfer rules and 9 new players on the court, counting Kemrite, who redshirted last year.

Looks like we have moved quickly and gotten a committment from another PG, 6'2" Jordan Dembley from Minneapolis, MN. #6 prospect in Minnesota, and the guys ahead of him signed with Duke, Stanford, Xavier and Richmond. He had 7 D1 offers. No telling why he hadn't signed before now, but welcome aboard Jordan!

Not something to hang your hat on. He was actually tied for 6 and the other guy is going to hoops powerhouse The Citadel. Minnesota isn't a deep hot bed of hoops talent. This is a desperation move, but Bonds and his girlfriend left us in a near desperate situation. Personally, I'm not sure I would have used the scholarship this year, we would be bound to get a more talented player next year. But we are 'stuck' with this guy. Oh well, I hope I'm wrong, but I rarely am.

Wow... I 1000% agree with every word in this post. You aren't going to play 13 guys anyway... Sit on the Scholarship and use it for real talent next year... You make a rushed decision and its not like they are around for a year, they are around 2-4 years and don't play. Couldn't agree more. Been screaming this for 2 weeks.

Remember guys that scholarships are year to year. As we have seen all over the college landscape including the Big South, not many kids sit on the bench for 4 years. Most either elect to transfer down to another school to get playing time or their scholarship is simply not renewed. I was really looking forward to Bonds being in uniform. I also think sitting on the Scholarship is a solid option but not the only option. If you find a kid that you think can play at this level and contribute, then you sign him. I think that is what happened here. Pure speculation on my part as I haven't really been around the team at all this summer. Having a tiny future Flames shooting guard in the house is time consuming. Actually my son is tracking to be a football player based on his 99th percentile status in body size and head size (paging Medic and Haize for a head joke here :) )

While I don't necessarily disagree with your characterization of the Citadel's basketball program Purple, we did get a really good player a few years ago who started his career there.

Thankfully, the cupboard is not totally bare at PG. We have Retic on board for 2 more years. He showed some positive signs at the end of last year. Between this kid and walkon Calvin Hoffman, we just need about 8-10 decent minutes a game this year. I think Moller could also play there in a pinch.

Layer has yet to enter a year without a full compliment of scholarship players, and I really don't see that changing. I look for us to sign a forward before we're done.

Since I wasnt clear, let me say this. I have 0 problem with signing a kid that you think can play at this level. I just dont like making a rushed decision just to fill a scholarship. Especially if you need a PG (which we do), you think that he can compete here (which is what is up in the air at this point), then sign away. Most everyone's concern is going to be getting a kid (especially a High School Kid), this late. If he can compete at this level, most people assume he would be getting ready to do it somewhere.

We should clarify what we mean by contribute. If you only consider a player to be a contributor if he is competing for a starting job, I'll be pleasantly surprised if Dembley meets the criteria this year. If coming in to spell Retic a few minutes a game and doing a better job than let's say Larry Taylor did 2 years ago is making a contribution, then maybe he can. Maybe DL would be happy just to have someone who can play solid defense and make Retic work hard in practice. I think that is something he looks at, and is one reason he always has all 13 scholarships filled. Governor is correct in saying that it is impossible to give significant minutes to 13 players, but besides the practice thing, sometimes you sign a "project" you think has upside hoping he gets better down the road.

Don't let the wet blankets steal this kid's thunder. I would suggest waiting until you see him on the floor before hating on the scholarship.

If anyone from the Dembley household stumbled across this thread, welcome to the LU family!

Recruiting and finding the right fit are far from an exact science. Just like signing a blue chip recruit early doesn't guarantee success, signing a kid late in the summer doesn't mean he is terrible. Some memorable talent in this program were without a scholarship and ended up walking on and impacting the program in a noteworthy manner. See Kyle Ohman, Brian Woodson and a skinny kid from Philly back in the day with a bowl/fade haircut.

DL's teams have also lost 60 games in 3 years. I understand the argument about keeping all 13 scholarships full I just disagree with it. Especially this late in the year. I hope he does well but color me skeptical based on past performance. I can't tell you how much I hope I am wrong. But I highly doubt it

During that 3 years Layer had only one late signee, Wesley Alcegaire, who signed in July of 2012. Wesley didn't play much in his 2 years with the team, but I highly doubt saving that scholarship for 2013, when we signed Kemrite and Retic, would have made a huge difference. It's the players who were on the court who are to blame for that, not the one at the end of the bench.

If you are talking about the one we still have from Allen I tend to agree. I'm on record as saying I thought he may have been redshirted anyway. Let's see if Layer breaks his trend. As far as Dembley is concerned, when Bonds left, we went from having a freshman we felt could challenge Retic for starting PG to having a walkon as our only backup. I don't blame Layer for being uncomfortable with that and wanting to upgrade.
