He could be the nicest person in the world, but I don't know him so I can't say that. I'm glad that, according to you, he's a good kid.Very well said. We're there to enjoy the game, not start a fight. Too often people take things too far. Very rarely do the lines get crossed on our side.
As for Kenny George, I think Coach McKay said it best. He said that Kenny George is an easy kid to pull for because of everything he has to go through. It's obvious that the students at Asheville love him. I'd love to meet him just to talk to him. He's a very unique person and his experiences are something I couldn't even begin to imagine. I wish nothing but the best for the kid. Granted, I don't like how he got to camp out in the lane last night but hey, if the refs aren't calling it, he better do it.
You said you've read a lot, so hopefully you've read where I've said multiple times that the 40 minutes on the floor are a time when all bets are off and things are no holds barred (two cliche's in one sentence, I'm awesome). Before and after the games is completely different than in the game. Last night after the game, I made sure to catch the eye of some of the Asheville students and pointed at them and clapped telling them they did a good job. They were loud and were a good student section. I've got no reason to talk crap even if we would've won. Some of the Asheville students were trying to taunt us by waving by and when I did the good job clap it shocked them like they didn't know how to respond. I try to give credit when it's due. If any of your guys come up here for the game we'll talk crap during the game and invite em out to eat afterwards. That's just how we do things here.

Compared to other schools asheville's volleyball fans are pretty amazing, mostly because the baseball team is in there. Last year a few of the seniors used a big whiteboard and would draw pictures and write stuff....They had songs they sang to the opposing team, some crazy stuff (that often was close to crossing the line). But it was the best atmosphere i'd ever seen at a volleyball game. The small gym also helped. I know last year they set a record with something like 800 people at a regular season volleyball game (it was an hour before the basketball midnight madness event...but still...not bad).SuperJon wrote:Hold My Own wrote:I have now heard from 3 or 4 coach's who say that UNCA is the new Radfurd as far as the fans go....I hear they are tough tough tough peopleI'd rank them 4th at best in the conference.
I'm just relaying the message of the coach's....I know with Volleyball they were yelling Jenny Craig to one of the players on our team and other foolishness and they dont have the nicest coach's either....I'm not saying they are the most creative I think they were just saying that have surpassed other schools as far as their foul and stupid comments
I thought you'd like that Cider, I thought of you when I posted it
Purple Haize wrote:WOW soo much on this:Very good post. I agree with all your points. I will say I think that that the over the back gets called even without displacement at times and many people don't understand what is being called etc. Most "over the back" calls are legal until the guy comes down on the player who has boxed out (correct me if I'm wrong here). Its not that they reached over to get the ball but that they can't do it without (as you say) displacing the other player.
To start with the officiating. Having not seen the game I will always defer to my peeps!! A little clarification, an offensive player can not goal tend. They can cause basket interference, which is touching the ball in the cylinder (which is legal in international play and TOTALLY COOL) For it to be a goal tend the shot must be on its downward arc, above the rim and have a possibility of going in. Those are all very subjective criteria. For instance, just because the ball has hit the back board does not make it goal tending if a defensive player "blocks" it. The 3 second call is something fans ALWAYS complain about. The first thing I would say is look at the team YOU are rooting for and see how long YOUR players are in the lane. Since officials are primarily looking at the defensive players, checking out an offensive player in the lane is not real high on the list. Many officials give "credit" if a player is attempting to get out of the lane or making an aggressive move to the basket when they are in the lane. There is no such thing as OVER THE BACK!!! Repeat that to yourself. YOu can not penalize a player for being stronger and especially TALLER then another player. If I can reach over you and not displace you there is no foul. I can even do what is called the "Cherry Picker" where a player reaches over the other player and grabs the ball. Legal. If a player is trying to box out a player and that player is stronger and able to shack off the box out and jump OVER the player and get the board. Legal. The key point is displacement. If a player moves another player out, then that is a foul. Also, be alert to make sure your player is boxing out. If they are not boxing out then most officials won't call anything as both players go for the ball.
And as for the coaching I will jump on the band wagon that it IS refreshing, as an official and LU fan, to hear a coach take responsibility for a loss. It was pointed out that this was his first BSC game, and I agree he probably did learn alot. Despite what may be percieved this is a trait that was lacked in previous regimes, (note the PLURALITY of the word, just in case the Kool Aiders are jumping to conclusions) anyone remember heading into the tournament "They only know about 1/2 the play book at the moment". Seriously. It is only inevitable that this staff will be compared to the last staff (and others) just as the last staff was compared to the one before that and the next one wlill be compared to this one. It is the way of the world and a fact of life in coaching. If you can't deal with it you should'nt be in it. So I for one am all for those comparisons, good and bad, continuing. As one who enjoys the use of colorful language from time to time, I can't say that I have ever heard RK swear, but that doesn't mean he hasn't. As for the others......................
