I expected top four finish and a semifinals berth. To say there were no expectations is a cop out.

We overachieved this year by working harder than people and doing all of the little things. In the last three weeks we didn't have a chip on our shoulder and talent/athleticism beat out our hard work.

Let's just hope we don't have 2-3 impact players transfer out. If we can hold on to everyone for next year, I'd be surprised if we didn't surpass 25 wins.

Well said. +1 I would add to you "Layer is really proving he can coach" with JB does have something to do with that.

Last night I was angry. I over reacted to Evan's lack of intensity out there. It still frustrates me, but even with his lack of energy we had a shot at winning. We had tons of wide open shots that simple did not fall...I mean I lost count. We were ice cold and really you can't do much about that as a coach. I did think the offense was a bit stale, but its no different then it has been all year. We hit open shots and all of a sudden the offense looks awesome.

I am disappointed in the loss, I am disappointed that evan is pis s ing away his God given talent, but ultimately we improved from last year and that is all you hope for. Next year I expect much of the same and I hope Evan matures a little bit.

We probably won't get in it now that we've lost 5 straight. Had we at least 2 more we probably would get an invite.

Another thing to remember that these recent losses (besides Iona) were to teams that saw us for a second or third time and had time to figure out how to shut us down. Add to that cold shooting from a lot of people for 2 or 3 weeks, and you have last night.

The mark of a good coach is to make adjustment especially after halftime. Anyone hear of a box/diamond and one or triangle and two to slow down or stop their main shooters. That is my biggest beef with Layer

we could still get into the CIT. cause all the CIT is is who is willing to pay the most money from what I remember... though it will be surprising if we do

like i said before Evan didn't deserve to be in a jersey last night much less on the court.... we were better then HPU and yet we played like we were St. Mary's School for the Blind... yes we kept it close, but there was no reason we shouldn't have been beating those guys by 15+

for those who say we had no expectations coming into the year, you may be right... but that doesn't mean that over the course of a year watching this team we didn't gain expectation for them...

most fault goes on the player/coaching staff... the 1st half I would say falls to the players and the 2nd half to the coaching staff, more because halftime is when the coaching staff should make adjustments and that simply did not happen.

i won't speak on the JBarber thing

It was a good season, we did exceed expectations, Laver did a good job, I believe the talent level of our team is down from years past, but I also believe that the Big South is down this year, & I am interested in JB's thoughts.

Obviously, we're not where JB wanted to be at this point in his administration. If he has made comments, perhaps someone could post them here.

Anyway, it was a great season for the majority of it. Simply fell off at the end...

Certainly a disappointing/frustrating end to what was shaping up to be a very good season. Personally, I just don't see the point of all the freaking out though. With the possible exception of checkers, I doubt if anybody here would suggest we need to make a coaching change. The team made huge strides, and accomplished more in the regular season than anyone expected. There's no denying that the past few games culminating in last night's fiasco have been a huge letdown, and getting at least a first round win was probably the one thing we had actually expected that they did not accomplish.

Evan definately has talent, and he has great family support. I understand his dad was at the game last night. I'm hoping he can get his attitude straight and move on with acheiving his potential. I'm excited about the prospects for next year just based on the returning players. Add Baird, Smith, Gielo and possibly a guard, and we could have a team that will match up talent wise with anyone in the conference, and hopefully play as hard as this years team did.

For those who are saying that the Big South is down this year, while I don't know what it is at this moment, earlier in the year the conference RPI was 17, which is the highest it has ever been.

So now that our season is over, who are you pulling for in the Big South semi-finals? Anybody else jumping aboard the Duggar bandwagon over at VMI?

Really? Your biggest beef is that the coach didn't come out in some type of junk defense?!?! His name is Dale LAYER not Dale BROWN. (And if you don't know who HE is...... ) How are those junks working against Jimmer?
As for half time adjustments those are easily said then done. For starters, the adjustments that need to be made may not be realistic with the type of personell you have. Secondly, the players have to actually execute said adjustments. Finally, how much should you change from what brought you success most of the season? When the ball goes in the basket and/or players put forth maximum effort, coaches look like geniuses.
If you look at games as snapshots, then we should all be lining up on the 5th street bridge. However, if you look at a SEASON as a whole, the we should be lining up at the Texas Inn for Double Westerns!! Coach Layer did, IMO, an outstanding job this year and deserves the COY honor.

Seeing how the team I pull for usually loses, "Go CCU!"

(In my best Brick Heck whisper "Go VMI")

Down to 22 as of Monday. CCU, LU, and PC (after Coleman went down) stumbling down the stretch didn't help any.

I'm pretty sure if you were to look at past years you would find that 22 is still one of the better RPIs the BSC has had. I know we have been as high as 29 or 30 a time or two.

Congratulations to Coach Layer, a great season with 19 wins, 13 conference victories and Coach of the Year honors. Also congratulations to Jessie Sanders for his strong leadership and Player of the Year award. John Brown,David Minaya Joel Vander Pol and Antwan Burrus .....you were all fun to watch. Thank you for all the thrilling wins, especially the win in the Vines against UNCA. I'm looking forward to what next season brings with Coach Layer and the core of players returning to the court. That's all I have to say....let the whinning continue......

Here is my question you all of you who are just tossing this season aside with all of the other "good" not "great" seasons... how can you keep on discarding good seasons that wind up in failure to make it to the NCAA'S without questioning anything? It has been 6 years since I walked on to campus as a freshman now im an alumni and what have we to show for that as far making the NCAA tourney? 0 in mens basketball 0 in baseball 0 in football 0 in soccer. Im sorry im not jumping off the boat but I am getting sick of failure in big games. Yes this is carry over from football season. Yes im still bitter from the years I worked with the football team and we never made the playoffs. So forgive me for being on my soap box a little longer than normal this time.

Rooting for CCU. Will be more fun to watch when they take it away this Summer.

You can't lump basketball into this "I've been here six years" basket. If it'd been the same coach, or even one coaching change in six years then ok. We made a chance two years after you got here. Two years into that change, that coach left us in worse position than when you got here. If we were four years into this coaching change, which is where we would've been if McKay hadn't left us, and we were still losing in the first round then I'd understand where you're coming from.
#342037
We can avoid my inner thoughts, as you veterans all know what they are..

But we did have a good season. It went south at the end.... but it was a good season.

And I just hate it when every time we lose a game we want to fire the coach.

That's what the guy I don't like did, & i'd love to have the authority to return the favor,

which I would do by 10:00 a.m. the next morning, but that's got absolutely nothing to

do with this conversation. (Please forgive me)

BREAKING NEWS: Liberty University drops expectations for men's basketball.

Despite the unprecedented spending by Athletic Director Jeff Barber to create a "mid major" power at Liberty University, after four years with a 1-4 Big South Conference Tournament record it was announce today that we are to be happy with our performance and headed in the right direction.

The 2010-2011 season was highlighted 13 wins in an expanded and weakened Big South Conference.
The 19 win total was bolstered by impressive victories over 3 non-Division 1 patsies Virginia Intermont, Southern Virginia and Union College. The markee wins for the season are over a Chicago St 6-24, Mississippi Valley 12-18 and William & Mary 9-21. Obviously we are closing the gap on mid-majors as George Mason and Iona came to The Furnace and defeated us only by a combined total of 50 pts.

No reason to be concerned that when teams are suppose to be playing their best we dropped 5 straight to end the great season.

Tuesday nights performance wildly exceeded expections in that Scott Cherry could bring his 3-16 two year road record to Vines Center and whip our tails. Thankfully we had the lowest attendance in LU history for a BSC tournament game. But our AD has delivered promotional efforts that are spectacular. Certainly with JB leading the way there are new levels of expectations to follow.

Maybe we can buy our way into another post season tournament.
