Carter Update:
Grace tops East Ridge
Saturday, December 15, 2007

By Jaime Lackey
Staff Writer

For the past two years, every high school basketball matchup between Grace Academy and East Ridge has been a must-see for college coaches.

Now that the schools' 6-foot-10 seniors have signed their scholarship papers -- East Ridge's Philip Jurick with the University of Tennessee and Grace's Carter McMasters with Liberty University -- Friday night's game wasn't the standing-room-only event it had once been.

23 point 21 rebounds vs. 15 and 9. The stats show the difference between a high major recruit and ours. Here's hoping Coach Layer can work his magic with another big man.

For the record both were recruited by the Vols and last year Carter had the better numbers in their matchup from what I've been told.

Lies, d**n lies and statistics.

One tiny little detail............................... Carter's team won by 11 and his teamate scored 22 points. Star player stats tend to go up when noone else on the team can play. Especially true with rebounding.

It would be interesting to see how many shots they each took.

Yeah, actually, The DIFFERENCE is that Carter is on a winning team and contributed in a win. The other kid got over 50% of his teams points and couldn't carry them to a win. I would rather have the winner.

Hey flamesbball84, what kind of OS/browser are you using? I noticed that there's an escape character before every apostrophe and quotation mark you type.

Take it from someone who has seen Carter play. Liberty could have a real steal!! You cannot go by his numbers in determining if he is a great "big man". Go back to Coach RM's diary. Carter stretches defenses. Watching him in high school has been discouraging. Great kid, great family. You'd think at 6'10", 6'11" (whichever), he'd touch the ball every time down the floor. That just doesn't happen. In a game against Temple (the high school associated with TN Temple University - yes the same one Carter's dad played for back in the day when TTU would beat LU), Carter had 16 points. Eight of those from the line (where he went 8-9). I'm guessing he took 9 shots from the floor - max.

Grace has another big man ( - a 6'8" kid who is a banger). Gives them freedom to move Carter around. They also have a guard who will play d-1 (Herman whose dad went to Austin P) but is just a Sophomore. The guard is NOT afraid to shoot and isn't concerned if anyone else does. Carter is extremely unselfish and a tremendous passer. In the same Temple game he had a minimum 4 assists just to the other big man. It has been very discouraging to see how Grace has handled Carter's talent.

I sat behind Coach Pearl's (TN) assistant at another Temple game 2 years ago. They did recruit him hard. Said the things he was doing other than scoring was what peaked their interest. Unbelievable vision. Shoots the 3 like Dirk.

Oh, by the way, Carter has a younger brother. 6'4" Freshman... left handed. And whoever said the dad was as tenacious as anyone was making an understatement. While not D-1, he was the MVP of the nation his Senior year at TTU. [/i]

I have no doubt that McMasters could be one of LU's biggest pickups ever. But it sounds like based on what could be a disfunctional situation in High School, he may take a little bit of time to develop. I sure hope the fact that he's going to get thrown straight into the fire, based on our post needs for next year, doesn't hamper him.

Carter has played plenty of summer ball as well. The more I hear about Carter the more excited I am for him to get on campus.

BTW MocGrad, there are more than a few of us around here with TTU & Chatty ties.

I had mentioned to Rocketfan, this statement it somewhat telling. We think of him as an outside shooter, (probably just because scout said so), but you don't get fouled very much just shooting 3s. He's either driving or posting up effectively.

To add just a bit to that....a game just a few nights ago, he had 16 points and 16 boards....

Would that be Tommy McMasters who played back in the early 80's for TTU?

Yes, Steve, Carter is the son of Tommy McMasters from 1980s Tenn. Temple fame. As good as Tommy was in those days, I'm trying to picture him playing with those skills at about 7 inches taller, because that's what his son is at around 6'11".

Does anyone know if Tommy's TTU teammate Paul Pridemore has a son around Carter's age who also plays basketball???

Paul is an assistant coach at Grace up in Knoxville and his son Cameron is junior guard this season. And it look like he is a chip off the old block:

Paul was sighted at Homecoming when Carter was amazing us with his 3-point abilities before the Alumni game.

Thanks, Sly. I saw Paul and Tommy sitting together at LU's basketball scrimmage, so I was wondering if Paul was checking LU out, too, for his kids.

Not saying Carter isn't skinny or that he doesn't need to work on his post moves, but he is also injured, and this is a medical redshirt.
