Liberty University men's basketball coach Randy Dunton calls it the Syracuse approach. Load up on easy home wins to build confidence for a team.
For Orange coach Jim Boeheim, that means bringing in a steady diet of low- and mid-majors. Seeing that Liberty already falls in that category, for the Flames, the Syracuse approach involves bringing three non-NCAA teams in a row to Vines Center.

The Flames overcame a shaky start to get the first of those three wins Tuesday, whipping Cincinnati Christian 101-65. Next are games against NAIA schools Houghton College (Saturday) and Southern Virginia (Monday).

"We've gone the other way before," Dunton said. "We've scheduled up, and sometimes we've lost confidence over it."

Liberty (1-1) underwent a massive roster overhaul this summer, and seven new players are trying to find their footing in the Flames' offense. The non-NCAA schools aren't going to pull in a lot of fans. With school on Thanksgiving break, only 536 attended the home opener Tuesday. But they will serve a purpose down the road.

"It helps us work on team chemistry, and it's a confidence booster," said Liberty wing Anthony Smith, who scored 23 points on 9 of 13 shooting. "It lets us know that no matter who we play, if we play our game, we're play well."

Cincinnati Christian, which competes in the National Christian Colleges Athletics Association, made a game of it in the first half. Forward Joe Mendenhall hit all five of his 3-pointers before the break, and CCU led 34-33 with 4:44 left in the first half.

Liberty led 44-38 at halftime and got a jumpstart in the second half when Larry Blair (27 points, eight assists) fed Smith for an emphatic alley-oop dunk. Liberty outscored the Golden Eagles 31-6 to open the second half and led 75-44 with 7:37 left.

"That was a real big momentum booster," Smith said of the dunk.

"Hopefully we'll have a lot of those this year. We're going to try to keep it alive in the Vines."

Smith, a sophomore, showed flashes of being a force in the lane. When he first arrived, he wanted to be a pure perimeter player. His coaches pleaded for him to use his body more to create space in the lane. He seems to have received the message.

"The more he accepts the identity of who he really is as a player, then some of the other stuff will come easy," Dunton said. "In his mind, he'd probably like to be somebody who can just float around the perimeter and knock down threes, when his game is really about getting penetration."

Alex McLean added 15 points and 15 rebounds for Liberty. Mendenhall and Justin Bilyeu led CCU with 15 points each.

Couldn't agree more with post who said he wouldn't play Armon Jones. Jones looked totally disinterested about being there, he showed no enthusiasm, he looked lazy, he didn't box out, he made foolish lackadasical passes and I may be getting redundant, but he didn't hustle. If this is how he is going to play, give his scholarship to someone else.

hey kel, I was actually being serious...look at bigger schools, they have players that do that. By the way, how did Holland play????

Dickens is right about schools keeping players on the bench because of their GPA. However rest assured that Liberty does not have that luxury when dealing with a 6-8 player. He was brought in to play and contribute. He has some attitude issues and I really hope coach Jones, and coach Dunton help him deal with it. As far as Mo Barry, he was not in uniform. They dressed 12. As far as Justin Holland, he had his best game in a Liberty Uniform and I was really proud of him as I have been a J Holland supporter from the day they recruited him. I think he has some skills that will help this team win. At times he is down right disruptive of the other team's offense with his ball hawking skills. Something that Marcus White used to do for us back in the 90's. He also hit a pull up jumper and a spot up 3 and created tons of turnovers even though he was only credited for 2 steals.

It's about time. I am a Holland fan, and i saw him play AAU ball and knew when we signed him he was going to be a big player. I hope now he gets more playing time...Hopefully Jones will get his act together; however, I hope he continues to put school first....

Holland was good, hopefully he'll get more minutes with him being healthy (and him not trying to start something with other players). I can't wait to check out the game Saturday night to see what he and Smith does and keep up this trend of good playing.
