Nick catches up with LU´s all-time assist leader, who will be leaving with his wife and new baby girl for his next pro gig in Germany in a few days.

2 things he said that stood out to me. He made a point of talking about how open and welcoming Ritchie was to him as a former player. This appears to be a change from the way DL handled things, and IMHO for the better. I´m sure it makes SCAR happy. The other was the glowing praise he had for our new Strength and Conditioning coach Henry Barrera. Sounds even more like that was a great hire. He said there were some players on the current team that impress him. The only name he mentioned was John Dawson. I guess they have worked out together, which is probably a pretty good matchup.

At the risk of drawing BJ comparisons, I have to say that every time I hear Jesse talk I am happy that we have him out there representing our school. There are other x-players doing a great job as well (and some not so great) but he´s pretty special.

Keep in mind that it was Ritchie with the assistance of Jason Eaker who brought Jesse to the mountain. So I am not surprised that they still have a great relationship.

The players on the team have been buzzing about Dawson on social media the past few weeks. Hopefully where there is smoke, there is fire.

Yes does make me happy to see former players welcomed back into the program. It is easy to welcome guys like Jesse and Hildo and me who are proactive in getting involved in the program and staying connected. The challenge is to get guys like Erik Sorensen, Greg MacCauley, Adam Hopkins, Kenneth Annabonam and so many others that LIVE IN LYNCHBURG to feel connected to the program. Being around Shaka Smart's program up close the past 5 years I got to see how well they treat their former players at VCU. Always have a seat in the building, gear to wear, access to the locker room and media room, time to interact with current players, fans etc. They do it right. I think Ritchie can have the same impact if they make it a priority. Coach Olinger is already doing some things behind the scenes to reconnect some guys and has asked me for help. Once I am on the other side of my move, I plan on getting involved.

As for Jesse, he is and always has been a class act and I feel honored to call him a friend and a brother and fellow Liberty Guard. His whole family is top notch! Sugarland Texas (I miss saying that!)
