If they can definitely lock down a civic center nearby (Coastal, CSU, Asheville) then they can be in it as well. There's no way that Asheville, CSU, CCU, and HPU should be able to host.

Now these are the kind of sights that look great on TV.

There was no point in posting that. Those are the types of atmosphere you get whenever the home team is in the championship game which is guaranteed under the current format. The problem comes in the 2nd round.

I agree that there are benifits to having the home team in the final (although I think you could have made that point without being harsh to Mr. Williams.)

It may sound crazy but why not have the tournament at a neutral place up until the final and then play the final a few days later on the highest remaining seeds floor. Or maybe even give the regular season champ a bye into the final and have it on their home floor assuming they have an arena that can host it.

I'm sure the conference will use this idea... if CSU ever gets the 1 seed. I think that is the only place where the Big South would step in and make them move it. They should do it for all that you listed...

Does the Big South get any ticket money from these games or does all of the money go to the host?

Hmmm.... so UNCA not moving it is going to cost the Big South money.

If the games are held in UNCA's gym and not moved to a bigger place, there is a chance that they will have to turn people away (or people will just stay away because they don't think they'll be able to get a ticket). That will mean fewer tickets sold. That will mean less money made off of ticket sales. And that will mean less money for the Big South. Now, who knows how much less... the winners of the first round games will decide a lot of that. My point (if I really have one) is that it would be in the best interest of the Big South if the tournament was held at a bigger place.

I think youre right. You might see more of that next year or in the upcoming years... For now it hasnt been anywhere but Winthrop and Liberty so that they could make a lot. We will see how it all turns out this year

You can forget about UNCA moving the tourney to the Civic Center:
The Bulldogs had the option of moving the tournament to the larger Asheville Civic Center, which can seat at least 5,000 for basketball.

The Civic Center would have played better on TV. More people could have the opportunity to watch the tournament in person. The Big South probably would have made more money. But when it came time to make a decision, Asheville athletic director Janet Cone decided to do what was best for her basketball program.

Man, if Faison gets more playing time for WU and Tyler Baker gets healthy for LU then it won't be a problem because Winthrop or Liberty will be the 1 seed. :D

I actually spoke with a high level member of the Athletic Department sunday and talked about the options. They want to keep it at Justice which really is a smart move for UNCA. First its spring break this week so while the community turn-out will be fine if the event was moved to the civic center odds are that most students won't be back from break yet -- and fans from other teams would get the majority of the tickets. Thus--playing on campus truly ensures the home court advantage. Furthermore, comfort level for the players -- most of whom have never played at the civic center, a BIG deal.

Obviously it would look better for the big south -- but Asheville has every right to be selfish in this case, I think. If they weren't on spring break I'd love to see it in civic center but even so I still think they might keep it at Justice. As for the argument about big Gyms... Asheville breaks ground on their new complex this fall so, really, Coastal and CSU are the last two with really small gyms (well, i guess High Point is fairly small too). And Gardner Webb comes in next year with a facility that I believe will be the biggest in the conference... Off the top of my head it seats somewhere around 7500-8000 (might be wrong). Not the prettiest place in the world, but huge for a school that size.

One other note--the expense in hosting a tourny at a site is extremely high. The atlantic Sun has just decided (over the last few years) to host at ETSU. A-Sun would be fairly comparable to Big South I think, Big South might be a bit better at the top the last 2 or 3 years. And as for Campbell -- they are building an amazing 40 some million dollar facility right now -- but if you've ever experienced a game in Old Carter...wow. That is something else. Just imagine CSU -- but the roof is about 20 feet higher than the rim, (instead of 50 or 60)... Loudest place i've ever seen a basketball game. Much smaller than Justice in Asheville.

ahem, our place seats anywhere from 9-10k, (it's somewhat disputed).

that seems a tad low. I thought bball seating was in the 8500-9000 range.

But I did check on G-W's place

From their media guide:
The home of the Runnin’ Bulldogs, 4,500-seat Paul Porter Arena, is one of the most intimidatingvenues in the Atlantic Sun Conference

from our media guide:
A major contributor donated the money in 1989 for Liberty to start construction on the
10,000-seat special events/basketball arena on Liberty Mountain. Seating for basketball is
8,500.

you don't count how many seats are broken when you're talking about capacity. That's just silly.

That's still standing room. Easily we could fit 10,000 in there packed out. The front row has like 10 seats and we fit about 20 people in the first row. If everyone stood up, we could fit a lot more. Stop cryin about broken seats.

when there are as many broken seats as we have you have to consider it. in terms of standing room i think we could get 11,000 or possibly 12 in there.
