I'm not on a high horse. The only way for an extra scholarship to come open is if one of our current players decides to leave.

That's not 100% accurate. It is not always the player who makes that decision.

But when did I single out one kid on here? Its a fact that with a recruiting class this big we are probably going to have a kid or two transfer out. I didn't single anyone out. I didn't drop any names on here. All I was saying is that we will probably have three schollys open next year so that Ovie can come here if he wants to.

It can't be a fact if its only probable.

You're a funny one.

What I was saying, and you know what I meant, was that with this big of a recruiting class it is likely that one of these kids either transfer or be asked to leave. Its very likely.

whats the deal with the "former commit"? Im way confused because everything I can find says he is still verbally committed to LU. Someone please explain?

This is the article.

http://weblogs.dailypress.com/sports/hi ... bound.html

It really sounds like when Soko decided he wanted to come to LU we had a choice to make and chose Ovie, which is perfectly legit, as neither offers or verbal commits are binding in any way. Could be a bit of a stressful situation for 2 teamates/friends. Based on those numbers Tre had a disappointing Senior year.

It could also be that we originally were going with Ovie, had some things go wrong paperwork wise, didn't know if it would work out, and so we went with Tre instead. Then, once things got worked out with Ovie, we went with who we wanted from the get go.

So, if I have this right, we surmise that we offered the young man a scholarship, he accepted, and then we took it away.

No. That is not something you can just assume from the details we are given.

“The details, I’m not at liberty to discuss,” Brehon said. “But it was nothing bad that Liberty did. He had given a verbal commitment, which is not legally binding, and now he’s shopping around and trying to find some interest.”
Straight from the Article.

That's a dirty assumption to just throw out there given the details we have. You don't know if we pulled it, if the player and staff both had a change of heart, if the player had a change of heart, if there's a grades issue, or any number of other scenarios.

I don't see anything dirty about it, even if we pulled our offer unilaterally, and even if it was soley to offer it to another recruit we preferred. Kids commit and change their minds all the time. We had a basketball recruit from Texas who did it to us last year because he had an offer to play BCS football.

When you make an offer it is clear in the NCAA rules that before the LOI is signed either party can change their mind. I don't see any reason why we should be held to a higher standard on this unless we made a seperate promise to the young man that we would hold that scholarship for him til signing day. If that were the case do you think his coach would have said "it was nothing wrong that Liberty did"? Not likely.

The reason I said it was dirty was due to his background and bias. He has done a great job lately of giving credit where credit is due but we all know where his allegiances lie and sometimes those allegiances come to the forefront and slip through.

In my post, I was just asking if this was what you were saying, SJ. I didn't say it was against the NCAA rules, or that it wasn't done by other programs or even all programs. I know a bit about basketball, I guess, but I'm not an expert on the rules & regs of recruiting, or what is considered ethical or not. I don't know anything much about tre, and if his senior season wasn't what we thought it would be, perhaps it wouldn't have been a good fit. I do think we need a big man.

I also realize that it may be a distraction for me to participate in most discussions, whereas everybody knows my personal relationship with others unnamed. Ritchie has done a good job. Ritchie knows 1,000 times more about recruiting than I do.
As you know, I never called what anybody did "dirty" - all I asked was "is this what was done?"

Thank you - & God bless

It's the way you said it. You made it into a victim/aggressor relationship. "This young man had his scholarship taken from him" sounds like the beginning of some sob story about how a school did you wrong. "Tre Lee is now pursuing other options, and Liberty did nothing wrong" means that the decision suited both parties interest. You phrased it as if our staff killed the kid's puppy.

Ding ding ding. That's exactly why I said it was dirty coming from you. You've done good about being unbiased and supporting the current staff but the way you worded that made it sound like we shot his dog when in reality, this could be the best thing to happen to the kid and the entire circumstances around it haven't been revealed.

if i have the choice I take Soko, hands down, he will be a project but he has way more upside. The 7..1 ppg is kind of misleading because this team is very, very talented

similar to regular college acceptance letters......continued acceptance is based on performance.....if your performance slips, they can take back their acceptance. i think that might be the case here.....someone in this thread mentioned his stats and playing time declining.......if hes not living up to his scholarship offer, then its the kids own fault.

I don't know if this has been posted or not but Tre Lee signed with Coastal this morning.

http://thesunnews.typepad.com/coastal_c ... guard.html
He committed to Liberty in January, but he said the Flames rescinded their scholarship offer after he was ejected from a game this past season. He had committed to St. Louis as a junior but later decommitted after he felt uncomfortable with changes on the coaching staff.

"Once I got down there and visited, I loved the place, the players and the coaches," Lee said of Coastal. "Everything was just a good fit for me."

Lee said he has been committed to the Chanticleers for several weeks, but he kept the news quiet because his recruitment had become a political mess.
I don't know exactly what "political mess" means but, this being the basketball forum, I'm sure that someone on here will ge glad to argue about it for five hours.
