We brought Morgan Hout back. Why not RD? Not as a coach, but as a "recruiting coordinator".

Let him work his recruiting magic to bring us high-major talent, but don't let him anywhere near a clipboard or a court.

MH doesn't have any baggage at all and was released for a lot different reason than RD was. Again, there is a reason RD doesn't have a real job, even though many of his contemporaries at LU are still in the athletic business. THINK ABOUT IT!!!! (Nothing illegal or immoral that I am aware of. No need to make it sound horrific).
Now, can we finally let this go? RD is never coming back. I really doubt he would want to any way.

I tend to not want to talk about RD so I avoid saying this but he had kids in high school and basically has his name on every single commercial real estate listing in town. Those are some pretty good reasons to not get right back into coaching, except local girls teams.

Yeah, we´ve had this discussion before with the cult followers. Don´t you know that coaching at LU isn´t a job, but a calling from God?

Saturday certainly was a welcome result, but I´ll have to see more before I´m convinced we´ve turned any corners. It´s quite possible CC simply had a horrible shooting night, and it didn´t have much to do with us at all.

I know I mentioned a while back that we should recruit more local talent. Only one player on our team is from Virginia and that is Ethan Layer. Looking at some of the teams in the state, here is how they stack up in terms of local talent:

VCU - 16-5 (spent the past few weeks ranked by the way) 6 players from Virginia, including one from Roanoke. (Why can't we get him?)

Richmond - 13-8 - 2 players from VA

UVA - 14-5 4 players from VA

Norfolk State - 12-10 3 players from VA

Radford - 10-11 8 players from VA

Virginia Tech - 11-8 8 players from VA

Additionally, most of these teams are filled with players from NC or MD (we only have 3 players from those states combined.)

We have 5 players from Florida
One from Texas, One from NY
And three international players

Granted, my knowledge about college basketball is in no way impressive. However, I just don't understand how we're benefiting from not getting local kids. Outside of ODU and Longwood, we're the worst team in the state. All of the teams that are better than us have one thing in common, they have multiple kids from VA. Whether or not we keep Layer on for another year, I think this is an issue that needs to be fixed. Probably shouldn't base our recruiting efforts on getting local talent but it's a shame that none of our players from Virginia.

I understand where we're trying to go and the identity that we want to have. We want to bring in the best national and international talent. We want to be like ND and BYU but when we recruit we have to understand that we aren't there yet. I really think we ought to be recruiting like we're a small private division one school, because right now, that's who we are.

There is talent in VA Beach, Richmond, Southside, Lynchburg, Roanoke, NRV and elsewhere. I just can't stand to see schools like Radford and VMI consistently having better seasons when we're capable of being as good as VCU or GMU.

The players can be from the moon as far as I am concerned as long as they have talent and fit our mission. Those other schools honestly can't recruit well most places outside of Virginia and have more established ties in-state. We are unique in the commonwealth of having national profile and student body.

For the record, we have two Texans on the roster with one coming by way of Florida. I'm sure no one is surprised by me stating that our best seasons in the DI era were stacked primarily with Texan talent.

How many true D1 players do we have on roster ? Most of the players we haev cannot put up 2 good games in a row. they have one decent game, then disappear for a couple of games. starters are not consistent, except maybe for Marshall.

12. (or maybe 11. I don't recall our current APR punishment status) How can it get any truer than a scholarship to play D1 basketball?

Liberty University has a national profile. Liberty Flames basketball does not. This is what I think people are missing. Until we are in a bigger conference and national recruits are interested, we'll never get top talent from Texas, Florida...etc. So, as far as I can see, trying to recruit in those areas versus finding local talent is dumb. You can show a kid our student population numbers, you can show a kid our facilities, you can show a kid all of the unique parts about Liberty (convo, Snowflex, classes...etc). However, when they see Big South conference, a total of 2 national tournament appearances and our basketball history, we don't seem so special. I don't care where the players come from if we can compete but it's obvious the Texas, Florida, international strategy is failing. I'm not saying to completely stop going after a kid from those areas. I'm just saying we should at least be focused on getting a few kids from the state. This is why I would love it if we brought in an NAIA coach (assuming Layer was let go). Most of those NAIA coaches or D2/D3 coaches are forced to recruit local talent, develop it and then have a good game plan.

How does a kid from Virginia not see the same thing?

Maybe they do see the same thing. Still no reason to not go after kids from VA. Sly said we were in a unique position because of our national profile and student body, I'm just proving that doesn't matter much to a good HS senior from Texas or Florida, especially when you add those other things. If we're going to avoid VA kids, then fine but give me a good reason to do so. Show me how we'll be better than local schools by doing so. Radford and VMI are better than we are, it shouldn't be that way.

Are they actually avoiding recruiting kids from Virginia or are the kids from Virginia choosing better programs within the state? There are 2 ACC schools to go along with VCU, George Mason, Richmond and a few other legitimate programs in the state that have proven that they can win. This doesn't even mention the kids who are going north to Maryland or south to the various basketball schools in North Carolina.

I don't think we're avoiding VA. We just go where the talent is. You're listing all of the in-state teams and how many VA kids they have as if they're something to strive towards when maybe 1 or 2 of them are. Radford and VMI are not better than us. They may be or may not be this season. Guess we'll see at the end. If anything I'd say we're all wallowing in the same pit of shame.

I'm not against recruiting in state, but VA is not exactly known as being a hot bed of college basketball talent. We're going to where the talent is and apparently not bringing it back. I don't see why it would be any better here. The only thing we can offer VA kids that we can't to out of staters is their family can come watch in a relatively short drive. And really if we're talking about Hampton Rds, which we're all thinking about, moms and dads probably arent going to be making that drive regularly.
