Meh, Cassell isn't a total dump, but it could use a couple upgrades-Smoothie is right, the seats are old and rickety and good use an upgrade but the building does lend itself to the potential for a great atmosphere. Problem is, VT is a football school so the fans, who create one of-if not the-greatest football atmosphere don't really get into bball.

However, Iatmospehere aside, 'll take Cassell as a gym over Cameron Indoor anyday. Though personally, I think every school could use something like JPJ-gotta give credit to UVA for building a super-ultra sweet facility.

I'd rather have a Cassell or a Cameron Hall than anything else. I love the old gyms that pack in a ton of people right on the floor.

its cool to disagree when done in good taste and without name calling :D i do like intimate atmospheres like cameron indoor etc., but as a total fan experience cassell is not good. small pissers, horrible concession lines and the seats are just awful. and atrain i will give you props that you said that VT is a football school. i guess you have finally woke up!

I didn't go to the bathroom or concessions, so I don't know about those. It was $3 for a hot dog or bottle of water.

Last night was probably the only time I'll ever get to sit second row at an ACC game. That was pretty cool.

Doing TV, I've been to most if not all the arenas in the region. I would vote The Cassel as the best atmosphere. The crowd is right on top of the court, they are loud and into it, there is not 1 bad seat in the house, I can pee in a crouded bathroom just fine, they feed me when I'm there, it is hard for the opponet to think. It's a lot for me to say that seeing as I don't like Tech much. Second has to be Cameron Hall.

One thing that helps the feel of Cassell (and Cameron Hall, Winthrop Coliseum, etc) is that their is a wall separating the seats and the concourse. One of the reasons the Vines feels so big is that the concourse isn't closed off to the seating.

yeah...to me that is something that with some thought could be redone...but with so many things going on in the Vines Center year round its hard to find a time to change anything in the Vines....

But the Vines when near full can be pretty darn loud...just watch a tape of the 2004 Big South Championship and you can see that right away....but we all know that anyways

I was wondering if that could be changed in the Vines (the concourse issue). With all of the stuff that goes on, I wonder if it'd hinder some of the other events by closing it off. I don't even know if it's structurally possible. It'd make it seem more "homey" than just a big open space.

Cameron Hall is at VMI. Cameron Indoor is at Duke. There seems to be some miscommunication of this from reading responses to SJ's post. Secondly, Coach Meyer did Beat Tech I believe but the last 2 games Liberty won were coached by Hankinson which I believe someone addressed. I have been to Caeron Hall many times but only as a player and a coach. I am looking forward to seeing a few games though this season as a fan.

I think that they could remodel it a bit to give it a more closed in look. It would also force those who just stand around to come down to the actual arena...

Just started following LU closely in the last year or so and was waiting to make my first post until I felt I started to earn the right to be considered a fan. I haven't had a chance to get to a computer since Wednesday night untl today. I was at the game in with tickets from the LU Ticket Office. Apparently I was the only one. I was on row EE (thats the top row at center court) and section 5 (dead in the corner with 6 rows behind me). Apparently I was the only one with tickets from there because it was my duagher and myself and a smattering of Hokie fans.

In response to the conditions on the areana, the colisium looks old and with an aisle seat if I had spread my feet out too far I would have fallen because of the shape of the step. Not my favorite place but it is what it is for that old.

As far as the game, it was fun to hear the LU section make more noise consistently in the first half than the rest of the Cassel. I thought the team played well but couldn't shoot. Looking forward to seeing the return game with Campbell on the 28th. At least I'll know I can see the game better.

Welcome to the board, nosebleed. And don't ever hesitate to post because you are family.

The arena was a dump back in the '80s so I certainly hope it has had significant upgrades over the years. Otherwise ...
