No argument here on that. Wojo obviously has his own ideas of what he wants in a guard, and apparently Dawson wasn´t it. Same can be said for McKay, who showed the door to the 2 guys who would have been our point guards if he had been happy with the status quo.

Some did well here; others did not live up to the hype, but we wish the very best for Dawson. Play Basketball
USC, the kid was left handed and was pretty good on both offense and defense. I believe he played on the same team as Sorenson. Could drive to the hoop pretty well. Hope Dawson turns out to be a good one.
USC player was Cordell Robinson. He was a righty.

Michigan State player was Parrish Hickman. He was a lefty.

Sum, Parrish Hickman was definitely a transfer from Michigan State, but with all due respect to him and you, I don't think he ever played the position of point guard or shooting guard or even the 3-guard for LU. Wasn't he a power forward?

No Penalty for violation of The Rule since there was legitimate context

The WVU kid I think was Carl Williams. What I DO know is that he was the most athletic guard we have had on the Mountain with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions (SCAR NOT being one of them)

As I told CIDER, we don't take Marshall transfers because the step up in competition for them is too much!

Carl Williams only played one year at Liberty. He actually transferred to LU after already redshirting at WVU and thus sacrificed a year of eligibility to do so. He played mostly at the small forward in a 3 guard offense, and holds the distinction of being the only LU MBB player to ever lead the nation in any statistical category, averaging just under 4 steals per game. He was IMHO the most athletic player ever to don an LU uniform, and while he didn´t have the skill level to draw the attention of the NBA, I was quite surprised actually that some NFL team didn´t take a look at him as a DB. I believe he could have made it.

Bingo. The one year he played for us, the PG position was in Hildo´s capable hands. Hickman was 6´8¨ and about 240 and really talented. He and Nwosu were arguably the best pair at the 4/5 we ever put on the floor.

A scouting report from Dawson back in '13...
Strengths:
John's a combination gaurd who is more a point gaurd given his ability to run a team. Great with the ball, can handle it and he's good on both the break and in the halfcourt. Makes plays for his team. He can shoot it when open with range to the 3-point line. Has good size for the point. He can slide over and play off the ball as well. Good athlete.

Weaknesses:
Needs to get stronger for the next level. Playing in New Mexico he's not competing against the high level talent he'll face in college so developing a consistent competition level is necessary. Need to raise his game for the Big East.

Bottom Line:
Versatile guard prospect who can play on and off the ball. He can set up teammates and score on his own. Good, solid program player.

I mentioned it in the thread about Andrew Rowsey transferring, but since it involves Dawson, I thought I would bring it up here. For whatever reason, Wojo didn´t have much use for Dawson as a player and basically put him in a position where he was forced to transfer if he wanted to play. With the schollie vacated when John left, Marquette went after Rowsey hard and ended up signing him. I think it will be fascinating to see how their respective careers play out.

The only name I've been hearing about is Dawson from this 15-16 team, cant wait to see him play... I never really liked the fit of Wojo at Marquette but after Shaka Smart turned the job down it fell in his lap. A coup

I'm admittedly a Wojo fan but he's done fairly well for himself there in such a short time. His recruiting class this year is probably 8-10 in the country - including a potential top-10 pick in Ellerson.

IMO, Dawson didn't (and still doesn't) have a defined position. He's passable at PG but probably a little on the small side to play the two. That won't be an issue at the Big South level.

i beg to differ anyone who knows the true recruitment of dawson knows hes a true point guard who can play other positions. good things happen when this kid touches the ball. evident all thru high school and in one of the biggest games his fresh year at marquette vs georgetown (big east) when he was given the opportuinity. wojo def had his own agenda which was no fault of dawson.

I Agree. Dawson will bring good things to the Flames. If the coach didn't think he was good he could have dumped him with Retic and company.
