WOW! What a great day to be a Flame! We, a couple of old-timer alumni, sat with the kids up above the VMI band. Had a great time yelling with the kids. Glad I don't have to teach on Monday, voice is mighty weak after all that! :) Reminiscent of old days in the early 80's in the multi-purpose building.

Jesse, Seth and the boys played their game. The defense rattled the Keydets so, they couldn't buy a shot there near the end. 35 points for Seth. . . just a lot of fun to watch!!!

Now, off to the hockey game. Go FLAMES (again)!!!

The atmosphere was unmatched. I feel like VMI is a rivalry for us bc I know they don't like us, but I mean that felt like a heated rivalry game it was fantastic. The Keydets were rowdy, our kids that made the trip were rowdy. It was just fantastic, felt like big time college basketball. I think our guys thrive in that environment I could tell in warm-ups our guys were eating it up. When the Keydets started their rally clap in the pregame with about 2 minutes to go I looked down at our guys and I see Brolin bobbin' his head and clapping with them and I thought oh man we are loving this. Then Seth is getting crap from some guys on the corner of the VMI bunch and he buries a 3 from down there and turns around and starts talking back, I mean i'm not pushing bad sportsmanship or anything, but you could just tell our guys were loving and thriving in the environment. Hopefully, this was the road win that gets us going, this team although young, still has a chance to be very, very good. We had the 2 best players on the floor. Ant was a POY again today, but so was Seth, he was in the freakin' zone from the get go, awesome to watch.

Amazing atmosphere. When we went last year it was a weeknight and the Cadets weren't out in full force. This year they were and man was it nuts.

Anyways, before the game I told sch14teen "Either we get blown out of the water or we stick it to them, because we're either gonna match up and keep them contained or they're gonna run thru us." I feel like we played good enough defense, did amazing on the boards, and did a good job of breaking the press AND chewing up clock. Stephene played a lot like TeeJay used to, and frankly, I liked it. He would drive to the basket and just run out to the other side and look to set things back up. Didn't force things, was conservative. Jesse is just a beast, and played a lights out game, but did it under the radar. Smitty and Seth, well.... you know. Stoked that we put together 30-35 minutes of our A game with some of our B game mixed in. Not the F game at the beginning that reminded me of the UNCA game. It's rare for us to have it going for a long stretch like we did today and for that, I am really excited.

Has to be considered huge, not because it saves the season or indicates we could have a season, but because it indicates we can win the BS. Congratulations on a road win that few believed the Flames would win.

huge win, I enjoyed listening to the vmi fans gripe and complain about the refs. I mean the refs were letting the players mix it up and I like it that way. Our guys got hammered there fair share of times as well with no calls. Duggar Baucom could have had atleast a T called on him 3 or 4 times. I was happy to see how composed Seth is, Gabriel (VMI's) frosh from Charlotte really lost his control twice and got T'd up. The maturity level Jesse, Seth and Anthony showed was just unbelievable today.
-Jesse handling the press and being aggressive at the right time (most of the time) was huuuuuge for us
-smitty was a monster on the glass and in the paint, he always looked like he was in control of what was going on
-seth, well he lived up to his hype and then some

I always love it when you beat those guys in their own building, that was a good atmosphere, but man do is that satisfying beating them their again....

Hearing about the continuous whining by Dugger and the VMI players about the officiating, I'm wondering what happened to military discipline. Sounds a bit like "conduct unbecoming" to me. Hopefully they are trained well enough that they will have a different response if things aren't going their way on the battlefield.

Hey SJ, as I was leaving, there were a couple of older guys talking to you. Were they giving you crap?
They were asking if Seth was related to that other Curry boy and when I said yes they were asking how he didn't end up at a bigger school.

I told them no one wanted him and we definitely weren't complaining.

I heard all that too. I'll admit, there were some weak calls, but it went both ways, especially late. Do they want to talk about the various travels and offensive fouls they got away with? The officiating was inconsistent, for both teams. The box score proved it. 18 fouls for Liberty, 18 for VMI. Only difference is when we got bad calls, we didn't jump up in the air like spoiled 3 year olds and pick up a technical.

I didn't know refs were responsible for VMI only shooting 40% and not rebounding. Just an idea.

Curry, Flames douse Keydets’ win streak
By Chris Lang
Sports writer
Published: January 17, 2009

LEXINGTON — As the shot clock ticked down, Johnny Stephene dribbled along the baseline, looking for Seth Curry. Five seconds left. Stephene brought the ball halfway back out. Four seconds. In a split second, he spotted Curry covered on the left wing. No matter. Stephene fired the pass anyway, and with one second left, Curry drilled a 3-pointer with a hand in his face from 26 feet away.
The shot stunned a hostile Cameron Hall crowd Saturday afternoon and gave Liberty the lead for good in its Big South showdown with VMI. On a larger scale, the shot was part of an 11-point outburst over a five-minute span in which Curry simply took over, as he is wont to do on occasion.
The Flames freshman finished with a career-high 35 points.

Maybe the stat of the game: according to Lang, on fast beak points, LU outscored VMI 16-2. If I'm reading that correctly, VMI had only ONE fast break bucket for the entire game? And this is just good coaching on the part of McKay: “Coach told us to get to the line, because that will stop their tempo, because it gets so fast,“ Curry said. “It helped us catch our breath. I thought that was key.”

"Go talk to Michael Jordan," said VMI coach Duggar Baucom cracked afterwards.

Well, for the packed house looking for another VMI victory, the kid might as well had been Jordan. The razor-thin 6-foot-3, 180-pound freshman was 10-for-15 from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, and 11-of-11 from the free-throw line in leading Liberty (13-6, 4-3) to its third straight victory in Lexington.

"I just had a lot of confidence," Curry said. "It was like the rim was huge. That was me having a blast."

... said Chavis Holmes, who had 17 points on 7-for-17 shooting. "We're not making any excuses ... they just punched us in the mouth today."

Fantastic win. It was nice to be able to hear some locals talking about Flames hoops (and Curry, specifically) around a friendly game of cards last night.

Also: This thread lacks a beginning. I'm not surprised, though.

It means that a certain poster hasn't shown up here after a solid win, as we all probably could have predicted. When we lose he's here faster than JDUB on a new Bojangles. When we get a solid win, nothin.

Now that I've spelled it out he'll probable show up here just to spite me, but it doesn't change anything.

I've been waiting for him and his friends to join us since the winning has begun again too scorcho...and he wonders why we all attack him when he comes on after a loss...if he just stuck around during the wins and the losses then maybe we wouldn't be so hard on him
