That was a solid showing for Sommy last night, not just because of the defensive performance. If you watched closely in December when he played, he looked completely lost on what to do away from the ball in terms of running sets. The offense as a whole kind of grinded to a halt when he was out there. Last night, he moved with a purpose, set strong screens and did not look lost at all. That's the key to him getting more minutes. He was there defensively, but he was a total liability on offense so it was tough to get him important minutes. That's not the case any more.

the refs call fouls when they have to at the end. There was contact but proabably not enough to call the foul in that situation. I thought he had a much better look by taking a little deeper shot than that tough shot he ended up with. I thought one move that really hurt us was taking Sanders out at the 5 or 6 minute mark and going with Chene. I realize this a O for D switch but as soon as we take JC out they went up 8 with about 3 45 to go. Had several chances to put him back in including during a TO then we finally put him back in with about 1 45 to go. Really impressed with the play of Antwan, JB, Sommy and JVP on the defensive end.

just some thoughts from last night. first, if coastal is the best team in the league, then LU is right there. we are easily in the top three of the league. if a few breaks had gone our way we could have won the game, like the full court drive by the coastal player at the end of the first half, or the few bonehead plays we make every game, and that one spurt very game where we cannot seem to make a jumper. its just a matter of consistentcy. this is a young team obviously. we had no one who could really check coastal's guard play. Sommy played very well, and if he continues to improve that will bode well for us. we cut our turnovers down as well so im not too disappointed with the loss. we are in good shape so far and the big south as a whole is pretty average so i think we have a great chance to be there in the end. this team is capable of winning three or four in a row or losing three or four in a row. to get a sweep next week would be great. GO FLAMES!

OK gotcha, and I kindof see your point. Chene was in there to press and foul. You could argue JC could have done that because he only had 2 fouls. Chene is definately a better defender though, and especially in the press.

Smooth talking about some breaks that could have gone our way how many buckets when half way in and then found a way to rattle out....at least 15 points...no excuse or anything but that's one of those things where one night they find a way to not go in and one night they are going in...that alone would have changed the outcome....oh well.

There were also a lot of 50/50 balls under the boards that went out of bounds, and it seemed like CCU got the call every time. They ended up with 9 "team rebounds" which is an uncommonly high number.

Actually, if a shooter initiates contact with a defender, like say a last second 3 pt shot, it is NOT a foul. If a shooter jumps into a defender, that is not a foul. Doesn't matter if it is the first play or the last play of a game. A foul call on that last shot would have been what is commonly known as a "bail out"
Just my.02 but what do I know!!

Gray 12pts 5 boards
Holmes 11 pts 7 boards

As the season goes on we will continue to close that maturity gap. JVP got a little bit of an education tonight. Fortunately to this point he has been a quick study. Sommy gave us a few good minutes. No where to go but up for us.
Don't worry we are replacing our big guys next year with:

Great Game!! As I have stated before and I will say it again, these two teams are the best in the Big South as of right now and I can't wait for the rematch. We just need to match Coastal win for win till we meet up with them again. Go Flames!!!

Wow, I thought I knew a fair amount about JUCOs but I've never heard of either of those schools. And my high school was briefly in the same conference as Belleville when I was in high school.

A factor that hasn't been mentioned in the crowd size is the fact that the NFL playoffs were on TV. That pretty much wiped out the nominal local fans who might have come otherwise just for something to do. I brought a group of 13 from where I work, but 3 or 4 others backed out when they realized they would be missing most of one playoff game and part of another.
