Im sure he does...but I think there are other factors that will play an infinitely larger role in the process

How about we worry about gettin the current coach fired before we worry about his replacement. You may remember we were having the same discussions last year BUT LAYER WAS NEVER FIRED.

I don't even care who's the coach, just get Layer out of here. This is his 6th season and we're at 350 in RPI midway through December. We can't score 60 points to save our lives. It's embarrassing. But hey, "win or lose..."

Who cares at this point? Layer's been here 6 years. Whether it's the system or the talent, it's all HIS. Get him out of here or PTP.

Well obviously I care or I wouldn't have asked. It's a serious question. I agree 100% he should have been gone long ago. I am wondering if what a new coach would have to work with would be usable or would he have to start from scratch, like Buzz at Tech..

We don't have the level of talent to run his system at the Division 1 level.

I think Jeff would come back. Liberty is a really good job right now despite the RPI. The budget and the pay scale alone make it attractive. Then you throw in (in no particular order) a practice facility, HD Scoreboard, TV package, State of the art campus, great Christian environment, winnable conference and the fact that you can't go anywhere but up at this point, then you will attract some major attention for the job when it is open.

He is one of Dale's closest friends. He wouldn't even consider taking the job right after Dale unless Dale was going to retire and ask them to name him the coach. At least that is the impression I get.

It's the same with the Virginia Tech situation and Kevin Keatts. His name came up for the Tech job because he was the top asst at Louisville and he has VA roots as the head of Hargrave for years and being from Lynchburg. However Kevin told me he would never consider that job because he and James Johnson were teammates at Marshall and he was the guy that Johnson was talking to during all the hard times. He lived through the whole process with JJ so he didn't want to be the guy they fired him for.

Plus the administration has shown that they will give a head coach another chance to redeem himself after 1 conference championship, a 75-97 overall record, and 43-43 in the Big South.

Coaches love administrations that pay large salaries and provide large budget with comparatively little pressure. :)

There isn't much pressure at all on the men's hoops team. Football is clearly king and baseball is #2. Just keep us out of the 300s in RPI and you should be fine.

I said it 6 years ago somewhere on this board. Layers past 15 year resume says what he is. He was jb's worst move and the extension was just as bad as doc extending karcher right before we fired him. Has jb fired any of his hires yet? He def hasn't in the major sports.

Has he needed to fire any of his hires in the big 3 though? He didn't hire Rocco. No need to fire Toman. No need to fire McKay. Layer's the first one.

Which is ridiculous. They need to get some people who know basketball, listen to the knowledgeable basketball people who are already connected with Liberty, and fix the program. Men's basketball needs to be the clear #2 sport on campus (nothing against any of the other sports).

Agreed, I'm not a Barber hater. I think he's done an excellent job. I don't think he's fired any major coach other than dunton. This is not a post to trash them. I really respect both guys and Jeff has been first class with me each time I've met him. I was just thinking out loud that he really hasn't fired anyone other than dunton that I know of. That goes to show overall how solid the athletics are. Basketball has been the consistent black sheep. Now we may not have met our expectations in some sports but nowher near this.
