ESPN.com's Reggie Rankin wrote:• Another Liberty commit was very impressive was Class of 2010 power forward Steven Baird (San Antonio/H.C.Y.A.) displayed excellent skill at 6-foot-8 and about 200 pounds. Baird hit jumpers to the arc, attacked the baseline and gathered defensive rebounds and started the break with a bust-out dribble. Baird has a quick trigger as he spaces on the side of dribble penetration or runs pick and pop action with current and future teammate John Caleb-Sanders.

We have a commitment from 6'6" VA PF Toles Hartman.

We will probably pick up another big man in the early signing period and then call it a wrap for 2010.
I love it! A UNCA fan posts a link about their "BIG" signing in which you have to scroll past the LU football recruit Sigmon! LOL! Congratulations guys! I can't believe you beat out Gardening School for this guy!

Where did I say it was a "BIG" signing? And he hasn't even signed yet. You can't do that until November. And it's looking now like he might not even be coming to Asheville. I really have no idea what is going on with this kid.

And it would make sense that a Virginia football recruit deciding to go to a Virginia university during football season would take priority in a Virginia newspaper over a basketball player deciding to go to an out of state school.

Let me cut to the chase. This thread is about Stephen Baird, not an almost-signed UNCA player. No one here cares who you guys have almost signed. Go post on someone else's thread that cares.

Take yourself a little less seriously there big guy.

And you obviously cared enough to respond not once, but twice to the original comment that I made. So I think your "No one here cares...." statement is demonstrably false.

Everyone has to go through their "FlameFans 101" phase. 3 years ago I would have practically cussed you out. Now I actually look at what the opponent's fans post, you can learn something from it in most cases. (Except Presby, nothing they do is worth the paper it's printed on or the bandwidth it wastes...)

Just to be clear, I was talking to Keenan and not you.

Why would you have cussed me out three years ago?

Edit: No point in getting this thread off topic. Sorry for including a link to a guy that we have a commitment from. I'm interested in who other schools recruit (obviously) and figured some of you guys would want to know who we have coming in, especially since it's a guy from VA. And I didn't see the need to start a new thread for it.

Baird will provide a lot of matchup problems with other power forwards. Will be interested to see how he guards the John Williams / Joseph Harris types that always seem to be playing in our league.

Oh I knew who you were talking to. And I am sure it doesn't bother you as much as it bothers him.

And I say that because I was Keenan 3 years ago. I thought anything other than Liberty news was a joke and a waste of my time, and I would have been a feminine hygiene product disposal vessel to you.

And I agree with your "Edit"... it's good to learn about the opponents, not just yourself. No team plays in a vacuum. And getting a guy from VA is odd for the boys in the mountains, especially when RU, LU, and VMI are all up here scouting them.

Well you guys certainly didn't need to recruit him with Baird already in the fold for the Class of 2010. I think Hartman is going to be a good player for us, but Baird is not your typical Big South recruit. Will be hard for yall to recruit other power forwards and you really don't need to.

Coach Biedenbach specializes in recruiting the following:

- Guys over 7'1"
- The 6'5" - 6'7" Caucasian

I like our chances whenever we are recruiting somebody that fits the above mold, even if it means going outside our geographical area.

(Just to be clear since some people are apparently on a thin string, I was being facetious with the last half of my post. )

If all pans out we could go with a HUGE front line with Baird, McMasters, and JVP.

We'd have those 3 guys all together for 3 years.

Then throw in the 2 Sanders' in the backcourt

Alrighty. Well, here's the deal. This kid signs with ANY mid major and I'll eat crow. He signs with the big boys...well, then my point has been made, again.
So.....do we have to deliver? Or do you want to come up to the Burg?

From May to Nov this kid went from at 93 on ESPN to an 87. Did his skills diminish that much or is it just because he signed with us instead of Utah or A&M...lol. What a joke.

Welcome SB! Looking forward to you proving you deserved the 93!

I think the latter is more true than the former.

They probably have also seen the kid play more now and have been able to evaluate him better. Plus it's ESPN, their rankings are a joke anyways. They had John Wall ranked 4th, he is considered the top pick in the 2010 NBA Draft by virtually everyone, yet he was only the 4th ranked freshman

Does anyone (paging BJ) know who the all time highest ranked player was to sign at LU and what his ranking was?

The ratings systems have changed so much over the years that it's really hard to say, but I know there were some evaluators who had Marcus White in or near the top 100 nationally. I think we got him primarily because we were willing to overlook/work with his academic problems and let him sit out a year as a non-qualifier.

93 would have been our highest ESPN rating for sure, and I think 87 still may be. If I recall, Carter and Seth were 83.
