You make a good point, old flame. How much would you offer the new hire? Would you give him RD's salary or up it several thousand?

I'm thinking JB is authorized to offer a little more along with a little more in the budget for his #1 man....

I don't think RD's salary should even enter into the equation because if I were JB and got an application from a candidate with RD's resume, I'm not sure I would even call him for an interview, and I am not, I repeat NOT a Dunton hater. I had genuinly mixed feelings about his departure, mainly because, whatever else you may say about him, this was one guy who really WANTED to be the coach at LU. I think finding someone with the qualifications we want who can match that passion for the school and what it stands for will be JB's biggest challenge.

Look at the facts. One winning season and 5 losing seasons as a D1 head coach. A trip to the dance which was NOT tainted as some have said because of Birmingham Southern's situation, but which WAS largely a product of a couple of JC transfers (Martin and Mantlo) and post players (Sarchet and Sneed) who were left from Hankey, along with LB and Dees, and Dees of course didn't stay around.

I think you use the salaries of coaches throughout the conference as a guideline and then adjust according to the resume of the guy you are offering the job and how strongly you feel about him. Hey if we get an application from someone who has gone to the dance 7 of the last 9 years, I think we should offer him at least $206,957.01!

(Provided of course he goes to church :) )

i read in the news and advance a week or two ago that JB has been given permission to offer as much as it takes to get the right coach in.....i think he will get around greg marshall money or even a little more.....anyone know how much rocco makes? my uncle is one of the news writers for nbc and several years back he was able to look up the salaries of almost all of liberty's employees...i'll have to ask him if he can find that again......

I assure you that if the next guy does the job that we're asking of him... it's well worth whatever the difference will be. Honestly... what is the value of an expanded footprint in terms of name recognition? What about the value of a 75% full Vines? What's the value of a "named" coach bringing buzz to the program just through the advertising that media coverage will give to the school?

I don't know who it will be but I don't think we should be concerned if this guy is loaded... I won't care... As long as he's someone who can deliver.... Value is a strange term... you're only worth what you bring to the table. We won't know the 'value' until the guy has two or three years under his belt. But honestly... even if he makes 250k... lets say that's an extra 100k over Dunton... That means he'd have to add 100k between add revenue, exposure for the program, paid attendance, etc... If he gets the team winning, that 100k is a BARGAIN.

yeah salaries were released in the newspaper a few years ago...but that was B.R. (Before Rocco)...might be a tough thing to find now....and I'm not sure we want to either!

I don't disagree with you Tally, but I'm reminded of what Rick Pitino said when he took over the Celtics job. "Bill Russell isn't walking through that door. Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parrish aren't walking through that door."

Well............................................................ Rick Pitino isn't walking through our door, and neither is Roy Williams or Mike K, or for that matter, neither is Greg Marshall, at least not the 2007 version. I think the best we can hope for is someone with the talent, energy and quality background that Greg Marshall brought to Winthrop 10 years ago and a genuine faith as well. If we find the right one, it will be "priceless", but I don't think it will be a question of how much we can offer in salary, especially on the initial contract. Now if someone comes in and does a "Rocco-like" job of energizing the fan base as well as improving the product on the court, THEN you open the checkbook to keep him around.
