Because we lived in upstate NY for five years, several of our friends attended Houghton. I even went there with several from our youth group to attend a Twila Paris concert. Anyway, they pronounced it this way: Stressed HOAT (rhymes with boat) with unreleased t, followed by unstressed N (syllabic N). (AmE)

Haha. I honestly don't know if I would've been able to get there. I'm pretty sure Campbell Ave and 460 are cleared, but my road is completely covered. I'm not sure if I would've been able to get to Campbell.

Most of our basketball players drive little cars. None of them would've been able to get there either.

So, does anyone know if the Houghton team is in town? Seems silly to me to cancel if they are. Maybe postpone til later in the day to give the road crews more time. It seems like we could come up with enough volunteers with serious off road type 4wd vehicles to get everyone who needs to be there to the Vines safely.

It is definitely cancelled per the SIDs. Perhaps it was more or less called off yesterday to keep them from having to travel in the mess.

Last I saw, the VT game was still on, and they were advertising free admission.

And Houghton was already here....they drove from upstate NY to see something they see 4 months out of the year, only to turn around and go home....

Seriously, there is no way that enough people could safely get to the Vines to work the game, let alone the players and officials.

No, they were here. Even if it would have still gone on, I wouldn't have been able to go. My car is buried and there's a foot of snow on my street. I would have never made it to Rivermont...

The DIII football championship game in Salem is still on too. Moved back from 11:00 to 4:30.

I'm not saying the game shouldn't have been called, just that it didn't have to be. It's a matter of priorities. They wouldn't have needed a guy with a red blazer standing at each corner of the court pretending they had a reason for being there, or a fraction of the staff they normally have. You're probably looking at a couple of hundred fans at most, and most of them students stuck on campus. Players and coaches, refs (could be the deal breaker) and I would say about a dozen support staff would be all you need. I hope the Houghton players and coaches enjoy their snowball fights in the hotel parking lot.

The game was already going to be essential personnel only. It was going to be free admission with no ticket people or ushers, etc. It was decided that it wasn't even safe enough for essential personnel to drive in. It wasn't worth it to take the very big risk of someone getting in an accident coming in. There were almost 50 wrecks be 7:00 last night and the roads weren't nearly as bad as they are now. Not everything needs to be overanalyzed to see if the athletic department should've done something different.

This is Timberlake:

I'm one to think that southerners freak out over snow way too much, but right now, there's no reason to go out. Our roads and VDOT aren't ready to handle something like this. They'll get it cleared, but it's gonna take about a day or so.

For one thing, the players all have to get to the arena. Do you get someone in a 4WD to go pick each individual one up? I assume not all of them live on campus. As Jon said, the personnel list had already been cut in half yesterday. No video streaming, etc. And it's a logistical thing. Any side street right now is impassable. And the main roads are snow choked.

The athletic department made the right call on this. I'll say this. I would have been majorly ticked had I gotten in a wreck trying to get to this game. Glad I didn't have to make that choice.

And UVa just postponed its game too.
Tonight’s Virginia-UNC Wilmington men’s basketball game at John Paul Jones Arena has been postponed because of hazardous travel conditions caused by the heavy snowfall in the Charlottesville area. The schools will try to reschedule the game during the 2009-10 season.

“We are postponing the game in the interest of safety for the participants, staff and fans,” said Virginia Athletics Director Craig Littlepage. “With the hazardous travel conditions caused by the extremely heavy snowfall we are concerned about individuals getting to the arena for the game, including teams, game officials and the core staff we need to play a game.”

ACC protocol indicates games should be played if both teams and two of the three game officials have arrived at the site.

“We have been in touch with the Atlantic Coast Conference office and they understand the situation,” Littlepage said. “The UNC Wilmington team is in Charlottesville as are two game officials, but the conditions are such that we are concerned about people trying to travel to the arena.”

Travel has become a serious issue in the region as the snow continues to accumulate, temperatures drop and winds pick up. Local Charlottesville-Albemarle officials are advising people to stay off the roads. Emergency crews are working throughout the area to rescue stranded drivers and to move abandoned vehicles.

“The large number of drivers who have been stranded in their vehicles is a priority for emergency workers and the University does not want to hold an event that might draw people out on the road,” Littlepage added.

I'm talking side streets, Sly, not the main arteries. You can get around on Timberlake, Rivermont, etc. Getting there is the trick. I don't have a 4WD vehicle and there's no way I can get out of my neighborhood right now.

i find it hilarious that all of you people not located in lynchburg and some that are here are weather experts and top athletic dept staffers. VDOT is working on the main roads first and will get to the side streets later.heck, i cant get out of my neighborhood, and my HOA has a guy in a bobcat clearing snow....he will be here all day at the rate he is going. snows like this rarely happen, so yeah the roads are bad and they are behind. the athletic dept made the call out of safety. i do wonder if the game could be played tomm. though after church, but oh well it is what it is. my saturday afternoon of LU basketball is not happening so movies it is!

Smooth -- most of the players have flights scheduled for tomorrow to go home for Christmas break, so that's a big reason they didn't try to play tomorrow. And Houghton didn't want to stick around for another day, either.

It's a lot more difficult to have to reschedule a national championship game than some regular season D1 game that is, for all intents and purposes, relatively meaningless. Not really a valid comparison.

And it was actually rescheduled to 4
